Chapter One

Red was scared, far more scared than she had ever been in her entire life. It was well past midnight and she had been running for too long. She was tired and any moment her legs would give out on her as she stumbled through the mossy forest ground. The sound of the men behind her was getting louder, and if Red wanted to see it to the village, she needed to be faster than she was.

Damned tribesmen, what are they doing so close to the city of Longrun? I’ve travelled these woods a hundred times, and I’ve never even come across another person, let another a dozen or so lunatics trying to kill me. What’s changed, to alter their behavior and cause them to act so fearless?”

“Someone, get her!” one of the attackers shouted. “I’ll give ten copper pieces for first one to nab her!”

Red didn’t even know how many people were chasing her, for all she knew it could have been a band of wild tribesmen with intent of taking their turn with her. All she remembered seeing as a bunch of shadows jump from the trees and onto the road before she fled in panic. These were no band of mercenaries, she knew that much, for even they would have given up by this time.

“This bitch is getting on my last nerve!” said another tribesman with a howl to the night sky. “I’m going to break your fucking legs when I catch up to you!”

The shadows were playing tricks on Red it would seem, as the darkness danced around in the corner of her eye. Whatever this mysterious presence was, it wasn’t sided with the men chasing close behind.

Another howl broke through the night air, only this time immensely more guttural and profound than before. It was enough to startle the wildlife, and with the mighty roar went all of the birds.

Who the hell was that?” asked the first tribesman, looking around to his comrades as he tried to overtake the young woman who was now only a few yards away.

“It wasn’t me,” the man to the right of him said. “That’s for damned sure—.”

A deafening scream broke the tribesmen’s conversation as one of their men was ripped from the ground and pulled back into the darkness. The men all looked to one another with apprehension and a quickly dwindling lust for blood.

Red could hear the screaming, now plentiful in pitch and number. Whatever was attacking the men, it was tearing through them with ease. It wouldn’t be long before the tribesmen were completely decimated, and the beast had its sights set firmly on its next meal.

“It’s the wolf!” a tribesman screamed. “He’s returned for us!”

“C’mon Red, you’ve never let a boy catch you before,” Red said to herself, weaving through the trees with confidence. “Now’s not the time to start—!”

Red’s leg was caught underneath a thick root and with a twist of her ankle, she found herself careening over a log on her way to the ground. She let out a piercing cry as she hit the ground, before quickly hushing her voice to avoid detection. It was dark, and all she could do now was trust that they hadn’t spotted her.

“I know you’re there!” shouted a tribesman, slowing to a crawl as he frantically searched around in the shadows.

He was the leader, Red assumed; the one that had called out for her capture. He was all alone now, his friends and cohorts now nothing but leftovers for a monster that still wanted more.

Whether the beast could tell, Red noticed him move through the shadows. He was stalking them, waiting for the opportune time to launch his vicious attack. It could be worse, Red thought, as she clutched on tightly to her maroon cloak and tried to mask as much of her skin as she possibly could. She would much rather be monster food than live the rest of her life as the personal slave to a bunch of depraved hill people— at the very best of circumstances.

At least it would be quick this way. All I can do now is to close my eyes and wait for the end to come. At least I’ll die knowing that those damned cannibals got theirs, too. At least that would be of some satisfaction to me as I died.”

Red’s heart was racing and she was finding it difficult to keep herself from shaking violently. If it weren’t for the howling wind, the leader of the cannibals would have surely heard the sound of Red’s agony not ten yards away.

“I’ll s-slit your gut and feed off y-your entrails!” stammered the tribe leader, chopping away at air with his sword. “You’ve brought the beast down upon us… I can’t exactly forgive that, now can I—?”

The man’s voice was cut short, replaced by the sound of gurgling blood and drowned screams for help. Red opened her eyes and was shocked to see the silhouette of a large beast, standing like a man and towering at least seven feet tall. He lifted the tribesman high into the air with one hand, letting him drain of all his bodily fluids. When the beast was sufficed with his kill, he discarded the man’s body to the ground with little thought.

The beast was panting heavily, and his icy breath billowed through the air under the glistening moon overhead. The beast turned to face Red, her overwhelming pheromones screaming out to him through the darkness and filling his with desires of passion and intrigue.

Red, on the other hand, was less than willing to indulge in sinful act of bestiality. She tried to crawl away, but she was still in intense pain from her twisted leg, making for a getaway that was less than impressive.

With each elongated stride of his massive thighs, the beast approached Red with his claws drawn and fangs extended. The stink of death filled the air as the demonic hound crept closer, now dropping down to the ground on all fours.

“W-what do you want from me?” asked Red, reeling backward as the beast moved into her personal space.

He rescinded his fangs and sniffed at her with his long whiskery snout. He seemed to be looking for something while he stared over her with beady eyes; deciding over her fate. Suddenly, and without warning, the beast arched his back and howled to the moon. His roar was tremendous in power, and would have knocked Red over if she wasn’t already on the ground.

The top button on Red’s dress flew off with the hammering winds and she found her heaving bosom exposed to the beast. Not exactly the impression she wanted to send to her potential savior, but before she could cover herself, the beast turned around and dashed back towards the darkness he came from.

Red was all alone, surrounded by a dozen brutalized corpses and in more pain than she had ever felt before; but also found that she was slightly aroused and yearning for physical contact— human contact.

There was little of that to be had here, however, and now Red needed to concentrate on finding her way home. The hour was late and there could be more fearsome creatures lurking around and a second heroic savior would be hard to come by.

Chapter Two

“Come on... let’s get up,” said a man’s voice from above, prodding Red in the shoulder.

Red hugged the sheets tight and wriggled deeper into the bed. It took her a moment or two before she remembered what had happened the night before, and sure enough, Red rose sharply the moment she remembered. She hobbled out of bed with many layers of wrapping on her injured ankle, and lightly pressed against the floor as she stood upright.

“Fredrick, it was so horrible!” cried Red, extending her arms to a protective companion. “I was attacked… so many cannibals… I thought that I would never see you again. How did you manage to find me?”

Fredrick was her betrothed, a lifelong friend and lover that had always managed to keep her safe and well cared for. He was a stocky man, with short brown hair and patchy beard. While he wasn’t exactly the most handsome man, he provided his fiancé with financial security and tried to take care of her carnal needs as best he could.

“What do you mean, find you?” asked Fredrick, raising a brow in confusion. “You arrived home of your own accord, unconscious and lying at the doorstep. You had a nasty gash on your sternum, a gash that I never remember seeing before; which is odd, because it’s already completely healed… nothing but a scar remains. Do you know how that happened, Red?”

“That’s impossible,” said Red, pulling back from Fredrick’s embrace. “I-I don’t remember any of that happening.”

How is that possible? I remember the cannibals so vividly, getting close enough to smell the vile leftovers stuck in their teeth. I even remember getting saved by a mysterious beast in the shape of a man. What I didn’t remember was the blow to the sternum, nor how it had mysteriously healed. It had been the kind of night someone remembers for the rest of their life, and the memories etched into my brain wouldn’t soon be forgotten. I was trapped, and it felt like my only salvation would be to unravel the mystery of my fateful night. How could I have forgotten the most important part, that of my actual saving? I just had to know.”
