Black spiders are not afraid of the dark
In mythology Arachne was part woman, part spider. It is said one day she would return to seek vengeance upon the gods.
It all began innocently enough. These things often do. Jessica and I were working late one night in the produce section at an Oklahoma Whole Foods. Oh, but she wasn’t using the name Jessica Nigri at the time. She was just plain old Helga Haverstram. The fateful event had not yet occurred. The one which changed her life forever and doomed every man, woman, and child on Earth.
We were unpacking a box of bananas from Honduras when it happened. Helga was bitten by a radioactive Brazilian Wandering Spider! The plane bearing the bananas from Honduras had passed through the cosmic rays from a supernova which had exploded over 5000 years ago. As they often do, a tiny little Brazilian Wandering Spider had hidden itself in the bananas.
As she lay in the breakroom running a fever, Helga began to change. The cosmic energy began to merge her DNA and that of the spider. Plain old Helga began to get hot, really hot. The spider DNA gave her enhanced senses, reflexes, and muscle tone along with all the powers of the Brazilian Wandering Spider. You see, the Brazilian Wandering Spider doesn’t shoot webs like other spiders. Its scientific name Phoneutria is Greek for murderess. What it does isn’t very nice, but what it does, it does best. It hunts, it kills. Like I said, what it does best. It also possesses a venom which causes painful erections. Then you die.
No one survived. To fuel her transformation Jessica needed blood and lots of it. No one survived in the Whole Foods that night. Why did she spare me? Who knows. Perhaps some part of her still remembered the nights we shared together restocking the produce aisle. Or perhaps her spider half was keeping me around as a failsafe..a snack.
To escape the Oklahoma authorities Helga moved to Phoenix. Having always been a fan of the original Spider Woman, Jessica Drew, she changed her name to Jessica. The species of Wandering Spider that had bitten her was Phoneutria nigriventer. She changed her last name to Nigri. Thus Jessica Nigri was born.
One of Jessica’s cosmically enhanced abilities was the ability to mimic both the appearance and powers of anyone who’d blood she drank. Her residual cosmic energy enabled her to add their DNA to her own. She became quite the celebrity in the cosplay circuit. Everyone thought, wow, what a cool outfit! Not realizing that for every cosplay character she portrayed, she had stolen not only their look but their lives as well.
In the wild, Phoneutria nigriventer mates from April to June. As fate would have it, this coincided with the Phoenix Comicon. Perhaps because it was spider mating season. Perhaps because of the scent of so much fresh nerdling blood. Jessica’s spider half began to exert its dominance over her human half. In her final transformation she was more spider than Jessica. The Spider Nigri had arisen!
Many a young nerdling lost their lives behind the Aqua Red booth that day. Ever wonder what the red stands for? BLOOD! The Arizona Avengers, perhaps the only group with the power to stop her, were the first to fall. Thor was investigating the disappearances of so many young nerdlings around the Aqua Red booth when he encountered the Spider Nigri.
(Some of you may say that I’m having Thor die first because he had a better Thor cosplay than mine. It was 100 degrees outside. How was I supposed to wear that heavy leather trenchcoat? Mine would have been Ultimate Thor.Ultimate as in BEST. Whatever. I’m totally over it.)
Even thousands of years of combat had not prepared the God of Thunder for this encounter. In her Spider Nigri form, Jessica had developed psychic venom. This made any combatant instantly gain a painfully intense woody. This REALLY destroyed their concentration and took their head out of the game. So to speak. Even with his centuries of battle experience, Thor was no match for this tactic. Spider Nigri feasted on Asgardian blood and found it sweet.
When she added Asgardian DNA to her own, Jessica gained the full powers of the gods. She even began to generate a type of Asgardian steel armor, hard as adamantium, called Arachnamantium©. Wolverine could have stopped her. However, his feral nature only served to make him more susceptible to the effects of Nigri Venom. With Logan’s healing factor and the full powers of a god, Jessica swatted Earth’s other heroes aside like they were nothing. Each time feasting and adding their powers to her own. Now nothing on Earth could stop the Spider Nigri. Nothing. Once she is through with this planet, Asgard awaits. Ragnarok..the twilight of the gods.
