Choosing a Baby Safety Gate

Baby safety gates prevent accidents from happening to babies and small children. The baby safety gates prevent access to areas that are off limits to babies and young children. The gates range in size as far as width but the height is usually about 25-30 inches tall. This should be installed long before the baby becomes mobile in order to best prevent injuries by making sure adults are accustomed to their regular use.

There are many types of safety gates available and most are geared for different situations and needs.

Easy to Install Pressure Mounted Baby Safety Gates

Pressure mounted gates are the easiest gates to install because they are wedged between walls and don’t require tools or hardware to be installed. However these gates should never be used at the top of stairs because a child’s weight could cause the gate to topple.

Hardware Mounted Baby Safety Gates

Hardware mounted gates are attached with screws to walls and banisters. They open and shut like traditional doors and are most convenient for areas that are heavily trafficked.

Hardware Mounted Walk Through Baby Safety Gates

These gates are similar to the previous gates but a section of the gate is easily opened while the rest of the gate is stationary.

Pressure mounted walk through gates operate in much of the same way as hardware mounted walk through gates.

Using Baby Safety Gates Safely

  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions in order to ensure the gate is installed properly.

  • Test the gate’s locking mechanism to be sure it works properly.

  • Always close the safety gate even when your baby is sleeping. Developing this habit for safety reasons ensures you never forget to do it.

  • Use a mounting kit unless you are mounting the gate to a completely flat surface.

  • Install the baby safety gate before the baby is mobile in order to get into closing the gate before it is needed.

  • Consider how long the gate will need to be used and pick a gate that can last for that amount of time under constant use.

  • Remove the safety gate according to manufacturer’s instructions at the recommended age. Having a safety gate installed after a child can climb it provides opportunities for accidents.

  • Never install a pressure mounted safety gate at the top of stairs.

  • Never use older style baby safety gates or baby safety gate hand me downs.

  • Don’t climb over baby safety gates. Babies will see this behavior and imitate it.

  • Never use pet gates that have big mesh openings that can be easily climbed.

  • Baby safety gates are not substitute baby sitters. Never leave your child unattended.
