Gunshin Date
The Samurai Squirrel
There was a tap on my back door
I wondered who it could be
The back yard was empty
No one could I see.
I turned to walk away
The tapping began once more.
I looked outside again
Then I heard a tap from the floor.
I looked down
To see
A squirrel
Was looking up at me.
I opened the door
To shoo him away.
Inside he ran quickly
“Pardon the intrusion but with you I must stay.”
His fur fluffed out
As he shook the rain from his robe.
I’ve never heard of a talking squirrel
Anywhere in the globe.
“Greetings,” he said.
To which I replied, “Hi.”
A confused look on my face
As he spoke, “I am a Samurai.”
“May I start a fire
To warm my rain soaked soul?”
“No,” I protested.
“Away you must go.”
“But I am sworn to protect you,
A powerful enemy you have made.
Now an evil soul,
But who once was my aide.”
“What enemy,” I asked.
“What do you mean?”
“He is a Ninja,
One you have seen.”
“I’ve never seen a ninja,
Not in person anyway.”
“Ah but you did take his picture
One bright sunny day.”
“He ran across your lawn
And up in a tree.
You snapped many pictures
And posted them for all the world to see.”
“But he is just a squirrel
He can do me no harm.”
“Do not let it fool you,
Our squirrely charm.”
“I am a Samurai
My name is Gunshin Date.”
He drew his tiny Katana sword
“Our lives are intertwined by Fate.”
With a smile I knelt down
And my hand he did shake.
“I know we will become great friends
Little Samurai Date.”
