PC Mouse
Chapter One
Monty Monitor worried about her little mouse. PC was a happy little fellow, but he was restless. He longed to see the real world, not just images on a screen. His father, CB Control Box, got very cross with him for wandering off on his own at night, instead of sleeping safely on his cosy red mat. His sister, Qwerty Keyboard, just couldn't understand him. Why would anyone want to get down off the safe, comfortable, computer table and go running about the floor? Really sometimes PC behaved more like a furry mouse than a computer one.
But PC wouldn't listen. He liked it on the floor. There was so much to see, even in the computer room; and he knew there were many more rooms beyond its big brown door. Oh, if only he could open it. One evening after the others had gone to sleep PC was surprised to see that the door had been left slightly open. It looked as if there might be just enough room for him to squeeze through. He did not want to wake the others, so very quietly he slid off his mat, rolled over the desktop and onto the top of the printer. From the sloping part at the back it wasn't too far form the floor. With one mighty jump he made it and ran towards the door.
He found himself in a dimly lit corridor on the other side. There wasn't much to see, except for more doors, but one of them had been left wide open. PC headed for it. He found himself in a very strange room; not like anything he had ever seen before. The strangest noise filled the air; it came from a large square object in the corner of the room, which had bars around it and there was something moving inside!
"Bbbb, da, da, da, Ag-oo-oo-oo"
PC didn't know what to make of it and he didn’t like it very much. He had just decided to go back where he came from, when someone spoke.
"What do you want?"
PC looked around. There wasn’t anyone there. He couldn't think where the voice had come from.
"I said what do you want?"
"Nothing ... err... where are you?”
"Up here."
PC looked up and saw a funny shaped box on the wall. It had a row of red lights all along the bottom of it; they flashed on and off in a pattern and looked as if they were chasing each other.
"Did you speak?"
"Yes, what do you want? Don't you know you’re not supposed to be in here?"
"Why?"
"This is the baby's room and I look after it. I’m the alarm. So please do me a favour and go away. I don't want it to start crying."
"I do like your lights,” said PC chattily. He was just beginning to enjoy himself. He liked meeting new friends.
"Will you p-l-e-a-s-e shhhh - oh no, too late!"
