Ms. Porter was standing at the classroom door. “Class it’s time to line up for the buses,” Ms. Porter stated while taking roll call. Reggie, Bobby, Jade, and Sara lined up in front of Ms. Porter. Annalisa was trying to put on her coat while awkwardly walking up to the end of the line.
Jade and Sara whispered to Reggie how they were going to sit together on the bus. Reggie was too busy trying to stay in front of Bobby to listen to the girls. Ms. Porter announced, “Group One may begin to board the bus.” Ms. Porter led Group One to the bus. Jade and Sara sat down into the first set of seats, right across from Reggie and Bobby. Annalisa was going to sit with Ms. Porter. Annalisa asked Ms. Porter, “Are we going to see the Brachiosaurus?” Ms. Porter smiled and responded, “The dinosaur exhibit contains the largest one in the world.” Annalisa exclaimed, “Wow!”
The bus arrived in front of the World Museum, directly under the “DINOSAURS!” banner. Annalisa stood up right behind Ms. Porter, anxiously waiting to see Annabelle, the Brachiosaurus, she had studied in school. “Group One let’s go!” Ms. Porter exhaled.
Group One walked through the door of the World Museum. As Ms. Porter was making certain everyone was accounted for, Ms. Hudson, the curator walked up to the group. “Welcome to World Museum, Fitzhugh Lee Elementary School students,” Ms. Hudson announced. Ms. Hudson looked to Annalisa and asked, “Ms. Porter is teaching you about the dinosaurs, correct?” Annalisa nodded her head and then stated matter-of-factly, “Yes and Annabelle is my favorite one.” Ms. Hudson responded, “And what type of dinosaur is Annabelle?” Bobby yelled out, “She’s a Brancheyesaurus.” Sara, Jade, and Reggie all giggled as Bobby frowned.
Ms. Porter responded, “Now group it is not polite to laugh at answers.” Sara, Jade, and Reggie apologized to Bobby. Ms. Hudson announced, “If Group One will follow me, we will enter into our time machine and visit the DINOSAURS!” Annalisa, Reggie, Jade, Sara and Bobby followed Ms. Hudson down the hall.
As Group One followed Ms. Hudson down this long corridor, Sara noticed a picture of Cherubs on the wall. “Annalisa what are you doing in this picture?” Sara queried. Annalisa looked at the picture and saw a little girl that looked very much like her, but responded, “That isn’t me.” Jade stammered, “But you are fat just like her with brown eyes and brown curly hair.”
Reggie, Sara, and Bobby began to laugh at Annalisa. Annalisa stared at the group, squared her chin, and looked right into each face of the children and said, “I guess because I’m fat, the artist thought I was beautiful and decided to show you just how beautiful I was!” Annalisa defiantly turned right back around and ran up to Ms. Porter. She could hear the rest of the group laughing at her. Annalisa turned away just before Ms. Porter could turn around and see her crying.
Annalisa walked towards this big capsule with the words “Time Machine” displayed in neon yellow across the doors. She tried to wipe her tears. As she was wiping her eyes, Ms. Porter bent down to ask Annalisa, “What is wrong Annalisa?” Annalisa gulped in air and explained to Ms. Porter that the rest of her group was laughing at her because she was fat. Ms. Porter handed her a tissue and gave her a hug. “It’s true you are fat Annalisa, most importantly, you are a beautiful, bright, friendly little girl,” Ms. Porter softly stated to Annalisa. Ms. Porter apologized to Annalisa for the group’s bad behavior. “Sometimes people don’t realize the things they say are mean,” Ms. Porter stated matter-of-factly. “The key is to not let it upset you, but strive in spite of it,” Ms. Porter whispered. Then Ms. Porter asked, “And besides, do you ever see any skinny dinosaurs?” Ms. Porter tried to console Annalisa. She told Annalisa, “If anyone laughs at you again, just smile and say ‘at least I know how to be nice and thank you for the compliment’.”
Annalisa smiled and thanked Ms. Porter for the words of encouragement. Annalisa joined the rest of the group. She smiled at Sara, Jade, Reggie, and Bobby. Reggie spoke up, “What are you smiling at?” Annalisa explained, “I just discovered a secret.” Sara quipped, “What secret?” “Well, if we lived with the dinosaurs, I would be the only one in this group to survive, because of my fat!” Annalisa declared. The group, shocked, looked at Annalisa and then to the dinosaurs. Annalisa began to laugh as the children realized she was special because of her fat. Reggie commented, “I guess we would be the funny looking ones to dinosaurs.” Jade stated, “I guess we would be dinner?” Annalisa corrected her, “Nope you would be too skinny to be food.” Annalisa began giggling. Bobby apologized to Annalisa for laughing at her. Then Sara, Jade, and Reggie also apologized.
“Now let’s go find Annabelle!” Annalisa exclaimed. Annalisa ran after Ms. Hudson with the rest of the group scrambling to catch up to her. As Annalisa ran past the painting of the Cherubs again, she winked at the Cherub that looked exactly like her and thanked her for being beautiful enough to inspire a work of art.
