Shannon and Ally love Christmas!
“When will Santa come?” asked Shannon.
“When will Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer be here?” asked Ally.
Shannon put out some cookies and milk for Santa. Ally put out some carrots for Rudolph and all his reindeer friends.
They looked at the sparkling Christmas tree, all shiny with decorations and lights. Already there were some presents under the tree!
“Can we open one now?” asked Ally. “Just one?”
It was Christmas Eve and everybody was excited. Even their new dog, Becca, sensed the excitement. She kept jumping around and throwing her rubber chicken in the air. Ally got on her knees and pretended she was a dog. They both looked the same!

“Pet me,” said Ally. “I need a treat!”
But mommy and daddy just laughed. They knew the children loved having a new dog, a golden retriever just like their other dog they used to have. Becca looked a lot like him. It was nice to have a dog in the house again.
“You better get to bed early,” said Daddy. “Santa won’t come if you are still awake!”
So, as excited as they were, Shannon and Ally went upstairs to their bedrooms, and after daddy read Ally a book and Shannon read her own book, they fell fast asleep.
The next morning, Ally was downstairs first. She petted Becca and looked to see if the treats were gone from the fireplace mantle. They were! She ran up to tell Shannon.
“The carrots are gone!” Ally said. “The cookies and milk are gone too! Santa was here last night. Come and see!”
So Shannon and Ally raced downstairs. Becca was wagging her tail. She was happy if everyone else was happy! They let her go outside in the back yard, then let her in again in a few minutes and gave her a treat.
“Look at all the presents!” Shannon exclaimed. “Wow! Santa was really good to us!”
“Look at this big box!” Ally shouted. “Let’s open that first!”
By that time, Mommy and Daddy had come downstairs. Mommy made a pot of coffee and Daddy checked to see if Santa had eaten his cookies.
“They are all gone!” he said. “Santa must have been hungry!”
Then Shannon and Ally opened up their presents. There was even one for Becca. Everybody was happy. Grandma Kate was there and she got presents too. What a fun Christmas morning!
Daddy made pancakes and then they all piled into the car and drove to Renfrew to see Grandma Pat and Grandpa Bill. Grandma Pat was making a big Christmas dinner for everybody. They also had more presents to open and soon there were so many presents they didn’t know what to do. Mommy put the presents in bags so they wouldn’t get lost!

Shannon and Ally were so tired from opening all their presents they lay down on the floor and had a rest. Daddy lay down too. Grandma Pat just sat there and smiled. She loved having Christmas with the grandchildren!
Grandpa Bill asked who wanted to take a walk up to the cabin at the Pinnacle. Grandma Kate said she did, and so did Uncle Mike and his friend. So they got in the car and drove to the gate. It was very snowy, so they left the car there and walked along the road to the cabin. It was a winter wonderland. All the trees were covered in snow.

When they got to the cabin there was a pretty sunset over the valley. They could look down and see all the fields for miles and miles.
“It is so pretty here!” Grandma Kate said.
And everyone agreed. “This is a special place,” said Grandpa Bill.

They went inside to get warm but it was not really cold outside. Everyone was dressed for the weather in their winter coats and hats and mittens and big boots with thick socks. They wrapped a scarf around their necks too.
“We aren’t cold,” laughed Bill. “We’re from Canada!”
Grandma Kate stood beside the old wood cookstove inside the cabin. It was not on but it looked very pretty. In the fall, it was turned on for Thanksgiving when all the family and friends came up to the cabin to celebrate and share food. They had lots of turkey and mashed potatoes and turnips and pumpkin pie and apple pie.
“I’m getting hungry thinking about it!” laughed Grandma Kate.

Everyone laughed.
“Well, we better get back home,” said Bill. “Pat will be making dinner soon!“
So they walked down the snowy road to the car and drove back to the house. Shannon and Ally were busy playing with all their toys and trying on their new clothes. Pat was cooking a big chicken in the oven and getting the long table set for a wonderful Christmas dinner with the family.
Soon everything was ready and the family sat down to eat. Shannon and Ally had Christmas crackers to pull. They went Snap! Inside each one was a funny paper hat to wear!

Shannon got a yellow hat and Ally got a pink one. This was lots of fun!
Soon everybody had finished their big meal and it was time to go home. Shannon and Ally got in the car. Mommy piled all the presents in the back and they drove home to Ottawa. It was a lovely Christmas day!
The next morning, Shannon and Ally went outside to play. There was lots of snow on the ground. Shannon got the big shovel and started to push it. Ally helped too, and together they helped clean off the driveway.

“This is fun!” Ally laughed as she pushed the shovel.
Then Becca came out and jumped around in the snow. She was having fun too.
Shannon and Ally piled the snow up and made a big hill. Shannon made a tunnel through the middle of it and stuck her head through!
Ally laughed. “I want to do it too!”
But when she tried, the snow all fell down!
Winter was fun in Canada and Christmas time was even more fun.
Merry Christmas, everyone! And a Happy New Year!
