The Meaning of
Christmas
Snow
turns to rain as the day thaws out
And the ice on the road turns
to sleet
Some people wonder what the fuss is all about
Dreams
only come in your sleep
First of December is here again
With
the promise of snow - not rain
Our winter wonderland is nearly
here
And children will play without fear
That jolly fat
man dressed all in red
Will creep down our chimneys when we're
tucked up in bed
He'll leave dirty footprints all covered in soot
And wake us from our slumber, our sleep, our rut
Presents
will line the Christmas tree base
And all our troubles will fall
into place
Just to see a smile light up a loved one’s face
Now
that's the meaning of Christmas
On The
Buses
A
place to think and a place to eat
If you want the last stop then
a place to sleep
The journey takes three times as long
No car
driver would ever take this route
To and from work on their daily
commute
The road mounts and the traffic swells
People
getting off ring the bells
The driver’s alert but there’s
nowhere to go
The journey has stopped
All that’s missing is
snow
With nothing to do and nowhere to play
The kids on
the bus cause mayhem all day
Jumping on seats and blocking the
aisle
The parents aren’t watching
So the kids just smile
I wouldn’t expect to get an ounce of work done
Here on
the bus
It just isn’t fun.
The Blank
Page
Be
it white, blue or yellow, pink, purple or green
That has to be the
worst thing I have ever seen
A big open space but how to begin
The
start of the tale just won't slide in
The middle and end we
don't write first
A sentence that you've long since rehearsed
From
being little in your primary class
When stories were monsters no
finesse just crass
Ten lines was a story when you were that
age
Pretty soon you found you could write a whole page
The
words just came out in essays or form
For class or for homework
it's no fun at all
But now you're older and school has
gone
You forgot that normally we start at one
One little word
somewhere on that page
And before you know it you're in a writing
rage!
Knocking
on Doors
Lost in a cul-de-sac
utterly alone
Knocking on doors but there’s no one home
Our
cause is charitable but they don’t care
Unemployment and
recession are ripe in the air
Pensioners and young mums at
home all alone
Money is scarce for food let alone
Charities
and businesses who come to call
Asking for money, there’s none
at all
The job centre’s full, businesses are closing
The
credit crunch is killing us day by day
The government is
struggling to get to grips
They’ve cut taxes and called it
quits
My Baby Sleeps
I
lay awake at night
Listening to your deep breaths
Your
murmurings are answered
And your dreams move on
The bed
is warm the blanket soft
I’m scared to wake you with the
slightest cough
I’ve slept badly these past few nights
Sometimes not even putting out the lights
While you sleep
I think and edit
Doze on and off for a minute at a time
Lay
in bed, our nest, our pit
I’m so glad you’re mine
I’m
yours to keep
I love watching you Baby
While you sleep.
My Family
My
family;
They’ve stood by me through thick and thin
When
things get tough
And life gets grim
They’re from my
past, present and future
Steadily growing throughout
And
although I’ve moved away
They’re the people I can’t do
without
Recent additions to start my own home
And soon I
will make my vows well known
But my roots are far
And the
leaves of my family tree widespread
With my family I don’t
have to hide
My mistakes are not held long term
My past is
not a cause of worry
With my future arriving in a hurry
Just
to them I would like to say
Thank you for all the things you do
day to day
I love you all from the bottom of my heart
I never
want us to have to part
I Love You
More
‘I
love you’ is a well heard phrase in my house
Said on an hourly
rate when we’re together in sweet voices
When we’re wanting
cuddles or attention
Or even just to hear the response
A
strong relationship built on trust, friendship and honesty
And
love at first sight for both of us
We started dating the day we
first met
Rose tinted glasses most firmly on
A game ensues
turning to competition
I love you more the proof is in the
pudding
My heart close to busting and my condition;
Worsens
as I can’t fit anymore love in there
The last strongly
declined; no that’s not true
No me, I love you more and there’s
nothing you can do
Or say to prove me otherwise
Deadlock
ensues
The competition a fierce draw
Ended by a hug and a
kiss slow and tender
I don’t want to miss any of these
‘I
love you Baby and I will forever’
Cultural Poem
The turn of the
Millennium and the years to follow had a big effect on my family and
a big effect on Manchester too.
From New Years Eve watching the
fireworks the changes started to happen. Wrapped in my warm coat I
took the phone off Nana to say happy New Year to mum, she had some
news she said. The news was a shock; she was pregnant – having
another baby.
The feeling of
elation, of being lifted high enough to touch the stars set in. I was
going to have a baby brother or sister again! The year of the
millennium flew, we had a scorching summer and my brother was born.
Then I started my exam year at high school, the building work begun
for the stadium for the Commonwealth Games and my entire childhood
landscape changed.
Buildings sprung
up, I got my exam results and left school with a divine mixture of
happiness, sadness, and apprehension, before moving on to college I
started working with my Gran as a cleaner.
In college one History
lesson my phone rang four times gaining me a rollicking from the
lecturer. It was my boyfriend calling to tell me that the Twin Towers
had been brought down by two planes, the date? September 11th.
The following
year forgot the devastation and brought the tradition of the Games.
The streets in Manchester were filled with colours of all nations,
athletes and viewers alike. This was followed quickly by my first
ever concert – Californication the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
I was growing up.
The Wrong House
All curled up and
ready to sleep
Santa’s here flying above the street
Hoof
prints in the snow
As the sleigh comes and goes
The tracks left
behind in the sleet.
The stars in the night sky
Seem to fly
by
As a figure passing over the moon
The shadow is gone far too
soon
For the children to see through sleepy eyes.
Stockings
hung up filled
With presents and thrills
for the morning
fun
And has just begin
Christmas is the busy time
Children
running around
People home abound
Cars pulling up
outside
Smiles are difficult to hide
As Santa has left presents
at the wrong house
Wrapping Up
Morning T.V. and
cleaning up
You want a brew, but can’t find a cup
The house
is a mess
and you're not even dressed
Is that the meaning of
Christmas?
People off work are out shopping
Rushing around
to get the last present in
Wrapping up takes ages to do
And the
blokes haven’t got a clue
So gift bags are bought
instead
Christmas eve and you’re rushing about
radio
shouts out songs with some clout
rhymes and tunes from Christmas
past
The traffics busy, there’s no going fast
The shopping’s
done, time for Christmas fun
Winters Grasp
The cold bites like
a lion
Sharp and to the point
The ice freezes and fingers
chap
Turning red on the front and the back
Rain turns to
ice, sleet or snow
The roads blocked off where you want to go
The
gritter’s are working night and day
For some extra cash in this
month’s pay
People are sullen, cold or wet
Thick coats
don’t help the cold is a net
Catching you then keeping you in
its grasp
The direct debits changed and the account’s
lapsed
Hat, scarves and gloves are today’s new order
Plain,
colourful, bright or even just a border
The warmth seeps out
quietly
Leaving alone and cold, just rightly.
Our Forces
Santa flies
across
all the skies
He visits all
With the last place to call
From
families and children
To the armed forces abroad
They sacrifice
their selves
To protect the safety of the rest
In hot and
sandy places
Cam cream covers their faces
The families wait at
home
For a simple call on the telephone
The Friendship Pact
Though the weather
turns at home
Some people stay all alone
On the defense line of
the nation
Christmas a forgotten fun
A job though it is to them
all
Their families worry about the next person to fall
In a
battle so far away
Praying it won't be their loved ones
today
Remembrance is a special act
From friends who long ago
made a pact
But one of them remained, in the fields he lay
I
know we'll meet again some sunny day
When grass turns to dust
And
wings are a must
We will remember them.
Sports Personality of the Year
Swimming, cycling,
racing cars
Without some training you w0n’t get far.
The work
is hard and the day is long;
But you could cheer yourself up with
a song.
Day in day out, come rain or shine;
The real sportsmen
always make time
To practice their game
In their rise to
fame
And know their choice was right.
Interviews
Work isn’t easy to
come by these days
People are trying to find new ways
To earn
some cash a way to get by
While the people around just wonder
why
The economy's so low all of a sudden
And the governments
lending money again
Agencies are in the dumps there's no work to
go round
All the assignments have gone to ground
So it’s with
a smile and a smart suit
That I go for an interview and hope
friends root
For me, and keep your fingers crossed!
Prelude to
Christmas
My
feet are cold and my hands like ice,
The wind is chilling my body
through
To get into the warmth would be rather nice
Except for
that call from out of the blue
The town centre's packed
tight
The shoppers struggling under the weight
The colours of
their bags stand out so bright
Christmas is definitely not a time
to hate
The Christmas tree is up in the living room now
The
presents are wrapped and ready for underneath
We'll get the star
on the top somehow
And the festive season will cover our grief
Aeroplane
Planes may come and
planes may go
With passengers rushing to and throw
Its easy to
get lost in the airport building
Following a man who wares your
ring
The flight is long and the movie dull
As people lounge in
the aeroplanes hull
All looking forwards to sunnier climes
While
on holiday they'll have a good time
Some will come home sooner
than others
To mock their tan less sisters and brothers
But all
in all they'll have a good time
That won’t think about reason or
rhyme
The Waiting
Room
The
waiting room is full and grim
Full of people wanting in
The
chairs are neatly set in rows
While people seen are ready to
go
Doctors and nurses are trying their best
They've been on
their feet all day and need a rest
The beds are full, no spaces
remain
Hypochondriacs think it’s a game
With more
homeless suicides this time of year
People on the streets are
living in fear
As the temperature drops with no warm clothes
What
they pray for most is not the winter snows.
Christmas Holidays
School’s out and
winter's in
Church bells sing along with the hymn
Christmas
carols cover the streets
And Santa's elves are getting no
sleep
Christmas is drawing closer to
And Santa needs presents
for me and you
He's looked up his list and checked it twice
For
the ones who've been naughty and those who've been nice
His sleigh
has been cleaned and Rudolph's been fed
For some Christmas just
means a banging head
For those with children there's no time to
waste
As Christmas is a time of haste
The turkey's cooking
slowly and the fire's roaring hot
The sacks in the toyshops hold
more than a lot
So for a Christmas full of joy,
the sacks will
be full of toys
For Santa to bring down the chimney
Or let
himself in with a magic key
And then leave them all by your
Christmas Tree!
Christmas Party
Strobe lights
flashing orange and green
The people around are hard to be
seen
The music's blasting twice as loud
And the person with a
strike just bowed
The balls get heavier as the night goes on
And
the pins at the bottom stay up 'til dawn
The games seem to take an
age to end
And the rules are there to break and bend
The score
doesn’t matter to anyone
The party's there for a bit of fun
The
food comes next and the restaurants packed
But for those not so
hungry they were able to snack
The sun's gone down and the moon is
out
Parents are waiting outside without a doubt
That their kids
have all had a good time
And will be home before the clocks do
chime
The party over and kids all home
The staff forget what’s
wrong, not even a moan
The squadrons closed now until the New
Year
And everyone's ready for some Christmas Cheer!
Christmas Deliveries
Early starts and
Late nights
While people put the world to rights
Visiting
family up and down the Isles
Sat in the car driving for miles
The
boot is packed full of gifts
As we make our way through snow
drifts
The bags are full there’s no space left
And robbers
have missed out on a theft
The tree has no space underneath
And
the front door is adorned with a wreath
The Children’s Christmas Party
Children playing,
adults paying
The Christmas music’s blasting out
I hear
jingle bells without a doubt
Sleigh bells ring aloud
While
children flock and crowd
Santa's here and his sack if full
The
kids see past the cotton wool
Of his beard and tash
The
wrapping paper will go in the trash
The toy inside will occupy for
today
And keep the cries of 'I want' at bay
School Holiday’s and Late Nights
The school holidays
are here again
getting up for teenagers is a strain
They sleep
all day and moan all night
and argue with everyone thinking
they're right
Homework is left until the last moment
Their
attitude to school is 'get bent'
Standing on street corners is
more interesting
While the conversation turns to what Christmas
will bring
Gadgets and gizmos are the norm
And if they don't
get them they kick up a storm!
Travelling on Christmas Eve
Cat's eyes line the
roads
To dispense the fast and the slow
The roads are clear,
the streets are bare
The magic of Christmas is in the air
Children
track Santa's sleigh
As Rudolph guides him on his way
The elves
are finished for the year
And can now partake in Christmas cheer!
Christmas Day!
Christmas day is
here at last
And the pile of presents gets unwrapped fast
Santa's
filled the stockings on the bed
While siblings sleep and dream
instead
Children of the world wake with glee
When they open
their eyes and look to see
That someone special has been to
call
And on their list his tick the boxes all
Parents watch as
children snatch
At the wrapping paper where toys hatch
The
rubbish is growing tall in the corner
And mum has found a present
just for her
It been hidden, and covered well
Under the tree it
was left to dwell
What a lovely surprise to find,
That after
all this time, can read her mind
And choose for her the perfect
gift
A smile on the children’s face and no rift
For families
this is a special time
Filled with happiness, songs, smiles and
rhyme
So to one and all I'd like to say
I hope you have a
lovely Christmas Day!
