Seascape
Unfinished Poem

****

What is Love?

in the morning you lie in bed
your head on his shoulder
his cheek in your hair
wait for his first words
listen for one word
"we"

****

My words in poems.

I try, but they are like
butterflies
painted by a blinded woman
trying to
remember.

****

How Can I Become Rich?

the sound of returning geese high overhead
the April rains that call tulips from cold earth
a kitten, almost too young for love, in my warm hand.

****

Why is the Church Silent?

The gargoyled church stands empty
Beside the foot-thronged street;
The people, tired of promises
Have voted with their feet.

****

What is Wealth?

He stood under the streetlight, crying
Somewhere, someone
Walked the beaches of the world
Looking for strange seashells.
He didn't want to collect seashells
He just wanted to be able to.

****

Last Butterfly from Eden

I am the last butterfly
From Eden
Just out, as the great iron doors
Slam closed
In a shower of rust.

****

Ashes

I always fled flames
Till they caught me, now I know
I really feared ashes

****

Dragonfly

A small red dragonfly
Sunning its wings
On a willow trunk
By the river

Dozens of new shoots
From the deftly-sawed stump
Some of us need roots in a storm
Some need wings in the sunlight
If you try to have both
You must lift the world

****

Seascape

I know a poet, picked a pebble, wrote a poem
To his bicycle
I met one, dug into warm sand, said lines
About her grandfather
I am one, married you, and finding the sea
Have no words.

****

Unfinished Poem

Afternoon is an old woman
Shopping for apples
Morning is a small child
Spoiled, dropping rattles
I am a fish in currents too strong
And far from the weeds.
