They were all running now, as a pack.
Peter looked at the wolves running beside him. Joshua, Simon, and Lucas, all of them hirsute and beastly, all of them racing along beneath the high summer's moon. They had just taken down a deer together, but their hunger was only barely sated. All of them had blood on their glistening teeth, their haunches, matted in their hair. But the urge remained.
Joshua was the alpha, that much was clear. He was leading them on, marking the trail and his territory with his urine, urging them to follow him. They were somewhere in the woods behind Wabash now, heading outward toward the mountains. Peter didn't think he'd ever get used to being a wolf, but he had to admit there was something exhilarating about running through the forest with these newfound friends, getting lost in the primal nature of it all. The mindblowing sex they'd shared before the transformation hadn't hurt matters, either. Peter thought if they had to do that every month, he could definitely get used to it.
The transformation hadn't been bad this time around. Still weird, of course, but now when he was a wolf, there was a piece of him left. A much wilder and more base piece, but it was still there. He could control it, to an extent, all of them good. Probably still not a good idea to be changing around normal people, but out in the woods, there was no restrictions. In front of him, Joshua howled, bringing Peter out of his daze. Some instinctual part of Peter's brain realized that Joshua had tracked an elk, up ahead. Together, they moved in a pack, stalking their prey. A few more miles and the elk appeared, its antlers jutting large and triumphant from its head. It turned to the pack, confused. It had never seen creatures like this before, not in its short animal life. Next to him, Simon howled, and the rest of them followed suit. Joshua and Lucas raced ahead to confront the elk, while Peter and Simon tracked behind, cutting off its escape. Peter watched as Joshua circled the beast, drool pouring from his lips. The elk started to back away, terrified, and Joshua pounced. There was a short chase, and then they were all upon it, teeth digging into its flesh, ripping chunks from the elk in a spray of blood. So much hunger! Eating the elk was like the finest feast Peter had ever been to. Within minutes, the elk carcass was nearly stripped to the bone, the hungry predators biting and tearing what few scraps of flesh remained. They circled there for a moment, letting the food fill up their bellies, and then Joshua pointed his nose at the sky and let loose a long howl. Peter knew what this meant. The full moon would be gone soon, and they would transform back into human form. It was time to start heading back toward the college. It would be dangerous to change back into humans this deep in the forest, without the wolf's keen sense of direction. They all turned and beat a hasty trail back into the woods.
Peter was enjoying the run, enjoying the vestiges of the hunt still lingering in his nose, but he suddenly sensed something was wrong. Maybe he had picked up some strange pheromones with his keen sense of smell, but in an instant he knew something was off kilter. The others seemed to pick up on it too. Joshua slowed his pace, and the pack crawled to a halt. Simon and Lucas turned in opposite directions, sniffing the air. None of them were quite sure what to make of the disturbance. Then, without warning, the bushes crashed open and two huge black werewolves leaped out at them.
Peter was the first to see them, and he howled out a warning, but it was too late. The black werewolves were huge, and they were after them. Lucas was slowest to react, turning his head around to see the disturbance. The black werewolf on the left grabbed his muzzle with his teeth, and they battled. But Lucas was no match for the thing. Joshua and Peter ran to help, but it was all over in seconds. The black werewolf growled, and tore a huge chunk from Lucas's neck. The other black werewolf attacked Simon, grabbing his haunches, wrestling him to the ground.
The werewolf who had attacked Lucas stood over his prey, growling at us. Peter knew he had seen that creature somewhere before. Joshua swiped a paw at him, and he backed away, snarling. Lucas and his attack were rolling across the forest floor, swiping and clawing at each other. When it was over, Lucas lay on the ground in his wolf form, his neck broken. Peter and Joshua alone were no match for these two. Joshua gave the signal, and they hightailed it into the forest, running as fast as they could. The moon was already starting to wane. They transformed back into humans just as they reached the edge of the forest, emerging naked and bloody from their wolf forms. Peter turned, but there was no sign of the black werewolves. They had lost them somewhere along the way, deeper into the woods.
"They're dead!" Peter said, panting. "Those black ones...they killed Simon and Lucas."
Joshua nodded somberly, hanging his head.
