Lay out and sew keys together

a) Set the large black triangle on your cutting mat so it is on square lines

b) Set the keys parallel to lines so they touch the diagonal edge of the triangle.

c) Beginning with the two lowest keys, flip the upper onto the lower key (right sides together), pin, and sew together (mine had about a 1” drop)

d) Repeat the process until all keys are sewn together (keep the angle of the diagonal edge of the black triangle.

Press the keys flat. Line them up with the diagonal black edge. Keep the key sides parallel with the lines on the mat.

Use a clear, lined ruler to trim pointy edges of keys (I trimmed 1 1/4” from points of keys).

Sew the two diagonal edges together. The black and white triangles are larger so you can trim them later. Adjust the angle of the large triangle, if necessary, but keep all edges straight.

Repeat the process with the white triangle and the pointy edges of the bottom of the keys.

Keep everything square. Press and square up the whole piece.

Black keys

a) Cut (1) 3 1/2” wide strip

b) Cut into (8) 3 1/2" x 5” pieces

c) Lengthwise, fold into thirds, finished width = 1 1/4” wide, press.

d) Fold the ends to the back, press.

e) Applique to the top of the white piano keys (overlap two white keys … refer to the cover photo and note the 3/2/3 pattern of the black keys)

Applique or embroidery…pattern at the end of the instructions:

You may add applique or embroidery in the large black and white corners as you choose. At the end of the pattern, I have given you a heart, a piano silhouette, and some notes.

Layer/baste the quilt, quilt it by hand or machine, and bind the quilt.

APPLIQUES

You may resize the patterns on a copy machine or scanner.

Use the half-heart to make a full heart at 6” x 6” (aprox). Print the applique pattern. Make two hearts.

Make as many notes as you want in various sizes.

Combine the two halves of the piano, approximately 4” wide.

Suggested layout.
