Thanks to Everyone that Wished and is a part of this Art Project and special thanks to Hazel and Kent at Thump Coffee.
I started Wish on Wood as an Art Installation in a local coffee shop, in Bend Oregon USA. I had wanted to make a large art installation that people participated in and hung on the ceiling. The owners of the coffee shop said go a head and we will keep it up for a month maybe two. It has been up for 3 years and people have been making wishes everyday and I keep hanging them up. The wood comes from remnants from a door manufacture. The collection of wishes still amazes me and I want to share these unique pieces of art with people outside my town.
The wishes are amazing and more than I ever thought would happen. I started by asking people to write their wishes on a piece of wood, and now they know from word of mouth and write their wish without me saying anything. The visual way they are done are stunning. This book is a collection of a small sample of the wishes.
When I read the wishes they seem to fall into 3 categories.
1. Wishing for a particular outcome
2. A thought or gesture towards someone or something
3. A request or desire to do an activity.
Some cultures have customs in which people are encouraged to "make a wish", such as blowing out the candles on a birthday cake, seeing a shooting star at night, tossing a coin into a wishing well or fountain or breaking the wishbone of a cooked turkey. Many believe such wishes can only come true if you keep them a secret from other people. Others, on the other hand, believe that wishes come true only if you share them with someone else. This project shares the wishes.

If you want to make a wish, you have 3 ways to do it:
A. The easy way to make a wish, Come to Thump Coffee, 25 Northwest Minnesota Avenue, Bend, OR 97701, USA
B. Make a wish on a small piece of wood and Mail it to: Mark Bernahl, 706 NW Ogden, Bend OR USA 97701, USA
C. If you don't have any wood send me your address and name and two dollars and I will mail you a piece of wood and you can mail it back to me after you make your wish.
All wishes go up and will be seen by the public.
You don't get your wish back, it becomes part of the art installation.
