Foreword
Why in the world would the economy affect our beauty? It's not because we can no longer afford our basic skin care or make up. It's not because you can't afford facials anymore. It's not because you can't eat out as much as you used to. It is because our environment, and more importantly, how we perceive it, process it, and react to it, directly affects our belief system. It is because what you see on the outside, is actually radiated from what is in the inside. If the inside is in trouble, it would take the greatest magicians in Hollywood to make the outside look OK, much less, look great.
When we are distressed inside, such as is seen as a result of all the changes in this rather bizarre, or shall we say "nasty" economy, it affects many aspects of us individually, and as families. It is quite possible, however, to actually excel in a time like this, rather than shrink in fear and frustration. This is a time when we need to take action, not have the "action", take us.

Chapter One-
What's Happening
There are a huge amount of issues and feelings going on with a poor economy. Especially when it directly affects you. So how does it affect you? What have you had to change, adapt, give up, throw away, keep, or just plain forget about because of what's happening today?
Salary Cuts
How many people can you name right this minute that have recent-ly had some form of salary or benefit cut? Is it you? It's out there, and it's everywhere.
There are many people out there today that would rather take a sal-ary cut, or even an hourly cut, than be eliminated from their jobs. Some are losing retirement funds, and many, often in investment circles, have lost their retirements, not to mention their long-held positions. Some of these folks were nearly ready to retire! Or has the idea of retiring as we formerly knew it sound ridiculous today? For many, sadly it does.
Job Security
Just as folks are taking salary cuts to keep their jobs, others are be-ing cut to three or four days per week, offered tiny early-retirement options, or worse, are hearing nothing from management but hear about businesses daily where the employees showed up only to be greeted by a padlocked door and a sign: "OUT OF BUSINESS". That was their notification that they were now joining the growing rank of the unemployed.
Changing Plans
Obviously with so many decreasing incomes and unknown job sta-bility many people have to change long-standing plans. Whether it is cancelling a vacation, postponing buying a new car, or even dropping the idea of a new house, all of these are big disappointments that register deep within you. After a while, you start to think "what next?!?"
Fear of the Unknown
How do you describe what you are feeling in this situation? UNCERTAINTY is one noun. Nervous, scared, fearful, pensive, uneasy, wary, edgy, anxious, tense, overwrought, apprehensive, distraught, strained, and many other frightening adjectives can explain the day to day feelings when we are dealing with an economy such as this. With the rash of huge financial failures, Bernie Madoff, Bear Sterns and Lehman Brothers, and financial markets around the world, to name the tip of the iceberg, it is virtually impossible not to wonder just what type of catastrophe is coming your way tomorrow.
This state of uncertainty is incredibly stressful, moment by mo-ment, day by day. The good news is that there are ways to deal with this pressure. No one is alone in this. Nor is this the first time a person has been through it .I will show you how to deal with this type of stress, or uncertainty, and actually benefit from it. Many people have. You (or I) are not the first to go through this. Thankfully we have many eons to look back upon. Throughout history these issues have come, and they have gone. You will get through it all. And you will be better for all you go through!
Worry
Matthew 6:2 7 states: "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"
That verse is so important because human beings waste so much time floundering in their own worry. It solves nothing. Working positively solves absolutely everything. But we are used to worrying…let's take a look.
This is how worry shows up in you:
oYou have increased Blood Pressure
oYou may deal with Insomnia
oYou simply cannot Focus
oYou become Confused at times
oYou realize you are in a state of Chaos
oYou realize your temper is much shorter
oAll of these increase worry and add Stress
From Wikipedia
Worry is thoughts and images of a negative nature in which mental attempts are made to avoid anticipated potential threats. As an emotion it is experienced as anxiety or concern about a real or imagined issue, usually personal issues such as health or finances or broader ones such as environmental pollution and social or technologi-cal change.
What this means is that worry in and of itself, is DESTRUCTIVE!
This does not mean that you should go on giddily through life pay-ing no attention to warnings along the way. That would be frivolous. What this means is that worry in itself creates no good. However, caution should make one look to means to alleviate damage. This is not the same as worry. If you can fix something, fix it, and move on. If not, make a plan, but don't spend time simply worrying about it. That practice will actually make the situation, and the worry itself, worse.
Stress
So what then is stress? Briefly, stress is both a physical and emo-tional response to an event or situation. We all have experienced stress. Sometimes we are under such stress that we begin to act out on others. Why would I say such a thing? Because these are the things we feel when we are under stress:
Pounding heart, high blood pressure, clenched jaws, grinding teeth, indigestion, headache, fatigue, skin problems, weight gain or loss, increased sweating, constipation or diarrhea, etc.
With the possibility of stress around every corner, and the addi-tional possibility of suffering the consequences of uncontrolled stress outlined above, we have to develop ways to deal with it. Thankfully, it's not out of your reach. You have the capability to keep your stress level under control, and even use stress to your advantage.
Under Control? Keeping stress under control is more than just maintaining your mental composure - it is actually deciding just what you are willing to get stressed about. You really do have a choice to foster a stressful situation in your mind, or to let it go, saving yourself for something more important. It makes a good practice to start consciously "tossing it out" or "delving in" depending upon the severity of the issue. It also makes a good practice to add more to the "tossing" list. So many things we either cannot change, or really shouldn't be messing with. This is directly akin to "choosing your battles".
Chapter Two-
Why is It Happening?
This economy can make you feel powerless. When you wake up in the morning and glance at the paper or turn on the TV, you are bom-barded with negative economic news that really does affect what you might do today. These things seemed to happen overnight and you had no ability to affect them. In this respect, you really are powerless unless you choose to move your assets to a more secure location or quickly run for a political office if you think you have an answer. In reality though, there are multiple things you can do to empower yourself in any situation, even this economy.
The Feeling of Powerlessness
First let's take a look at who is really powerless, or who has been powerless in history. When we begin life as an infant, if left to our own accord, yes, we are powerless. Quite. However nature provides inherent methods in newborns to attract the attention of the mother, in order to meet any need that comes along. The child learns how to summon mother when he's tired, cold, hungry, uncomfortable, or has gas. The mother's equally inherent reaction is to provide comfort, food, and warmth to this tiny, helpless thing.
Children also are not self-sufficient, though can attain much more power than an infant. They can manipulate. Children (depending upon intelligence and background) can decide with their minds what they want to happen, then look actively for the means to make it happen. We see this all the time. Often, it becomes extreme in today's world. So, when are they powerless? When they are extremely ill, when lost in the dark, or most desperately, when kidnapped. This is the ultimate example of powerlessness.
Other examples throughout history include slaves throughout the world, and throughout time, those held captive in the holocaust, or way back to when the Israelites were held captive in Egypt. The one thing all these people had however was control over their thoughts, and their minds.
Why Look At These Examples?
These examples are important in order for you to see the contrast between your life, and lives where the situation truly left them power-less, at least for a time. We know from Biblical history that the Israe-lites were able to finally escape from Egypt. We also know that there are still holocaust survivors today who were able to persevere, use various tactics, and finally escape or were freed. What this means for us today is that as long as you have control over your mind, most often in circumstances less than those listed above, you are not powerless, and can take control of your situation. Remember, everything that comes to pass in your life that you actually want to happen (don't forget to keep things out that you don't want to happen!) has first originated in your mind, in your thoughts. Thoughts are truly things, powerful things, and no matter what you desire, if you direct your thoughts in the basic direction of your goal, then follow it up with action, it can, and will, be achieved.
Locking the Door to the Negative
Since you really DO have control of your mind, you can decide what comes in, and of course, what goes out. Let it be said here that what goes out is every bit as important as what goes in. But let's look first at what's coming in.
We are deluged all day long with incoming messages arising from various forms. It naturally should be up to us to decide what we let in, and what we ultimately feel we need to lock out. However most of us fail to adequately filter what we allow in, and then fail to adequately decide what the incoming messages actually mean to us. These mes-sages can become confusing, negative, cluttering, and can completely throw us off track of what we really want, and really need, to keep us focused on our goals and will lead us to becoming who and what we want ourselves to be. To avoid fear and confusion, and to gain success, regardless of you perceive success, you must place a "lock" on what information you will not allow in, and open that lock to those thoughts and ideas that are positive and helpful to you. If too many negative or "bad" thoughts or ideas are getting in, then it is time to mentally, but actually, in an ordered sequence, take off the old lock, design the new one, and put it in place.
Chapter Three-
Enhancing Your Beauty From The Inside
Taking Control
We heard earlier that the only things you can truly control are your thoughts. And, if you take control of first your thoughts, you can then control so much more of every aspect of your life. Thoughts are actual things, and are the most powerful things you will ever create. They can build anything, and they can destroy anything. If you have not first thought it, it has not been something that you created. It could even be something as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a cup of coffee. Of course things happen to you simply because you are alive, but there is nothing you have achieved, or made happen, without first putting it into thought.
We've heard about keeping thoughts positive. That's because if you envision bad outcomes, miserable failures, and general gloom and doom, that is what you will actually foster, whether you want to or not. It is inevitable. You see, you never, ever have to allow negative thoughts to enter. But if you keep them positive, continually envision-ing, with genuine expectation (this is called faith), positive outcomes and success, the positive outcomes and successes will follow. Thought, is that powerful.
Your Plan
The key to any improvement is to actually make a plan. This is not just a vague, mental structure in your mind, or an idea of what you "kinda" need to do. It needs to be a solid plan. Creating a solid plan should be a part of anything you want to achieve, big or little. It doesn't have to be pages and pages, a one page directive in most cases will suffice. Why is this important? Because you will easily lose focus and direction if you don't have something solid to return to. Blockades will occur along the way. Looking back at your initial objective will serve to keep you on track, and enable you to slightly alter your track as needed.
#1. The Stress
It is time to "check the stress" and utilize this easily-out-of-control phenomenon for what it was intended: To provide the energy needed to carry out the necessary. This alone alleviates the symptoms of stress discussed earlier. So, how do you check the stress?
Look at the cause of these symptoms of stress. It is important to look at your feelings of anxiety and to arrive at the source. Let's say it is a large $2000 bill that needs to be paid by the end of the month. You only have $800 in your account, and have no idea where the rest of it is coming from. Today is the 20th of the month. Let's further pretend there are severe consequences coming if the $2000 is not paid. It is easy to ignore this for a few more days because procrastination provides and immediate release from the stress, but very shortly the stress comes back with a vengeance. In other words, the procrastina-tion only makes the situation worse. Always. So what do you do? This is where the plan comes in. There are multiple ways to deal with a situation; the hardest part is starting to deal with it. Make a plan. In the previously mentioned scenario, it would make sense to look at what other bills can perhaps be put off in order to put some of that designated money toward this very important debt. In addition, contacting the receiver of the money will undoubtedly put a better light on the situation, and like it or not, you may be able to make a compromise or alter the payment. Either way, simply discussing the matter will take some stress out of the mix. Perhaps there are a few things you have been meaning to put on eBay, or you could have a garage sale. While these avenues are not easy, they are ways of dealing with the underlying issue causing the stress. Just addressing those, putting them down on paper, and proceeding with a plan, will change the way you view the day, and the situation. It really is not as difficult as it seems.
#2 The Tone
Everything in life has a "tone" to it. It is this "tone" that sets the stage for the underlying urgency or non-urgency accompanying the thought or issue. Animals are very adept at picking up the tone of a person or a situation. They also sometimes get it wrong, as our dogs do when there is a mild rain or thunderstorm but they seem sure it is the end of the world. It is speculated that this ability to detect tone is enhanced by certain vibrations sent out by the brain or chemicals released from the person who is setting the tone. Whatever the method of detection, the tone is of utmost importance.
Concentrate on the tone of your thoughts. If your tone is filled with fear, you will validate that fear and further sabotage your efforts to release fear and stress. It is important to understand that you are not the first person to ever be in this situation. Life has simply gone on too long. No situation is really unique, not even the one you are currently in. Others have been there, and these others have gotten through it. Some probably better than others and if so, it was most likely by addressing it head-on. If you can gather positive thoughts and beliefs about this situation, and focus on them, a positive outcome will occur. Practice working with your positive thoughts and beliefs in order to make the positive outcome a reality.
#3 Small Scenarios
To avoid being overwhelmed before making the big plan, start with a few small scenarios. Don't spend too much time on this; just direct your thoughts in a general direction.
Create small plans or scenarios to deal with the situation. As in the above example, what this does is create a place to start. Once your mind gets going, the rest is easy. Don't hold anything back. Utilize your imagination to create different mini-plans and envision the outcomes of these plans. Choose the ones that work best and…proceed! Once this is completed, it is time to move on to more encompassing scenarios. Scenarios that will help place you in a position where the smaller things won't seem so large.
Chapter Four-
The Big Picture
Back to the Plan
OK, you know you need to make a real plan. But make a plan for what? It is now when you finalize what it is you want to do, where you want to be in the near (keep thinking near) future. If you are feeling stressed and overloaded and not-so-beautiful in this economy (or any economy), then you really are not where you want to be, are you?
However you cannot change your situation if you don't know where you want to go. You know you are not totally happy about where you are, but do you find yourself saying "but what can I do?" Do you look at others and think "I would like to be like that" or "I wish I had only half the money they have, then I could do whatever I wanted." Actually, in order to be happy in your situation, it is impor-tant for you to have a valid goal, have a goal that is within your reach, even if it takes a lot of hard work, and direct your plan to achieving that goal. You will truly only be happy when you are working toward, and making strides toward achieving something that you want. What you want may be a safe family environment or even becoming the CEO of a large company.
Consider your ideal, no matter what it is, what would like your life to look like, right now? Let's say you had done things differently, or really don't mind the way things were done, it's just time for more. Choose what the outcome of your vision would be. Take that ideal, and then work backwards, toward the steps that it would take to get there. Don't lose sight of the ideal. This is not quite like the earlier little scenarios to get you through the moment, but scenarios or micro-plans that will lead to your ultimate goal, which you are deciding on now.
Once you start to play out your micro-plans in your mind, each heading toward the desired big outcome, you will gain momentum. This momentum will be squashed however if you place these micro-plans on a back-burner, even if only intended to be for a short time. Keeping these plans in direct view is the key to moving on and obtain-ing the Big Outcome. If you are a visual person, this is one illustration to keep it real and in center:
I ÷ mp × ts = BO
Broken down it is: Idea ÷ micro-plans × time spent = Big Out-come. Of course it could be broken down further, such as
I ÷ mp × ts = O ÷ mmp × mts = BO
This is simply more detailed and progressive. But for some people, it helps to keep them focused. The above equation represents: Idea divided by micro plans times time spent equals Outcome divided by more micro plans times more time spent equals Big Outcome. In some respects, "time spent" is one of the most important additions to the "Idea" because without some time in directing and planning, nothing will happen. However, the most important thing to keep in mind is that "BO" is there, simply waiting to be claimed. Additionally, the latter equation can continually be expounded upon as your goals and desires grow and mature.
Chapter Five-
Taking Care Of You
You Need Care Too
The main key to be beautiful in this economy, this world situation, your current family or work situation, or anything you can think of is something that most people don't consider first-line necessary. It is "Taking Care of You".
This may sound counter-intuitive, especially for women or mothers, but if you are to function to the fullest, you have to look at you first. Take for example the ever-present airline drill before taking off. We hear about the "No-Smoking" on this flight, the restrooms and the smoke detectors, the $2000 fine, the fasten-seat belt sign, and most importantly, what happens if the cabin should lose pressure. The oxygen masks would pop out of the ceiling with the instructions to "place the mask over your own mouth first, before assisting others". That means taking care of yourself even before taking care of your children. Why is that? Of course we know it is because if you were to take care of those less able than you, you would most likely lose consciousness in a real air pressure emergency and those less able than you most likely would not be able to assist you. There you'd be, sitting next to your small children, out cold while they look around in terror (or amazement, depending upon how easily they are frightened) wondering why you have chosen that moment to take a nap! Unless you've never flown before, that example is quite clear. Look a bit closer, the meaning pertains to you in any situation just the same as in the airline drill. If you are heavily taxed from unmet needs there is no way you can function well, and most likely will squander your remain-ing scarce resources simply because you cannot function efficiently. It is not unlike an older car in desperate need of a tune-up and mainten-ance. No matter how carefully you drive it, it cannot function efficiently and most likely will require more gas and more oil than if it were tuned, tires rotated and balanced, and all hoses and belts functioning properly. These are the basic needs to assure your car functions properly. What are your basic needs?
The Basic Needs
Abraham Maslow, in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motiva-tion", described the basic human needs in "healthy" individuals. He did not study the mentally ill as much as he studied those who were well adjusted and successful.

The base of the pyramid depicts our physiological needs, then proceeds upwards to what might even be considered luxuries once we have food and shelter. This hierarchy is taught throughout the world in the health sciences as a foundation for health and for success. But how does this translate directly to us?
Let's get past the obvious. We of course need food and shelter. We need clothes, since our society and most of our weather dictates it. But what else? The simple things you need to do to be ready for anything are:
oEATING RIGHT. We mentioned we need food, but the type of food we eat is almost as important as the actual consumption of something (meaning the taking in of calories). Today we are learning that there are foods that decrease the risk of cancer such as shitake, maitake, and reishi mushrooms. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage all contain antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin which show some cancer decreasing properties, and some studies are promising that they may be effective against macular degeneration. Decreasing the consumption of red meat and choosing organic foods such as free-range chicken fed only food without pesticides and wild salmon rather than farmed salmon are touted to decrease the risk, and perhaps actually regress some cancers. The low-down however? Eating right makes your mind and body feel good. When you feel good, so many things are possible that are not possible (or at least likely to happen) when you don't feel good.
oEXERCISE. The definition of exercise appears to be as indi-vidual as the person performing the exercise. My brother tends to feel that walking to the car is exercise, and others feel that several hours of strenuous cardio is the only thing that constitutes the real thing. What's right for you? Truly, it does vary, but the important thing to know is that exercise has several immediate benefits, and obtaining those benefits will greatly increase your inner and outer beauty. At the very least, you should begin your day with a vigorous walk. Not only does a walk provide cardio exercise but most importantly it gives your mind time to achieve clarity. This is beneficial before your day starts, or after your day, to put everything in a proper perspective. You will amaze yourself at how organized you will become if you start out with an active (not strolling here) walk. Also, leave the headphones at home for better organization throughout your day. Of course upper body work is important for many reasons, but that goes beyond the scope of this book.
oREST. Adequate rest and sleep is probably the most easily neglected necessity today. If you want to finish a paper or project, you stay up late. If you want to get a head start on a project, you get up earlier than usual. These activities are OK if done rarely. It is when they get to be a habit that the toll starts to become evident. This toll shows up not only in your looks, but in your outlook (more important than your looks by far!), your physical body posture, and in your activities. You lack clarity, lack energy, lack direction, and lack ingenuity.
oTIME FOR YOURSELF. While some may attempt to put this in with sleep-time, time alone is actually very important. Unless you live alone, this facet of life is often ignored, yet it is one of the most powerful tools you can utilize. You yourself are left to define what "time for yourself" really means, whether it is a walk alone on the beach, sitting in a swing, taking a stroll (here it is OK to stroll), getting a pedicure, or just sitting in your special place with eyes closed, this time should be claimed for you without a trace of guilt. It is a necessity of a healthy life. Use it to strengthen yourself.
These are the building blocks that will keep you solid, sane, and strong. If you ignore any of these for a prolonged period of time, it will become evident. Oddly enough, it will be more evident to others than it will be to you. Don't go there. Keep yourself physically and mentally healthy!
Chapter Five-
How To Put You First, Step By Step
ACHIEVE PEACE OF MIND AND RADIANT BEAUTY BY…
These are the action steps to be aware of daily to keep yourself at your absolute best.
1. AVOID NEGATIVE PEOPLE. Negative energy is very con-tagious. Even if you don't share their negative outlook, there is a sort of "heaviness" in the air when negative people are around and you can't help but be eventually affected by it. At first it may seem simply uncomfortable, but then you start to adapt little viewpoints similar to those that you are hearing. If you remain in negative company, you actually begin to form original negative thoughts. These thoughts breed like rabbits and soon begin to consume you. They are poisonous and should be avoided as if you came across a poisonous snake on a hiking trail. You wouldn't hang around to get to know the snake better, would you? If you cannot help someone who is negative by displaying positive thoughts and suggestions, then leave them as if they were the snake getting ready to strike.
2. KEEP BALANCED. Much of what you have recently read here discusses keeping balanced. Everything has to be in balance or there is a shift. Whatever is weighing the heaviest will be the direction the shift will take. Most of the time allowing a shift adds further stress and reduces your ability to be successful day to day. Remember to keep your physical and mental self in balance, but also keep your activities in balance. Some time belongs to you, some to your family, your work, your spiritual life, etc., but don't ignore priorities.
3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH ENCOURAGING PEOPLE. This is the other side of "avoiding negative people". While it is important to avoid negative people, it is equally important to not leave a void in your life. You need people. You need companionship and you need others' viewpoints. We all do. When you find positive, encouraging people to be around, you will become more and more like them. When people are encouraging and have a positive disposition, nothing is impossible, and if you surround yourself with these people, you will be amazed at how many are truly successful and have an obvious radiant beauty.
4. BE ENCOURAGING TO OTHERS. When you are encourag-ing and genuinely helpful to others, it shows in your entire being. People flock to uplifting people, and the reward is internal and exter-nal. Taking it a step further, if you were to help out a stranger in need, no matter how small, such as holding a door for an elderly woman, or stopping traffic so one with walking difficulties can cross the street safely, the "high" you get is difficult to describe, yet exhilarating! You have a lot to offer and it is meant to be shared. It is through this sharing that you are truly blessed (regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs) and can learn what is meant by "being alive".
5. HAVE FUN WITH LOW COST ACTIVITIES. In this econ-omy, the feeling of "I can't afford that" can bring you down and will show in your face and in your posture. That is not an attractive look, and others know "something" is wrong. The truth is, you can make fun in any economy, even this one. It can be something as simple as inviting friends to come over and cook in the backyard together or making popcorn and renting a movie. The important thing is to not just do these things, but make them an event. By placing your own person-al value on something, the value naturally rises. It is not a game, it is real. For example, go hiking. But don't just gather your stuff together and head out. Even if you are by yourself, plan your event of hiking by carefully choosing your clothes, your shoes (probably not much of a choice, but still), plan where you are going to go. Then live it. Smell the outdoors, explore the nature, notice the colors in the sun and in the shade and how they differ. There is so much that is offered in this world and appreciating it is just another way to grow. Unfortunately we often take it for granted. If you can appreciate the outer beauty of other things, your natural beauty will continue to emerge. Give it a shot.
By changing just a few small things in your life, you can Look Younger, Feel More Alive, and Be More Confident.
