Leaving a Mark

Dedicated to my Grandmother – Johanna Zuiderwijk-Warmerdam

20 June 1866 – 11 January 1937 – Lisse, Holland.

We all leave a mark when we die, whether or not it is written in a book, a diary or by word of mouth. An imprint is left behind of all we have undertaken in our life time. Usually people do not talk about the past and so we cannot tell much of what they achieved in their lives. So it was with my maternal Grandmother.

On the card given out at the church at her funeral it just mentions when she was born, who she was married to and when she died. It also asked for the attendees to pray for her.

When I look at her photos in front of me now, I see a woman in her sixties who seems a very compact person in herself; closed lips and a clear steady look; large ears which indicates a great personality and a beautiful skin. She had a large forehead, meaning a good brain. She was a woman who had lived through a busy, fruitful life. It was never easy; yet she always made the best of every situation. She had seven children – Chris, Margareta, Seentje, Wilhelmina, Arie, Jo and Sebastian. Seentje died at only 14 years of age. She often complained of headaches and she died of meningitis. Not much else is known of her

The youngest boy Sebastian was called ‘Broertje’ meaning little brother. I know from hearsay that he was a very affectionate child whilst the other two boys were not. So, my Grandmother had a special place in her heart for him. Unfortunately Broertje was only loaned to her for a short time; on 18 December 1908 he died of pneumonia at 2 years of age. It was a very hard thing to let this much loved child go to heaven and it was told that she was often caught crying about that loss.

Times were hard, very hard. Money was not easy to come by and it was all work and no play.

At 12 years of age, my Oma, Jansje, so she was called left school and that was when her education was complete! She now started her ‘life’ education. Her first job was to work on a farm. I know little about that time except that she earned eight guilders per year (board was included). She saved this money to buy a gold chain and a gold cross for it. This cross and chain came into my possession after her death. It consisted of fine flat rings – very unusual. Part of that chain was given to our first grand-daughter, Rebecca.

How my Oma and Opa (Chris Zuiderwijk) met and married I do not know. My Opa worked in the polders (reclaimed land separated from the sea or river by a dike). Six days a week he walked a great distance to the polders. The great plan for that work was to dry out the polders to regain more land to house more people or for agriculture. Then each night he would walk home again. Sundays were rest days and for going to Church. They were Roman Catholics.

Later, Opa had saved enough to buy or rent a piece of land and grow tulips. The soil in Lisse was the right quality for that. It was sandy, blown from the dunes along the Noordzee. It must have been quite a large piece of land as all the daughters spent the August summer holidays clearing the bulbs from new growth (small bulbs) and brown ‘skin’ to have them ready for planting in the next season. It was very repetitive work; very dusty and the whole of the holidays seemed to be spent doing this work. I know that the children got paid for some of this dusty job. My Opa even created a new type of tulip by experimenting between different types (pollinating). He called his new variety ‘Electra” as it happened at the time that electricity came into use.

My Grandfather was not blessed with the gift of humour, yet my Grandmother always had a smile. She was often heard whistling or humming a little tune whilst cutting out cloth or making clothes for the children. As times were hard she opened one room situated near the footpath and used the space to sell and show wooden shoes to earn some extra money for the household. She also ran knitting classes for young children after school for a small fee. Her children (my aunts and uncles) also earned a little at an early age by taking younger children from other families back and forth to school.

There was always enough to eat, yet there were almost no luxuries. One ‘luxury’ they did have was that each Christmas every child received an orange!! Oranges were imported from Spain. My Oma made all the clothes for the children. When any food was left after dinner it was always kept for a poor person who might knock on the door at night. No waste!!

Describing her children:

Chris – (The eldest son) Very much like his father. Very serious.

Greet – (from Margarita) a very versatile lady.

Mien - (from Wilhelmina) my mother: a dedicated mother.

Arie – an artistic painter who did not seem to fit in with the rest of the family.

Jo – (The youngest daughter) Very quick on the ball.

I only have a recollection of seeing my Oma twice. We lived in Delft and she in Lisse. Once, my parents, my sister and I went by train to Leiden and from there with the blue tram on to Lisse. We stayed there for one week, but my father returned the next day to resume work.

I remember walking through the forest with my Oma; listening to the cuckoo’s call, other birds singing, the smell of the forest. Lovely!!

My Oma kept her home very clean and cosy. She also bottled lots of fruit which she kept in a cellar.

One day our Oma came to visit us in Delft. She had to walk slowly as by now she was a diabetic and had heart trouble. We took her to see our school which was near our home so that she had a picture in her mind where we lived. She was a strong person. I don’t think I ever sat on her lap. She knitted my sister and me each a blue cotton dress and I still have a postcard from her for one of my birthdays.

My Grandmother’s eyes became affected from the diabetes and my Opa would read her the newspaper – so she kept up with the news. No radio in their home yet! One day she caught a cold which made her cough a lot and when she went to bed at night it seemed to get worse. Then, one night, when the cough stopped my Opa asked her, ‘Are you alright now?’ but there was no answer. My Oma had left her physical body and slipped into the Great Light Eternal.

Bless her dear Soul.

My Father

Born 1900, eldest of a family of seven, of whom two died.

His father had a beautiful singing voice and often sang in the Roman Catholic Church in Delft, Holland and also on overseas tours. Life was hard, he being a wagon-maker. All work was done by hand, no machines.

When my father’s father died at the early age of 49, resulting from too much hard work, my father was asked to look after the family, which he did, at only 20 years old. Before this, my father had attended the Ambacht School where he learned technical drawing and he had also worked for different firms in Amsterdam, namely Spijker, the automobile firm. Yet, when his father died, as a good, true son, he returned to Delft and continued his father’s business to keep the family going.

There were three sisters and a younger brother. My father taught his young brother Freek (from Fredericus) the trade for many years. In 1925 my father married Wilhelmina Maria Zuiderwyk. They had two daughters, my sister born in 1927 and me in 1929.

Over the years my father left the parental home to start another job making coffins for a funeral company.

We shifted to another part of Delft called Wippolder and life was good, until of course the German occupation in Holland from 1940-1945.

In the long run, when our country became poorer through the war years, there was not enough timber for coffins, so he added other items. Wooden sandals, repairing furniture, creating new (antique) furniture! And so it kept our family going. He was versatile and an able craftsman. He got other contracts from big firms to make parts for machinery and always work came his way.

He died in 1970.

His particular aim in life was to do the best for his family and to always be kind and humble. Education was very important to him, which showed by giving his daughters, respectively, piano lessons and violin lessons. He was always open to support us - paying for gardening lessons, singing lessons, good clothing etc.

In one word, the Best Father one could have.

A good man in every regard.

How lucky I was!

A remarkable event

An example of how cause and effect works.

My father was 18 years young, when he was called up for military service in Holland. Even now in my 80th year, I cannot imagine my father as a soldier, who might have to kill an ‘enemy’. For, he was a fine man, with high principals, dedicated to life and making a good job at that.

Well, the night before he needed to arrive at this office for young soldiers, he had a dream about it. He was told, or advised in the dream, that he needed to take the lottery ticket right in the middle of the hat.

I forgot to mention, that not every young man went into the service, as at that time, it was like a lottery, and only a few free tickets were among the lot in the hat!

However, my father went on the bike to the office, completely forgetting about the dream.

As he arrived, some lucky boys had already picked up a free ticket and there was just one of those left in the hat.

As my father was called up to choose his ticket, he already had one in his hand, when at that moment he remembered his dream!

As he always worked with measurements in his work, he stopped, measured which ticket was right in the middle….. and, you guessed it, it was the last free ticket.

Needless to say he was overjoyed and so was the family, as he was the eldest son and worked to support his family.

Now, what has this got to do with the law of cause and effect? The dream, was guiding him to the free ticket, as he was a non-aggressive, peaceful man, and had no need to join a group of soldiers. He was not meant to go to the front, and so was helped by means of the dream, to take the free ticket.

In the bible, one often reads, that people were warned in a dream.

Reading this, when I was young, it seemed that such a thing, happened only in the time around when Christ lived.

Yet, one often now hears, that people have clear warning dreams.

Have you heard about such people?

My Dear Aunt Anna

There were several aunties I had. On my father’s side there were, Auntie Anna, Toos and Marie (Zus) and on my mother’s side Greet and Jo. The loveliest, kindest one was Auntie/Tante Anna. She was the eldest tante of the Baggerman family; a sister of my father.

When her father (my Opa) died at the age of 49 through too much hard work, all the children were left an inheritance.

Before that happened, tante Anna had a boy-friend Niek (Nicolas) who loved her very much. He was an ordinary man, which made him very special. As ordinary people are very interesting and able to develop freely and mostly think in a logical way. Unfortunately, this relationship was not to be, as auntie Anna’s mother was not in agreement that she should continue with him. Only because he was a common man! And what often happens, she might have thought, ‘Mother knows best.’ Who knows?

She met another man, who her mother did approve of and eventually married him.

There was one snag he was not Roman Catholic. Therefore she was not actually permitted to marry in the church but in a side room of the church. The groom had first to sign a paper in which he promised to bring up children born from this union to be educated in the Roman Catholic religion. And this he did.

There were 2 children from this marriage, a son and a daughter. Yet when the inheritance was spent the relationship did not become happier and even became very unhappy.

Aunt Anna was a lovely lady, sweet and caring. For quite some time she stayed with this husband till one evening travelling in a train and looking at a beautiful sunset she thought, ’For years I have not felt so happy as now looking at the beautiful sky.’ She thought about how her life had developed into a very unhappy state. Not good for the children or herself. It was at that moment that she made the decision to leave her husband and to take the children with her to get a better more humane life. It happened in approximately 1936. She had no money, yet made that move! She was able to rent living quarters and take in sewing and so the little family were able to become themselves again.

Well, and this is a true story, one day she took the tram to bring the finished sewing to the owners and what do you think? On entering the tram her old boy-friend who had loved her very much, was sitting there! No coincidence, it was meant to happen!

So, it came about that he also had married and had 2 sons, but his wife had died and he was looking after his boys and being father and mother to them and going to work. To make a long story short, these two now happy people came together and married! On their wedding photo they looked like the happiest couple on earth!

This former boy-friend, now her husband, was also Roman Catholic but because my auntie was ‘divorced’ she was again not allowed to marry in the church! Many a time she asked the priest could she take the sacraments, but it was always denied her as she had divorced her first husband. They lived in a council flat with now four teenagers. Two with a new mother and two with a new father!

It must have not been easy, yet, she as always made the best of it. Always taking in sewing to provide for food, clothing etc, for her extended family. Yet on our birthdays she would always come with a little pressie for us. When she came on such a day it lighted up our birthday.

This auntie also did help under-privileged children and formed a group where she taught them knitting, making toys etc.

One day, after a visit to her, on the way home, I asked a family member, ‘When Auntie Anna dies is she then going to hell?’ The answer came quick and stern, ‘Yes!!’

I was about 10 years old when this question was asked and I knew full well that the answer was not true! The answer never worried me, yet it showed how people can be brain-washed by believing something which they have taken for truth from a person who seems to know all about it!

This answer and many other things that happened was the reason that in 1970 I wrote a small booklet, ‘The Comparison of the original teachings of Christ and Christian religions of the 20th century’. How could it be that a loving and kind Christ would let my auntie burn in Hell for eternity? That could never be true.

She took right action to leave this first husband who did not love her or his children and was already playing around with other women, which was found out later. The second husband had a loving relationship with my auntie and that was felt when entering their home. Very special!!

Uncle Nick worked till he was 65 years old, just when his pension started. The children were grown up and going their own way.

In life it is necessary to think for ourselves and not ‘believe’ anything especially when it seems not logical or it seems just not true within ourselves.

My auntie Anna is in a very loving place now she has died to this world. What would the priest say, who might also have died in the meantime, when he meets her on the other side, and sees how beautiful her Soul shines? Or, would this priest not be where she is?

Tables turned? Who knows?

The Promise

Being born into a Roman Catholic family one would mainly mix with Catholics. The Roman Catholic school, of course, listening to Roman Catholic radio stations, Roman Catholic gym clubs etc. So, no real influence from the rest of the world reached us.

This was in Holland in approximately 1938.

Once a year the Roman Catholic Bishop would come and all the boys and girls in that region aged 12 to 13 would be confirmed. This began first by six meetings on Sundays at the Roman Catholic church after all the services had finished that day and we were given special instructions and taught the meaning to the holy sacraments. So at 12 o’clock sharp boys and girls of this age would enter this large church to be lectured about being confirmed. Girls in the left pews, boys in the right pews.

Our teacher was a priest but not from the worldly order. He was a Brother wearing a brown cloth and he also wore sandals. Our teacher was a well-built and developed Brother who had never heard the word ‘discipline’, or he was not interested to react when it was necessary to use it. The result of this was that this kind man just read us a lesson in a monotonous voice which was constantly interrupted by the boys. The Brother just got on with reading his paper and now and then just looked over his glasses to see how far he would let it go on.

They were the naughtiest boys I had ever encountered. They would laugh, fight, throw pillows at each other, maybe to impress the girls. All the girls looked on at this performance as they also could not believe that this was happening in a church! Then, as the pillows were flying through the air and kapok as well, he stopped reading and pointing to one boy would say, ‘On the grate’.

The grate was an iron work in the ground to let warm air into the church during the winter months. Very hard to have to kneel on! Then one boy came out of the pews and he knelt on the grate. It was quiet for a little while, yet not for long, and the boys were at it again!

In the long run several boys were kneeling on the grate as the performance kept going.

Personally I felt it was a shocking scene and in myself felt sad about it. This situation went on for 6 Sundays, so in reality it would have been very much better had we never attended these classes. Nothing was learned.

At last, this special day of ‘confirmation’ arrived. I wore a dress of taffeta silk and a bow of the same material in my hair and a gold chain and cross from my maternal grandmother.

We were taught when the Great Moment of our Oath should arrive we were to say, all together, ‘I’ then our name, followed by the Oath.

As I was waiting for this great moment to arrive, suddenly a thought occurred to me. It was this. ‘How can I swear an oath at my young age while I know nothing about any other religion?’ It did not seem right!

I thought about this for a little while and when the moment arrived to swear my Oath, I did not say may name. I did not swear this Oath! No one noticed of course, as it was all spoken ‘en masse’.

It never bothered me that, I had not made this promise and I never told anyone. But, later in life I understood that this was done at such an early age to keep the people from straying from the Roman Catholic Church. They had sworn the Oath for the rest of their lives.

In a court of law one can only swear an oath when of a mature age. It would bother a good believing Soul when in later life he would meet a better type of religion for him to break with the Roman Catholic Church as he had at an immature age made this promise.

Not right! As I thought when I was 13 years of age!

Naturopathy

NATURO(PATHY) is a science, used to help sick people regain their health by natural means.

LOGIC is an important factor used when practicing this science, as well as finding the cause of the dis (ease), then removing the cause after which the body starts to find its balance back and health returns.

We call all illnesses an imbalance…..Practitioners of NATUROPATHY never heal people, yet the practitioner advises the client what to do regarding the imbalance; be it diet, emotional, changes in attitude, exercise etc. After which, when followed up, nature cures that person.

90% of all illnesses are self healing, if we give the body a chance. Often, we do not give our body time to heal. For example: a cold or flu is, in our book, a signal the body gives us. It says, ‘I am having a good spring clean’. The body has its own intelligence and often tries to tell us all sorts of things. Try to listen what it sometimes desperately wants to say. When we co-operate, we let the cold or flu run its course. Rest, when you have a fever, drink plenty of home-made juices: Orange, Lemon, Carrot, Apple juices etc. Be not afraid of a fever, it is a burning-up of waste products. After the cold has naturally disappeared, one feels so much better.

There is not just one panacea for all ills. Many modalities are used in NATUROPATHY. For example:

  1. Iridology – Looking into the eye and recognising certain spots or lines which indicates where the imbalance is.

  2. Finding the cause: physical, mental or emotional.

  3. Finding the way of removing the cause, by way of counselling, changing diet, changing attitude etc.

  4. Therapeutic massage, which reveals to the trained practitioner, the condition of the body and its weak spots (acupressure).

  5. Finding a remedy, needed for each individual case; for example:

Homoeopathic Remedy

Cell Salts (12)

Herbs

Diet

Vitamins

Minerals

  1. Crystal and/or magnetic healing (using magnets).

  2. Colour healing (He is off colour) = missing out on a certain vibration.

  3. There are 70 different modalities in NATUROPATHY.

A good practitioner tries all his remedies and treatment out on him/herself first.

There are no harmful after effects from natural remedies.

Never be afraid of germs.

Eat and drink healthy wholesome foods, be positive and live a clean life.

Be your own doctor.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.

About the Feet

Small – Medium – Large

Our body can tell us a lot about ourselves. So it is with the size of our feet!

A mother came to her naturopath with her young son. He looked a happy healthy boy yet the mother was concerned about the growth of his body. ‘He does not grow a lot’ she said. She had been advised to have the boy’s feet operated on. The Naturopath looked at the boy’s feet and they were normal, yet small. It was explained to the mother that small feet indicated a small body! Medium size feet; normal height and large feet a tall body. It really makes sense.

Inquiring what the diet of her son consisted of - Breakfast – 2 Weet-bix with milk and the rest of the diet seemed normal. Weet-bix and other processed cereals are not a natural food any longer. By means of the process these foods go through they become another type of food creating an acid environment in our bodies. As a rule most of us eat too many acid forming foods. It was suggested to make millet porridge for him. This will always put on weight over a period of time.

After a few months the mother reported that her son was fine, loved his ‘porridge’ and had put on some weight.

An operation on his feet was not necessary at all.

Another mother was equally worried about her son who was not much interested in eating. Upon looking at his feet it was noticed that they were a big size even though he was young. She was advised to feed him healthy foods and fruit and nuts. As long as his eyes looked sparkling there was no need to worry. After many years her son has grown into a giant!!

When youngsters have large feet, it follows that they will be more hungry growing up. They need more good food than the other siblings. Parents need to be aware of that. On the other side, people who are blessed with small feet really are better off with a small body as with too much weight they will feel uncomfortable. Listen to what your body tries to tell you.

When an over-concerned parent fears too much for their off-spring, the child will pick up on their fears and in turn will be uncomfortable. Worry has never done anyone any good. It is a waste of time. It is different to concern where one can do something about the situation. With worry you affect the person that you are worrying about and your own energies are depleted. Instead think of ways which will help the situation.

Speaking of feet, many times people suffer from Tinea. This is a sort of fungus usually between the toes but can also be on other areas of the feet. Its cause is either from improper drying between the toes after a shower or bath or perhaps having showered where the shower-box is not cleaned regularly and where other people with Tinea have left spores of Tinea behind. This often happens when travelling or when using public baths etc where other people use the same facilities. So, the need to always dry between the toes as good as one can is essential. There are creams or powders available to overcome Tinea. The use of creams is not generally effective as when one perspires the feet will become moist and it is very important to keep the feet dry. The powder is best. In NZ a good brand would be Mycota from Boots Co. U.K. Just dry between the toes after which the powder is applied. Clean your shower-box regularly as it may also be infected by visitors who use it.

Many women who have worn pointed shoes when they were younger have in later life mis-formed toes. They admit it was rather silly to use this type of shoe as it was not comfortable to wear and now they are paying for it. Use comfortable shoes with plenty of room for the toes. Wearing high heels does not help our health as it affects the spine and often it creates other problems in later life.

Herbs

Herbs grow everywhere in the fields all over the world.

They were planned there, by the Great Beings, who created this world.

Special, real medicine, for when we are ill, not well or out of balance.

Herbalists are dedicated people, who over the centuries realised a great need to study these plants, to find out, what their capacities to heal were meant for.

These plants are there for the picking.

In 2009, we are getting familiar with some of these herbs, by means of herb teas.

Speaking to a farmer about herbs, he said, that always when the cows are being lead to another piece of land to graze they always graze first at the place where the herbs grow. They just like to eat them, and most possibly need them, as animals instinctively know what they need for themselves.

Also, good for the consumer as the digested herbs end up in the milk.

When starting a course on herbs our teacher opened the first lesson with these words, ‘Every grass is a herb.’

Interesting, yet everything which grows on our planet has a meaning and a use for us. When people populated this earth, they were not automatically provided with large factories, which made ‘medicines’ as happens nowadays.

It is not advisable to use the same herb over a long period of time.

It is better to vary them and choose different one’s now and then.

We need, in this world at this time, dedicated young people, to study Herbalism and so be able to help suffering humanity in a natural safe way.

Ever seen your cat eating grass? He/she needs it for digestion, or other reasons. Clever cat!

Their first baby

She was young and having been married for a short while, the couple decided on starting a family.

At first, she did not feel too well, but she was assured that it mostly happened to a young expecting mother.

Eventually her health returned and after some visits to the Doctor, she was advised to visit the hospital, where her baby would be born, and then book in for the birth.

Her particulars were written down and it was explained at what stage to come in for the birth.

Then came the question, if she would agree to have a vaccination for her baby, just after the birth, while she would still be in hospital. It was a vaccine to prevent Hepatitis B.

Elisabeth, as was her name, had gathered a lot of information from other young mothers, who had given birth, and in that way, she really already had expected this question.

In that way she had plenty of time to prepare herself to answer this question and make up her mind.

She reasoned to the hospital sister, that neither her parents or grand-parents had ever had hepatitis vaccinations and they all had lived to a ripe old age and they kept being healthy.

As a matter of fact, they had never been vaccinated for anything!

How would one ever get Hepatitis?

It would seem to be prevalent with people who inject themselves with drugs, using each others needles, which are not sterilised. Also from people who had been drinking alcohol in excess and developed liver damage from their lifestyle. Or, when one contacted a person, who unbeknown to oneself, had been a carrier of this virus and even by means of a sneeze or a cough, had infected another person.

What percentage of children or grown people had ever been infected with Hepatitis? That would be an important question to be answered.

But, a newborn baby is always born without a disease from inside the womb. A glorious healthy specimen!

To be given a jab, first thing when it enters our world.

No, she was an intelligent lady and had decided against this practice.

Now, the sister of the hospital, was not very happy with her individual decision, and tried for a little while to change Elisabeth’s mind, but to no avail.

So, what did the hospital sister fill in on the form for this new mother with regard to the vaccination???

Undecided

Had this sister been told to put the pressure on the expecting mother to have her baby vaccinated?

And, being not at all honest, about the mother’s decision, not wanting the vaccination, one wonders, what happened to the baby after the birth, when the newborn is taken away when it is cleaned, weighed, measured and ??? given a jab in a hurry when the mother is not looking?

One wonders.

There are now so many young children, who have had this and other vaccinations after birth and in the months following, who are now plagued having ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), hyperactivity, asthma, allergies, etc.

More people now realise that all those weaknesses have come to the fore after the vaccinations, given in early childhood. Those weaknesses could have been overcome by right food and right living.

The WHO (World Health Organisation) has many years ago already stated that:

‘No person in the world can be vaccinated against his/her own will.”

But who was aware of that statement?

Yet now you know.

Start to think for yourself and in that way Your evolution is starting to unfold!

On 26th August 2009, there was a story on my computer about a healthy baby, who had been vaccinated for Hepatitis B and died thereof later. Pictures of what that baby ‘Ian’ went through are describing its suffering and death. It now seems that many more babies have died after Hep B vaccinations.

Sleep and Consciousness and About Drugs

When one is asleep, one is not able to use consciousness.

Consciousness means: being aware, being alert; finding the best way to act.

Sleep is on a different level. We are not aware, just dreaming or experiencing nothing at all.

Many people are sound asleep, even when they are awake! They act automatically, without thought. They do not remember what their actions were.

For many people, whose life is very hard and difficult, they try to escape their existence, by means of drugs, alcohol etc. In that stage, they are happy, no responsibilities and when the substances wear off, they cannot remember their actions. To them it is one way to escape life. But what enormous damage they do:

  1. To their own body.

  2. To other people, being caused by their (car) accidents etc.

  3. To their family.

  4. To their own progress.

Hard to tell people who fall into that category. At present they don’t care, they only think of the next fix.

Children at an early age should be taught by example what drugs do to people.

Many times people are warned not to get into the habit of taking drugs, as it is dangerous. Yet, we have never been shown what actually happens to a person who takes drugs.

I will try to show you why drugs are dangerous and how they work. After understanding this, few people would ever want to take to drugs.

Different categories of drugs.

  1. Coffee, tea, sweets. These are a light form of drugs. They are not particularly good for the body when taken in excess, but they make you feel happy and relaxed for a small period of time.

  2. Drugs used in hospital. Sometimes these have to be used when people are in great pain after an accident or operation.

  3. Drugs used to get ‘high’. It is this kind of drugs we are going to talk about, but before that let me explain something else.

In daily life we live on a certain emotional level. It may be that we do not feel particularly happy, or very sad, we sort of feel just normal. To show you this level I draw a line A.

A – normally happy state – A

All normal people live on this emotional level A and can make themselves quite comfortable doing all the things they have to and like to do. Now, sometimes, something very good happens, which makes us feel very happy; we can all think of a time in the past when that state occurred to us. In this situation one would like to sing, dance, jump, laugh, or even sometimes cry (from happiness). In moments like these it feels good to be alive! The cause of this happiness can be found in the fact that either we have done something good, and this brings its results, or someone else is kind and helpful to us and so makes us happy. This happy state is shown in the following drawing at point B.

B – (very happy state)

A – normal happy state - A

When the excitement is over we return to level A again, everything is back to normal. We can always go back in our thoughts to the happy times in the past, spent at the B level; and thinking back about it will give us that same happy feeling again.

In past history many people on level A were also able to live in point B. They reached this state by doing everything they had to do in a perfect manner for a long time. Of course they had to practise for many years and not be distracted by other things, so they had to put their whole mind to whatever they wanted to do perfectly, e.g. Schweitzer, Hammersjoeld. These people were always very happy and they stayed that way because they had worked for it and they lived permanently on B level. What is important about all this is that only through their own efforts did they arrive at this happy state. No credit is given as we all are in the same position. No matter how unimportant the work we set out to do may seem, when we make a perfect job of it, it will bring great happiness.

Now let us look at people who take drugs to get ‘high’. They all live on level A, but somehow they have never thought or heard about going to level B by their own efforts. Perhaps they have little imagination, no communication, or they just do not think at all. Whatever, they want to be in a happier state than level A; they want to go there fast, and they want to have it now. If only they knew that the safe and sure way to B is by conscious, happy work, they would act differently. Well, let us see what is going to happen to them. The expression ‘something is going to happen’ is a very unsecure thing; anything could happen, generally something unpleasant and unforeseen. There is a very just law in Nature that goes as follows:-

  1. If you work for something you will achieve good.

  2. If you cheat, you always lose.

This is a law that really everyone knows about in their heart; it is a good law.

Let us follow the drug-taker – there he goes - buys an expensive drug, takes it, and off he goes to a happier state, but….. now, the unexpected happens. This is shown in the following drawing:

B (very happy state)

A - normally happy state – A

C (very sad state)

While under the influence of drugs he shoots off to level B. Because the drug ‘state’ is an artificial one, and because he cheats to get there, there is another law in Nature which makes him bounce to C. C is a very sad place compared to A, and the people who take drugs to go to B never expect to land at C; but they all do! Once at C it is very hard to come back to A; it takes a lot of suffering and struggle to climb out of point C. But when, at last, they arrive at A level you would think they would be content. Often, through pressure of ‘friends’, they take another dose of drugs, and another. Stranger still, they never quite reach point B again; always a bit lower than B, bouncing back to C. This is the sad story of a drug-taker, who sinks lower and sometimes finally dies, all through ignorance.

The good thing about all this is to know that we can get ‘high’ without drugs, looking for the good things in everyone, putting our hearts in the work set out, enjoying Nature. In that way we come to B in a very natural way and can stay there. It is true that in daily life we feel sad sometimes, going a bit lower than A, but we are able to pull ourselves out and be happy again. This is a natural way, just part of living.

Things to remember about drugs

They are an unnatural way of feeling happy for a very short time, then afterwards feeling very unhappy for a long time.

They give a shock to the body and make one feel sick.

They are harmful to the brain.

They are habit-forming.

Alcohol is a drug. When one drinks alcohol a certain amount of brain cells are destroyed, which will never be replaced. It also takes out of the body many important minerals and vitamins. It makes the heart and veins weaker. It affects the liver in such a way that one could die.

Today I got ‘high’

Lying on the grass, watching the sky.

The sky was blue

And the seagulls flew

Up and down, and round and round.

I felt like a seagull here on the ground.

The cat walked along

The birds sang their song

And all was perfect paradise.

Ever thought that our body has its own intelligence?

Our body often tells us when it is out of balance.

Listen to what it has said to you in the past.

I am tired Needing a rest

I am hungry Needing to eat

I am thirsty Needing to drink

I am cold Needing warmth

I am perspiring Needing to cool down

I am nauseous No need to eat

I am vomiting Throwing up – that which was not good for us

I am sun-burned Too much sun

I am shivering From too long in the water or needing more or warmer clothes

I have a pain Where, how often, when did it start?

I have blisters on the heel From walking too long in new shoes

I have a headache Check these out: from too much chocolate,

alcohol, disprin or aspirin, had a fall? etc

I have Tinea From not drying between the toes after a shower

I have a fever The body is capable and in the process of

fighting the virus or bacteria which have

invaded you

Tongue is white-coated: the digestive system is not working properly.

Hearing impaired: first check if you have cleaned your ears lately.

Sinus trouble: too many acid forming foods; also stop blowing your nose, instead spit the phlegm out.

Coughing: unblocking the lungs or stop smoking.

Running nose: release of an infection of the lungs or a cold.

Overweight: from the pill, over-eating or too much beer.

Tinnitus: from chocolate, caffeine, aspirin.

The list is endless and it really shows that our body often, if not always, warns us that we have not treated it wisely. In which case, we need to become a doctor to ourselves and find out what went wrong.

More than 2000 years ago, a saying could be found in Greece above the Mystery School, it said, “Man, know Thyself’.

We can still start today; to follow up this good advice.

The use of Potassium broth

Foods we eat and drinks we drink are all either acid forming once in our body, or alkaline forming.

The ideal diet consists of:

80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods.

However, when we are overstressed while eating, all our food turns into an acid!!

The message is: Do not eat, while very tired or overstressed. Wait until you have rested or are more relaxed.

Check out what sort of food you are eating. Usually we eat too many acid-forming foods, which create most of our health problems.

For instance: rheumatism, arthritis, glandular infections, coughs, colds, flu etc from smoking, alcoholic drinks, meat etc and created by the acidity of our food.

To help neutralise your acid condition make a potassium broth, as follows:

Fill a large pot with water

Add: chopped up carrot, celery, dandelion greens, onion, spring onions, potato, tomato, parsley.

Bring to boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Cool. Run through a sieve and the potassium broth is ready.

Drink this during the day (cold in summer, hot in winter) instead of: coffee, cocoa, tea with white sugar, which are all acid-forming.

Study the list of acid and alkaline foods.

Note: Sugar forms an acid in our body. Honey forms an alkaline in our body.

There is not just one panacea for all ills

The word panacea comes from a Greek Goddess of healing and the above means, that there is not just one remedy for all ills or disease. A sort of cure-all.

This advice was given over and over again during college lessons while studying to become a Naturopath. It is the task of a Naturopathic practitioner to find the cause of the problem the patient is suffering from. There could be many causes why a person seems out of balance. So, the practitioner and the patient try to find the cause together.

Many are the causes, which create ill-health.

  1. Is its origin mental?

  2. Is its origin physical? One or several of these?

  3. Is its origin spiritual?

So, it takes time to sort this out. If the patient is willing to tell the practitioner the truth, a great step towards healing can be secured. As not everyone feels like telling all his/her troubles, then it is difficult to help that person.

Homoeopathic remedies are helping mental problems, also emotional problems and physical ones. Physical problems are helped in many ways. For instance, osteopathy, herbal remedies, exercises. Spiritual causes are best helped by talking the situation over with a sincere spiritual person.

Yet having said all this and the fact that people are very complex beings where there is an imbalance in one of the above mentioned levels, i.e. a spiritual imbalance, this can affect the emotional level, also the mental level and the physical level of a person.

From all this it is clear to see, that indeed, ‘there is not just one panacea for all ills!’ Not just a pill, produced by a Big Pharmaceutical company whose creators of their products can heal a person!?! Yet people take these ‘medications’ from their doctors and as a rule they do not get cured, often needing more medications from the big Pharmaceutical companies.

Is this any wonder? It is high time that people start to take their health seriously and in their own hands.

Become aware of what your body is trying to tell you. Then think in a logical way, what to do about it.

Therapeutic massage

Osteopathy

Yoga, tai chi

Herbal remedies

Homoeopathic remedies

Exercise, the list is endless.

There are now so many different modalities available and widely advertised, that there is now a choice of what one needs to return healthy and in balance again.

A qualified Natural Health Practitioner can help to find the right way in which to go. One has to be careful that one contacts a qualified person, as nowadays, one sees advertisements in the paper for a seminar, Saturday & Sunday, teaching one of these modalities and promises a ‘certificate’ for just being taught for two days. They may hang on the wall, but have little value. Beware of that.

The Doctor or Specialist says…………..and the Naturopath explains

Twenty eight years ago I qualified in Naturopathy and have been practicing ever since.

The first weeks, when I started my practice, I realised the great responsibility which had been put on my shoulders, doing this work.

I soon found out that many people came to my practice after being unhappy about the treatment they had received from their Doctor.

Sometimes, after many years of medication, where the illness seemed hopeless, then as a last resort, they came to me.

Everything I told these people, they believed! I realised, one could tell these people anything at all. How dangerous!! Then, I knew, that anything I would tell them had to be 100% true!

Every medication, diet, therapy, I then wanted to try out on myself first, so that, I had a real knowledge and experience of what it could be like.

If I didn’t know anything they asked, I would say, ‘I don’t know,’ or if other ways of treatment were needed, I would send them on.

Over all these years I have heard, through my patients, ‘what the Doctor said.’ That, to me, was often a surprise, unbelief or horror, and I will enlarge on that later.

So, this little work is only written to help people understand themselves, the Doctors and the Naturopath.

We are all only people, not Gods, meaning, we can only all do our very best in the situation that we are in.

Doctors go to a school of learning of a certain kind. After qualifying they set up a practise and practice what they have learned at the Medical school.

Naturopaths also go through their learning with a lot of practice on each other and themselves for the purpose of ‘how it feels to be treated in that way’.

As there are different types of Doctors, so there are different types of Naturopaths. It all depends to what degree each person is motivated to help suffering humanity.

How does one find out which type we are dealing with? Simply, with rightly motivated practitioners, one will find that they are ‘open’ to new ideas, be it Doctor or Naturopath, as they really want to help their patients. Also, when they charge a reasonable price for their services and when they want any feedback, or say, ‘Keep in touch.’ Finally, when you realise that they don’t think they are God.

In Indonesia before the Second World War, it was common practice by a Chinese Doctor that he only sent you a bill when he had cured you.

That I call a real Doctor!

This booklet is not written against Doctors. There are many good Doctors and one has to shop around!

Yet, people have become aware and tired of those who prescribe ‘medicine’ out of big books, and say, ‘Let’s try this one.’ These pills have many side-effects, as we well know, and are often taken for a great length of time, creating other illnesses from the build-up of the substances they contain.

So, then the patient is not cured and has really become worse off. Often the body demands those pills after taking them for a long time and it is not easy to stop taking them.

So, we as Naturopaths often get patients who are very sick and as a last resort turn to us. How are we going to help them in their situation? Sometimes, it takes a long time to get such people back into balance.

I would like, therefore, to write about how we think about healing and the Doctor’s way. Then our readers can judge for themselves.

When dealing with any problem in life and wanting to find a solution there is only one way to do so. It is, using logic. When using logic, the answer is always right – you can count on that!

I, therefore, would like to start to explain several cases which came my way, after which the patient was cured!

Note: Never will I say, ‘I cured that person’, for we never do. We advise what can be done to help to put the body back into balance and when the patient follows up this advice, the body, which has its own intelligence, will do the work.

This is a very important point.

When we are young, our body has tremendous energies to heal itself, when given the chance. Often one does not give the body the chance to do so. We take a pill; we put ointment on the skin; we have an operation to remove the organ etc.

When young, our bodies can heal very quickly given the right treatment. When we get older, it takes longer.

The first case is about a man, approx 45 years old, who had a skin complaint and had been going to skin specialists for the last twenty years! Every time he had been given ointments to cover the affected spots. Each time it had helped the itch and red-ness for a little while, yet always returning even stronger. One specialist had said it was caused by his job, working in a motor mower repair shop. Caused by the oil! So, after many years of no progress, he sold his shop and moved to another area and opened a hardware shop. His psoriasis continued to plague him and when at last he came to my door, he was depressed about it all as well. Think for yourself; twenty years of itchy skin, scratching and it does not go away! The specialist only gives one look at his skin and prescribes another (or the same) tar ointment.

There is no future in that. How is it possible to go for twenty years to a skin specialist without getting relief? Do we put an enormous amount of trust in this person, give it over to him or her and expect a healing eventually?

Well, since we have nowadays other choices, trying different kinds of cures, we are in a better position to get relief.

When a skin complaint occurs, we never put ointment on it. We try to find out the cause first. The body, which has its own Intelligence, is trying to tell us something. It is pushing some waste products out through the skin.

Why?

Now we are going to apply our own logic.

  1. Are the normal ways of elimination blocked perhaps? How are our lungs? Do we often get coughs and colds and are they being suppressed with antibiotics or other ‘medicines’?

  2. Are we constipated? Two bowel movements a day are normal.

  3. How are our water-works? Any troubles with the kidneys or bladder?

When any of these three ways of elimination are blocked, faulty or infected, then and only then the body will start pushing the waste out through the skin.

So, covering the skin with ointment is only going to push the waste back into the body. Temporarily, this changes the picture, seemingly giving relief, yet after a little while, again the tired body starts to push it out through the skin again.

So, the logical answer to this problem is:

Clear the lungs (if affected).

Have a regular bowel movement.

Clear the waterworks.

Then, when all these channels work well again, the skin condition disappears automatically.

This seems like magic, yet it has been done many times. It is so simple, that it is hard to accept by some people. When they are desperate enough, they will give it a try.

People who suffer from psoriasis are mostly those who bottle things up inside themselves. They need to learn to either not let things go inside, or to speak up. More about this later.

How does one clear the lungs? It depends on the person. Don’t smoke, don’t work in a polluted workplace, deep-breathing, yoga, work on pressure points, use homoeopathic remedies etc

Constipation. Work on pressure points. Avoid, if possible, apples, white rice, white bread, cinnamon (all constipating). Do eat plenty of ripe fruit, salads, whole linseed. Exercise every day when having a sitting-down job. Check the waterways. Are you drinking enough water, herbal tea; more when perspiring in summer?

Is your urine clear, cloudy, strong-smelling or any other deviation? Do you have pain when passing water?

While we are clearing up one, two or all ways of elimination, the skin will clear itself slowly. Do not put any kind of ointment on in the meantime.

Use a washing soda crystals bath. A handful in a warm bath will help draw out the waste and stop the itching and help the healing. Three times per day if need be.

One can go for a little while on a raw fruit and salad diet. No citrus fruit, till all has healed. Nuts, but not peanuts, can be chewed till very fine. Seeds (sprouted) can be eaten. Yoghurt (acidophilus) is ok.

Your tongue gives the indication of what your situation is like and if you are nearing your healing stage. When on a raw diet, look at your tongue first thing in the morning. It will be coated white. It means that a lot of waste is still in your body. Clean your tongue before your first meal with a toothbrush. Check the tongue daily and when it is pink, you are in the pink!

People who suffer with psoriasis need good food and plenty of rest. Eventually their skin will be like silk and life becomes much better for them.

How long will it last?’ the patient may ask. No-one can tell any patient how long before the healing is complete. After twenty years of scratching and ointments it may take six weeks. Shorter or longer, it depends on the age, constitution and the diet.

Two things can occur when healing the body this way and I always make a point of telling people.
