“Look Daddy, look. A lizard!“ Little Ben shouted as he tugged at his Daddy’s hand. Scurrying in the leaves was a lizard.

Unlike most little boys, Little Ben was not at all afraid of lizards – in fact, he loved lizards.

“Look, get him, Daddy! Get him,” as he pulled his Daddy closer to the leaves on the ground.

Little Ben’s Daddy could hardly see the lizard. Then the leaves rustled and his Daddy saw the lizard. He was almost the same color of the leaves.

“Little Ben, what will you do with him if I get him?” asked Daddy.

“I will play with him!” Little Ben’s eyes were big and excited; and he had a huge grin on his face.

His Daddy carefully picked up the lizard and placed it on Little Ben’s shirt. Little Ben squealed with delight! “Can I keep him, Daddy, can I? Please.”

“Oh, no, lizards need to live outside.”

Little Ben answered sadly, “Why Daddy? I will love him. I will feed him and give him water, and let him take a bath with me every night. And I will name him -- Izard. Please Daddy, please?”

Little Ben’s Daddy told him that lizards like to run and play in the leaves. There were no leaves in the house. “When we are outside we will let him play on your shirt. You can pet him and talk to him. Then we can let him go back on the leaves so he can go home to his family and maybe tomorrow you will see him again.”

Little Ben was not happy with that idea, but his Daddy never lied to him so he knew his Daddy was right.

It was soon time to let Izard go back to the leaves. Little Ben was not happy.

That night when Little Ben said his bedtime prayers, he asked God, “please watch over Izard and keep him warm and dry through the night, just like my Daddy takes care of me.”

Everyday Little Ben would hurry outside to see if he could find Izard. But Izard was shy and good at playing hide and seek.

Then on a sunny Sunday afternoon Little Ben’s Daddy heard his son squeal with delight, “Daddy, it’s Izard, and he has a little lizard with him.”

Little Ben’s Daddy knelt down beside him. “You see son, Izard has Little Izard with him. It’s his son. He wanted his son to meet you and your Daddy.”

From that day on, every time Little Ben saw Izard he would play with him, ask him about Little Izard, and then tell him good night. Little Ben finally understood why Izard the Lizard needed to live outside. He needed to take care of his son just like Little Ben’s Daddy took care of him

“Good bye Izard and Little Izard, too. I Hope I see you tomorrow.”
