The Other Half

by Nobo13

Hello…

I don’t know you

You don’t know me

But there is a sense

That maybe we do

You’ve stumbled onto something

This world that isn’t quite what it seems

So maybe I’ll help

Fifty stories to help you return

Follow each one to the word

…Good luck my friend

Goodbye

The rockets are starting

Ready to blastoff

Leaving behind the dying Earth

Half of its people full

Half of its people empty

A sole woman cried

As she claws at the window

She leaves him behind

To wait for a lonely death

He stares into the fiery sky

Whispering

…Goodbye

Adult Today

When work became more than play

And we talked and laughed less each day

It seemed I forgotten something today

I lost it along the way

And as I think back to that day

Of the things we used to play

As an Adult may

I wished it were yesterday

Driving home

A car in a lamp lit forest chamber

Driving along lights like ember

In a starry night of December

Children two seated near

Filled with sadness but no tear

Silence with not a single word to hear

Ever drifting down the road

Onward they rode

Bound by what they owed

Hate

Mangled and disturbed

Betrayed and cursed

Boil them in the very waters

That have rotted your fragile heart

Eyes fueled by its power

Teeth excited by its taste

Hands become weapons

To smite them with your hate

And as it seethes away

You’re left without any satisfaction

Just empty hate

Knowing love

Star crossed lovers walk side by side

But neither walk in the same direction

Such is the cruelty of life

And of all those that try to love

They share with each other the pain

Of ever being alone

Of ever being afraid

So that one day

It will disappear

Losing someone

A world that’s lost its colour

A scenery that’s withered to winter

An invisible frost has settled upon your skin

That’s cold to the touch

Eyes that hold no light

Stare on helplessly

And tears no longer flow

In a desert of despair

Losing someone

You also lost your way

Left behind

We cannot return to Earth for fifty years

Until one day the ash no longer falls

Those on the rockets

Speak of the future and present

How they will survive

Yet, what of the other half?

The dying planet cries

Half of its people full

Half of its people empty

Remembered

Nowhere to be found

Yet you’re here somewhere

It’s like you’re gone off to a parallel world

It’s no joke…

I can’t see you nor hear you

But somehow I know

If I hold you in my heart

And cry out with my soul

You’ll find your way home

Remember?

Moment of truth

This is the moment of truth

When he will tell her everything

Tell her how he feels

Tell her how much she means to him

Waiting at the table

In an empty café

Waiting until he cannot wait anymore

And she never came

Unable to find her

He waits alone

It flows in the family

Where’s my textbook?

Here they are!

Argh! I forgot to do the homework!

Oh right, it’s for Tuesday!

But crap! My pencil case?

Forget it, I’ll borrow a pen

Wait, where’s my P.E. kit?

No, it’s swimming, I’ll skip

Where’s my bag?

MUM!

Oh here it is…

Where’s my textbook?

The little match girl

Cold and alone

Abandoned by all

A little match girl freezes in the cold

With nothing to her name

But three matches

She lights the first

And sets her neighbours on fire

She lights the second

And sets her parents on fire

But for the last

She saves for herself

Though…

Though you sit so close to me

You never felt my pain

Though you hold my hand

You never realised my fears

It’s like we live in parallel worlds

You never realised how alone I felt

But one day I’ll tell you

Because your heart has room for it all

Moon

Lunar scape

White as snow

A shining pearl

Keeper of the night

I find myself talking to you

You who is as cold as me

Both of us chasing the Sun

Yet never able to reach

But still we try

For you and I

We but borrow someone else’s light

A bit of fun

Hi,

Well, this is a bit of fun

You see, it’s quite hard to get these down to fifty

So it helps for, say…

Having material you can just edit

Poems you can shorten

Or just dialogue and monologues

Well, like I said

This is just a bit of fun

Losing something- simple addition

It's the soundless break

That painful snap you feel

When losing something

And in its absence

You try to fill its place with tears

Try screaming for it

Stay awake at night hoping

Losing something

It's simple addition

My cure is the best in the world

Just forget...

Just forget...

Little girl found

Trying to find her way home

But she never lost her way

Alone with her tears

Cold and alone

Soon her darkness is lifted

By a stranger from another world

Hoping no more tears would fall

As she made her way home

The little girl lost

Had finally been found

The boy with no lives

There lived a boy with no lives

He could not breathe

His friend had said

“Tell you what, I’ll give you my lives when I die”

So the boy with no lives

Waited and waited for his death

But alas!

The dim-witted ghost realised then

A corpse couldn’t give life

Rain

“This is the world of rain

And you do not belong

You journey a path of pain

But sing such a merry song?

Tell me, what do you seek?

What brings you here?

For the answers may be bleak

Speak up, I cannot hear

…Your home lies beyond this rain”

The ALPHABET!!! ARGH!!!

Aardvark with

B lymphocyte

Cytotoxin

Deerstalkers do

E-mail

Fyke nets?

Goodness gracious me

Hung

I think it’s right

Jungle of

K-mesons,

Leptons aren’t they?

Mesons I think

No,

Older

Papers say different

Queer it’s

Raven

Samurai for

Tea?

Ugh boot

Viatical settlements

Well, I’ll try

Xylographic xylophone!

Y-chromosomes

Zucchetto done!

Cat in the box

A stray in a box

That is how I found you

Cold and alone

Just like me

So we became a family

You brought me such joy

Comforted me in my pain

We grow old

And now I lay you to rest

In the same box I found you in

Fortune Teller

“Come, let me tell you your fortune

Ah, I see…

You are a shooting star

Visiting worlds not your own

Trying to find your way home

Your journey is long

But you must help those in need

Help them

Follow the stories through

And you will surely find your way”

The idea of love

I never told her

How I felt

I think it was because

More than her

I was in love

With Love itself

I think

It was the same for her

Both of us

Destined to be

With each other

But forever trapped

Within a hopeless dream

Neither finding true love

Homebound

At the start of the bus lane

A woman gets off

Scarred by her hopes and dreams

She’s come back

Hoping to restart her life

Not knowing how they will feel

About her return

And as the door opens

Tears overflow

Waiting all this time

So she could return home

The daughter of snow made whole

Somewhere in the high mountains

Lived a Man and his Wife

Who were blessed with parenthood

But only during the winter

Their daughter of snow

Their source of happiness

Until summer came along

But every year

She became more and more whole

Until she was no longer

Made of snow

The Other Half

Desert eats away cities

As ash continues to fall

A lone man shelters near

Hoping to live on

This is the other half

And for fifty years he must wait

So that one day

He can speak with her again,

Laugh with her again,

And tell her how he feels

The Story of Portal Bree

Portal Bree

15 years old and with a power

She could turn into any object

Any object that wasn’t alive

So she decided to be a chair

The only problem was…

She couldn’t change back!

The stranger from another world

Cannot help

She must wait

For a ‘Tuesday’ to come

Rainbow

“This is the world of rainbow

You’re welcomed to stay

Here your dreams all come true

And never shall there be a sad day

But I see you seek your home

And if that is true you must go

Don’t even look back once

Your home lies beyond this rainbow”

Goodbye my Gardener

Without knowing it

I became a gardener

Sowing little seeds

Within everyone

Is something so beautiful

It breaks your heart

It is a flower called 'Goodbye'

Waiting to blossom

Without knowing

I watered yours

And you watered mine

Until one day

It blossomed into full bloom

A flower called “Goodbye…”

50 seconds left

By the time Bob arrived

There was only 50 seconds

Before the bomb would go off

Covered in sweat he analyses

It’s a simple trigger mechanism

He needs to cut a wire

But which one?

Green or red?

There’s no time left!

He needs to decide!!!

Three…

Two…

One…

Green…

Man on the moon

And the stranger from another world

Came upon a man on the moon

Sadness was in his smile

And though he never spoke a word

She kept him company

They watched the Earth together

As she longed for home

So he sent her along the right path

Smiling for real

Sing me a song about life

Deep in the forest of my mind

A lone star that no longer shone

Found me among my broken dreams

Enchanted with our encounter the star spoke

"Sing me a story about life"

So I sung all my pains and joys

Until morning came

And the star was long gone

Before the blinding twilight

“Are you God?

I seek my way home

But I am lost!

Your story scares me

Please, tell me the way

I fear I will not make it…

The path I must walk is still long?

There are others left to save?

…I will try

If it leads me home…”

Waking Guardian

Deep within a labyrinth

Lies an ancient ruin

There wakes a princess

From a thousand year sleep

Trusted by the Past

To save the Future yet

Now begins her task

To turn black ash to green

For the Sun shines again

Until then

Humankind must sleep

Until then

They dream

I am Man

I am Man

A god among beasts

Yet you laugh at me

You look down on me

From your treetop homes

I ask thee

Who is it

That can destroy your forest homes?

Man or Monkey?

Who can wipe out your kind without mercy?

Man or Monkey?

I pity thee…

Purpose

Hidden inside us all

Must be a purpose

A reason for and why

Yet I cannot see

Cannot hear

What fate has in store for me

Pain

Joy

Fear

Shock

Happiness

Sadness

Despair

Hysteria

I cannot join them up

My theory is flawed

For what purpose

Was I born for?

By your side

Walking an empty street

I know you’re by my side

Lost in some world that isn’t yours

Found by someone who never was

I’m sure you have a guide

A task you must fulfill

Bound by fifty promises

In a land of despair

But know this

I’m by your side

Conversations with Mum

Watching films with Mum

Is a big no-no

She will ask the following question

(Back to back)

“Is he a ghost?”

“Is he a robot?”

“Is he an alien?”

…But I suppose I don’t mind

My conversations with Mum

Are precious to me

So really…

I don’t mind…

“NO MUM!!!”

White lies

White lies

Shining as bright as any star

Star crossed lovers walk by

With a love that never was

I’ve said so many things

That I no longer know the truth

And as morning arrives

I understand the cruel irony

That my love was nothing more

Than a white lie

The dragon of the river

The stranger from another world

Happened upon a river

Within its waters rose a dragon

Fearful at first

But the dragon rested gently near her side

Long ago,

Girls were sacrificed in its name

Until one day

The dragon fell in love

Perhaps she resembled her

As it remembered her

An ill boy with headphones

The boy had an illness

That left him in pain

But all he did was smile

And pretend to be fine

And in his sadness

He met with a stranger

Who came from another world

She told him of another him

And for the first time

The boy felt alive

Doppelganger

The stranger from another world

Met a stranger from this world

As the two reflections met

Outside of a mirror

They spoke and laughed

Envied each other’s lives

But they were truly birds of a feather

Part of the same soul

But soon they parted

Each returning to their mirror

Omega gate

The boy called ‘Karz’

Lived outside the cosmos

He was told

“Never go through the gate”

But one day he did

And arrived to a river of souls

“Ah, so this is the universe?” he spoke

And he admired the sight

And there he met her

The girl called ‘Starbringer’

Fog

“Miss…

You have settled down here

But you do not belong

This is the world of fog

A land that tricks and misguides

This is not your world

It is a convenient shadow

You must journey on

If you stay you will remain lost

Your home lies beyond this fog”

What I stepped on to get here

I realise now

You’ve waited long for me

To show you love

But I never did

Never tried to

Now I know why I’m on this journey

Why my path is so difficult

And unbearably painful

What I’ve stepped on to get here

Are the pieces of your broken heart

What I wanted to tell you

Audience to a musical

Only to see you

I waited in darkness

Until you appeared

I know I wasn’t dreaming

You were dressed in moonbeams

And stardust galore

There wasn’t a spotlight

Instead you shone

Though awake, I wasn’t sure

Whether you were a brilliant snowflake

Or a divine star

I’ve found someone who looks just like you

Lost in a world that isn’t my own

I found someone just like you

Kind and gentle

And burdened with pain

I think he has waited for me

For a very long time

Fifty stories to guide me

Send me back to my home

Traveling through worlds not my own

Again

Time travelling Sue

Lived in the past

She lived in the same day

Maybe the future was hopeless

That she lived without time

But a stranger from another world

Showed her why

She remembered about today

Today, she found true love

And so her heart- the time machine

Beats again

Naivety

We were always together

Inseparable in joy

You smiled one time with sadness

I was always unsure

It was foolish of me to think

I’d always be with you

It wasn’t until one day

You disappeared from me

And because of my naivety

I never told you how I felt

Everyday life

I’d been saved

By the same man

But in different worlds

Rain

Rainbow

Fog

And the one who gave me these stories

All so I could return home

Back to my everyday life

Just so I could

Return to you

And wonder what I could do

For them

For you

Hello

Fifty years waiting

Finally the rockets land

Is he here?

Is he still alive?

She’s old and fragile

Closing her eyes for a second

She dies

But someone wakes her

She hadn’t even left his side

She smiles and finally lets out

What she kept inside for fifty years

…Hello

I can no longer find you

Perhaps that is a good thing?

I hope you made it back

You see…

I’ve spent half a century alone

And now I found you

You weren’t the right one

Fifty stories to guide you back home

Now comes to an end…

Hello… Goodbye…

About the author

“This is actually a sequel to my first short story book- ‘Half a Century Alone.’ This book follows the theme of parallels and tells a story of someone trying to find their way home. Of the worlds she travels, there is a woman and man separated. One saved and on a rocket, while the other must die a lonely death on the dying earth. We also meet forgetful someone’s son, return to the sleeping guardian and meet parallels of the original characters from the first book.

Pick it up, it’s free as well, and like this one, it’s fifty stories told in fifty words.”

For those who are tragically obsessed, Nobo13 was born 1987 in Cambridgeshire. He spent four years doing a Physics degree but spend most of the time doodling and writing. Currently he is training to be a Science Teacher.

Nobo13’s pen name is derived from using his surname, just look above! His more unusual hobbies are collecting headphones, staring aimlessly out the window (which consumes much of his time) and messing about with musical instruments- at the moment these are ocarinas and ukuleles.
