During my junior year in high school, I fell madly in love with an Armenian-American classmate by the name of Takoohi Boodakian. In Armenian, Takoohi means Queen and, believe me; she was that and a lot more. If any member of the fair sex had a face so beautiful that, as the saying goes, it could launch a thousand ships, it didn't belong to Helen of Troy but rather to Takoohi of Concord High.
Unfortunately for me, however, those big brown eyes of hers were focused on Alex Demopoulos, a Greek Adonis, who just happened to be one of the school’s super jocks. Just as I was about to despair, I learned that the object of his affection was Mimi Dwyer, a bubbly, blond cheerleader with Irish roots. One thing for sure, she didn’t feel the same way about him; for, she had eyes only for Peter Marino, a dandy, whose father owned a popular pizzeria. But "the dapper one" had his sights set upon Suzie Chang. No, it wasn't her long black hair, delicate features, or slender figure that intrigued him but rather the fact that her parents owned the Red Dragon, the biggest Chinese restaurant in the area. In the future he anticipated taking over his dad's business and adding more exotic dishes to its bland menu. Suzie, however, threw cold water on any hopes he had of a union of those two successful eateries.
She liked Gabe Keppler, the class nerd, who, in turn, was obsessed with Farah Khan, a recent arrival from Pakistan. The cause of his fascination, to Suzie's dismay, wasn't the newcomer's good looks but rather her ability to solve the 3-D mechanical puzzle, Rubik's Cube, more quickly than he. Farah, if you can believe it, had a crush on me. How did I know that, you ask? Because she sent her best friend, Sonja Johanson, girl about town, to ask my bosom buddy, Ziggy Dombrowski, the class thespian, if he thought I might be interested in going on the Junior Class Hayride with her. Although I was flattered, I, of course, chose to remain true to Takoohi. After all, hope, as people are wont to say, springs eternal.
Meanwhile Ziggy had fallen head over heels in love with Sonja. Whom she loved only heaven knows but it sure as heck wasn’t Ziggy
