The Great Adventure | by Barry Allan April 01, 2012 | 69282 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Barry was born in Melbourne but grew up in Brisbane until joining the RAAF where he served for 20 years. After leaving the RAAF he lived in Darwin until retirement then moved back to Brisbane. His retirement hobby was tracing his family tree, and after finding several convict ancestors he started writing about their lives in 2005. The books were originally published in print and have sold out. New information still comes to hand, but rather than reprinting new editions he has released them as ebooks that can be easily updated. The print books sold at cost and the ebooks are free because much of the information was contributed by other family members over the years. If casual readers enjoy the stories, that is payment enough. |

The Great Song | by Rex Bromfield Oct. 22, 2011 | 5035 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I worked in the film business as a screen writer and director for many years. My first feature film, "Love At First Sight", Dan Aykroyd's first film, was invited to Filmex in Los Angeles by the American Film Institute. I directed other movies including "Melanie" starring Glynnis O'Connor, Don Johnson and Paul Sorvino and "Café Romeo" starring Jonathan Crombie and Catherine Mary Stewart. I also wrote and directed a dark comedy called "Home Is Where The Hart Is" starring Leslie Nielsen, Martin Mull and my sister, Valri Bromfield. In the 90s I ran a software company. My team and I won the Newmedia Invision Award, Newsweek’s Editor’s Choice Award and Parenting Magazine’s Magic Software Award for a musical painting app for preschoolers called "Paint ‘N’ Play". I directed many episodes of children’s television. But I really wanted to tell larger, strange, funny stories for adults. I've written a few short stories and the darkly comic novels "At Large" and "Nora-9". I read a lot of hard science (or, at least, I try to). Real science plays into most of my work. I have spent some considerable time thinking about the obesity epidemic and the extinction of the human species; subjects that I think are closely related in a number of peculiar ways. Here's my official quote: "There are some difficult social problems that are not going to be solved until we can laugh and are no longer frightened by them." |

The Growling | by David Jeffery Sep. 16, 2010 | 3374 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Dave Jeffery is 46 and lives with his family in rural Worcestershire. He was born in The Black Country and spent most of his youth dreaming of writing and drawing comic strips for DC Thompson, creators of The Beano and The Dandy. Dave completed his first novel, Badlands, at the age of ten and admits that it was 'pretty awful'. He still has it hidden somewhere in his loft. At school he used to write and illustrate comics for his school friends, selling them for a few pennies. At 15 years of age, he was invited to Dundee to see DC Thompson’s offices after sending his portfolio to them. Nothing may have come of the visit but the dream of getting work published continued. He is perhaps best known for his Beatrice Beecham series originally with Chipmunka Publications, London. This adventurous, super-sleuth teenager is currently on her second adventure with a third, Beatrice Beecham’s Cryptic Crypt, due out in 2011. The eBook Housefull of Horrors is released through Smashwords on October 31st and contains all seven Beatrice Beecham chapbooks. Writing as David Jeffery, this author also publishes adult and young adult horror and supernatural fiction. His zombie novel Necroloplis Rising will be released on September 11th through Smashwords. The prelude chapbook Splatoon is available now by following the book cover link on the home page. His Beatrice Beecham Presents: Campside Chillers collection will also be available early next year. In the interim Dave's short stories can be found in the Creature Feature anthology and his story Masquerade has been accepted for inclusion in the forthcoming WATCH anthology from Imprint Phoenix Publications. When he is not writing novels Dave works as a mental health practitioner. He has published an academic book with John Wiley & Sons and articles in his field of mental health whilst presenting on the international stage. He is in the process of editing another book for Speechamrk Publishing Ltd, for release in 2011. He is also author of Finding Jericho, a novel for young adults released through Chipmunka Publications, London exploring the relationship between a 15 year old boy and an uncle who has been diagnosed with manic depression. This book has been endorsed by the mental health charity MIND. Dave enjoys music, playing guitar and was once in a band called The Lion Farm who took their name from the council estate where he was dragged up. |

| Author bio: Tom Raimbault resides in the Chicago land area with his wife and two daughters. When not writing, he works as a lab technician at a telecommunications company and is self-described on his resume as a “technology professional†who has worked with cellular & IP infrastructure, biomedical equipment, emergency two-way radios and computer hardware. Tom began to produce weird writings back in 2000 while working the graveyard shift. The nightly edits were emailed to a small collection of coworkers who looked forward to something unusual to keep them awake or humored. This practice was ended when he was moved to a different shift. Sadly, his enjoyment of writing was forgotten for several years, until the autumn of 2007, when old friends received a “blast from the past†email with the recognizable words, “Hello Allâ€. The strange writings and short stories had resumed and a personal website was soon to follow. In autumn of 2009, Tom published his first book, Freaked out Horror (a collection of short stories). The work has been temporarily unpublished and will be re-released in 2011 with many additions, revisions and improvements. Check out his website that includes the blog at: http://sites.google.com/site/tomraimbaultwritings/ Tom is always open to new friends on Facebook where he shares photos from his nature hikes, family vacations and any random thoughts throughout the day. I am a Virgo, an amateur Tarot Card Reader, a romantic and just a thirty something girl trying to find her place in the world. I adore beautiful pictures and inspiring words. I believe that a life lived with love and excitement in your heart is the most fulfilling type. My passions include writing, surfing, yoga, snowboarding, travelling, good music, volunteering and op shopping. Being honest and taking risks is how I live my life. I love gifts and surprises. One day I hope to buy a rescue dog, and when I do I want to call it either Jack or Roxy! I dream about starting up a charity, but really don't know where to start. I love horses, Chanel, and genuine people. My personal commitment is to treat everyone how I would like to be treated, don’t judge, and just trust that everybody is doing their best with what they know now. My passion is to hopefully help others discover how to live the life they have dreamed of and become the authentic selves they were born to be. It’s my ongoing discovery of the purpose of life and the things which make me happy, and I hope it helps you re-discover yourself as well. |

The Harcombe Diet: 25 Members' Recipes | by Zoe Harcombe Nov. 30, 2010 | 4780 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Zoë’s passion is her vocation. Zoë spends her time researching and writing about obesity, diets and weight loss and she works exclusively in this field. She is author of the best selling book "Stop Counting Calories and Start Losing Weight", which was the follow-up to "Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim". The result of 20 years’ research into the causes of overeating, Zoë’s books go against traditional diet advice and are the first to address the three fundamental medical conditions that cause food cravings and therefore the compulsion to overeat. This understanding has helped tens of thousands of people lose weight quickly, easily and healthily through The Harcombe Diet approach. Zoë was the first person from her state school to graduate from Cambridge University. The paradox of escalating obesity and overwhelming desire to be slim has been a constant fascination to her and she set out to try to understand the obesity epidemic in the late 1980's, when UK obesity rates had just hit double figures. By the end of the millennium, UK obesity rates were 22.6% and 25.8% for men and women respectively and have worsened further since. By studying nutrition and, more importantly, by questioning every principle taught in nutrition and public health dietary advice, Zoë has found virtually every 'fact' to be anything but. From misapplying thermodynamics to five-a-day having no evidence base; from 1lb not equalling 3,500 calories to our eat less/do more advice being fundamentally flawed, very little has stood up to scrutiny. Zoë's most hardback book "The Obesity Epidemic: What caused it? How can we stop it?" is the presentation of what we have got wrong and the evidence for what would be right. |

The Hard Day's Night Hotel | by Severin Rossetti Dec. 31, 2010 | 4745 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Severin Rossetti was a teacher of fine art, but now works in a Liverpool museum/gallery, less money but a lot less stress. At the same time that he turned from teaching fine art, he also turned from its practice -have you seen the crap that passes for fine art these days?!?- to concentrate on writing. After many rejection slips he finally had some encouragement. 'Interesting,' said one editor, 'but it lacks passion. Spice it up a bit.' Which he did, only to be told 'wow!'... 'well!'... 'spiced up, yes, but we can't possibly publish this!' Fortunately, others could, with the result that his erotic stories have been published in the UK and the USA in various magazines and anthologies. Novels and short story collections have also been published in the US by Renaissance Ebooks.com. If the erotic genre is not your thing, however, please note that also available on Smashwords are more 'serious' works, some for sale but many for free. Strange, though, that the erotic genre is proving the most popular, and especially the free ones. So... a cry from the heart... feel free to try the free ones but PLEASE, also, splash out a dollar or two if you can afford it! And if you want to know any more, please contact the author at severinrossetti@aol.com |

The Hardest Word | by Paul Samael Nov. 24, 2011 | 9757 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: After a spell in the SAS, Paul Samael worked undercover for the CIA on a mission to infiltrate a vicious gang of Colombian drug smugglers and drive a stake through the heart of their leader (who was a vampire), whilst simultaneously thwarting the plans of sinister men in the Pentagon to do sinister things with mind-controlling drugs (his recall of events from this point on is a little hazy). Anyway, on his release from hospital, he suddenly realised that what he had really wanted to do all his life was write literary fiction - so here he is on Smashwords. Re-reading the above, it occurs to me that it may have been a mistake to write my web-bio shortly after receiving a bad review of the opening chapters of my novel (on a peer review site) from a self-described “action junkieâ€, who lamented the lack of car chases, explosions, scenes of torture etc (I should point out that I had categorised my work as 'literary fiction', which is not a genre widely recognised for its edge-of-the-seat action sequences). The truth, as usual, is rather more mundane - I work in an office, am married with two children and have published two not terribly successful non-fiction books under my real name (Paul Samael is a pen name). At the moment, I am making steady (if glacial) progress towards producing an ebook edition of my novel - and in the meantime have been publishing some shorter pieces here on Smashwords. I've also been trying to make time to review free fiction by other self-published authors on Smashwords (mainly under the "Literary" tag), my aim being to demonstrate that “free†and “self-published†don’t always deserve the stigma that’s sometimes attached to them. |

| Author bio: A.H. Scott resides in the Northeastern United States. She's a new voice and vision of fiction and poetry. I have been writing short stories and poetry ever since childhood. But, now I'm dipping my toe into the pond of publishing. As an author, I enjoy letting my characters and plots that I've created get inside of the reader's heads. I make a promise to anyone that rolls the dice and catches a glimpse of my work that you will never be bored. Your eyes, mind and soul shall be thrilled. This is my bond to you, the reader. No simplicity ever from A.H. Scott. Always complexity is my main intent on anyone who reads my work. “I want the reader to be affected in two ways – above the neck & below the beltâ€. – A.H. Scott ----------- "I don't write for children. I write for adults". - A.H. Scott ------ "I believe art should be as enigmatic as the artist who creates it." A. H. Scott ------ "Silence is acceptance. Acceptance is conquest. Conquest is a rainbow obscured by a black cloud of contempt". - A.H. Scott ------------- "MY WORDS ARE MY CALLING CARD". - A.H. Scott 8/2/11 |
