"GreenCapitalism!" How it can save our planet. by Keith Mcilroy July 19, 2011 10191 words Read a sample
Author bio:
My journey to Green-Capitalism "there is no need for there to be a 'loser' between economic growth and environmental protection" I have spent most of my professional life identifying the need for change in organisations then helping those organisations to make those changes. From turning around insolvent companies and integrating corporate acquisitions through to culture change programs on factory floors and in sales teams. Like most people deeply involved in business, my focus was on this quarter's profit, this month's sales, this week's cash flow. I paid scant regard to what was happening in the rest of the world, especially anything vaguely environmental. This started to change when my family flew into Manchester airport in 2000 to join me in the UK. It was raining. Hardly surprising for Manchester. Over the next few months it continued to rain and there was more and more discussion on climate change. At the time I dismissed this, along with 'peak oil' and 'global warming', as fear mongering from people who should get a 'proper job'. Then in April 2001, it was announced that the previous 12 months had been the wettest in the UK since records began. And records began in the 17th Century. That caused me to wonder a wee bit. But only for a bit as I soon went back to my insular business world and stayed there, even when we returned to Australia to find ourselves in the middle of the 'hundred year drought'. Then, in 2003 The Business Council of Australia invited me to join their working group that was preparing a range of scenarios for Australia in 20 years time. 'Aspire Australia 2025' was put together over 12 months by running workshops with seventy of the leading thinkers in Australia. We looked at every aspect of life in Australia. Our competitiveness, strategic defence, values and norms, our governance and our sustainability. That experience triggered the start of my journey. A journey that was initially focussed on climate change for the more that I researched the arguments for and against, the more I came to the conclusion that this was a 'clear and present threat' to our quality of life. It also quickly became clear that, until the business community took the risk seriously, then we would always struggle to make the changes needed to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. And here was where the nub of the problem was. Business had great difficulty seeing how we could both, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and also maintain the economic growth that is so fundamental to their business success. In the same way that business saw the 20th Century as a battle between labour and capital, many now saw the 21st Century as being a battle between economic growth and environmental protection. Yet, there was no real 'loser' in the battle between labour and capital, so there is no need for there to be a 'loser' between economic growth and environmental protection. Hence my promotion of Green-Capitalism. I write, I speak and I present on how we can have our cake and eat it too. For those promoters of environmental protection who are cynical of capitalism, I would ask you to remember that capitalism has dragged millions of people around the world out of the miserable existence so well documented by Charles Dickens and that capitalism, properly motivated, can achieve rapid change in society. For the promoters of economic growth who see environmentalists as a threat to our prosperity, I would ask you recognise we live on a planet of finite resources with a delicate ecosystem. The sooner we modify our business practices to use renewable resources without unnecessarily damaging our ecosystem, the more confident we can be that our prosperity can continue for our kids and grandkids.
"It Is What It Is...But It Doesn't Have To Be That Way." by Janyata Frazier March 31, 2012 51643 words Read a sample
Author bio:
“It is what it is, but it doesn’t have to be that way.” That’s her motto, and it’s also the title of her book. Janyata Frazier has authored a book that couples her charm and wit while presenting motivationally inspired principles for shaping and developing one’s character. Growing up the daughter of entrepreneur parents, while other kids were reading Nancy Drew novels, James and Jeanette had their daughter reading motivational speakers such as Napoleon Hill, Zig Ziggler, and Earl Nightingale. Jan was enamored with the stories that these speakers would tell, but the bottom line would always be the same: “You are in control of you;” “What you think you are, you are;” and “Dream plus action equals success.” Being a product of that entrepreneurial home, it wasn’t a question of if Jan would create her own business; the real question was what will her business be? To the surprise of her parents, although she did get her real estate license, Jan didn’t stick with the family business of real estate; rather, she became one of the first certified teachers in her family. Teaching led her to Kobe, Japan where she taught English for two years at a Japanese high school, but along with it she brought her entrepreneurial spirit. Recognizing the absence of quality black hair care professionals in her area, Jan, along with her friend opened up a hair salon in her apartment. The small business simply called “My Girl’s Place,” offered hair services, dinner, and a movie for $75! Not knowing how to say no to a challenge, Jan once accepted the task of giving a client layers although she’d never even cut bangs before. While in Japan, Jan captivated the attention and amusement of friends stateside by sending write ups of her experiences in Japan in a series entitled “There’s a Chocolate Chip in the Noodles.” Although the speed of life prevented Jan from completing the book, she didn’t abandon her desire to create a book based upon her personal experiences. When necessity created a need, Jan put her vision on paper and penned her first book “It Is What It Is, But It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way.” Not willing to let another summer pass without her reaching her goal of completing her book, Jan went to Raleigh, North Carolina and spent her days writing and watching TV while staying with her eldest brother, Tony. In late 2009, Jan opened her first corporation by launching Top Shelf Books Publishing House, LLC. Jan’s book will be self published and released in 2010. She’s currently in the planning stages of creating a second book; this one is targeted at teens. “There’s a real need for it, I talk to my students every day, I’m sure they can benefit from a book written directly to and for them.” Jan, like many of her students, could have benefited from more interesting, yet, instructional reading selections that were targeted to teens. A native of Decatur, Georgia , Jan attended Southwest DeKalb High School before she became a Literature major at Agnes Scott College also in Decatur . While at Agnes Scott, Frazier received training as a prejudice reduction workshop leader. Along with her peers, Jan led workshops to help train students, faculty and staff members along with the school’s administration. Frazier currently teaches Creative Writing and various English courses at Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Georgia.

Mostly I write about travel. Sometimes I write about stuff that isn't travel, like clutter, or identity, or being childfree. But mostly it's travel stuff. By day, I'm an academic. This means I spend time thinking, writing, and talking about language learning, transnationalism, critical theory, ethnography, positionality, grounded theory, teacher education, and a few other bits and bobs. But then when I come home I write fun stuff - like the stuff that's on here - and it's not academic, not at all. Instead, it's mostly about travel (did I mention that?) But I do use a few big words every now and again, just to keep you on your tippy toes. You can thank me later.

Author bio:
As a Motivational Coach and Speaker, my goal is “to empower people move to the next level of success in their lives.” Many people have asked for more information about me and why I am qualified to motivate others. So here’s a little bit about me and how I got here. It all started back in Fresno, CA where I was born and raised. As a child I knew I had a calling to help people be happier and live better lives. I knew this because I was keenly observant of people. I observed people and how they lived their lives. At age 10 a friend’s family invited me to a musical show called “Up With People!” This show had a major impact on me, and brought up my passion to help people be happier. Although my parents didn’t care about my grades, I received all A’s in school except I always failed Oral English. I couldn’t get up in front of the class and speak. What kept me going in school was my desire for a career in the helping/teaching profession, so I could help others become more successful. The females in my family were discouraged from going to college, so higher education became my way of rebelling. I earned my B.A. in Education from CSU Fresno. During college I had some wonderful professors who took me under their wing and encouraged me to speak in class. I learned that I enjoyed teaching and actually had a gift that had previously been repressed. I went on to get my teaching credential and taught Jr. and Sr. High School for 7 years. I went from a shy little girl who couldn’t speak in front of the class to a big girl who couldn’t STOP speaking in front of the class! Teaching adolescents was an amazing experience! I found that I wanted to work with them more one-on-one, so I went back to college to become a counselor. I received my M.S. in Counseling/Psychology from the University of Miami and became licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist. Initially I set out to get a wide range of experience. I worked in a children’s psych hospital in dual diagnosis, managed a residential treatment program for severely emotionally disturbed teenage girls, did biofeedback therapy for a pain management center, and worked in social services in the areas of foster care, child abuse and family reunification. Once I became licensed I worked in a private counseling practice for 7 years. I specialized in relationship counseling. During this time I realized that coaching, writing and teaching were what I really loved to do, so I started writing books for healthcare professionals and teaching continuing education courses. I became particularly interested in the field of motivation and coaching and worked on this as a specialty. I founded GROW Training Institute, Inc. which is a coach training organization, and became a Certified Professional Coach. I then coached myself through my Doctoral Program and earned my Ph.D. in Health Science through a correspondence program. I can now freely pursue my true passions of writing, speaking, coaching and consulting! I have published 26 books and am working on my next one now. Many people have asked me what has most motivated me during my life? I believe that we all have internal motivation when we find our gift. My strong desire to help people become higher functioning, happier and more successful must have initially come from my internal desire to grow, learn, and improve my life and the world around me. It also came from my deep appreciation for my mentors and teachers who helped me overcome my anxieties and fears about success. It came from reading books by great self help/spiritual authors such as Wayne Dyer, Gary Zukav, Louise Hay, Marianne Williamson, Barbara DeAngelis and Tony Robbins. I have learned that it is fear that stops us most. We sabotage our own success due to our own fear of our own light. I want to help others overcome their obstacles and shine their light brightly, just as my mentors did for me. I now do business, relationship and life coaching. As a Business Coach, I conduct trainings for businesses, entrepreneurs, corporations and organizations all over the world. I do practice building consulting for mental health and medical providers. As a relationship coach I help people stop sabotaging themselves and create their ideal relationships. I work by telephone, Internet and face-to-face. If you are interested in receiving coaching or need a motivational speaker, please contact me! I wish you much success.
