One Christmas, my daughters' tooth fairies paid a special visit.

Dear Jennie & Katie,

'Tis Christmas again, with snow deep and white.

Hand-in-hand we flew for this one special flight.

Our fairy wings shivered; our fingertips tingled.

Tonight he'd arrive, Santa Claus (or Kris Kringle.)

When we got to your rooftop, what was it we saw?

That jolly old man! We just sat there in awe.

Tossing his bag to the back of his sleigh

he hopped on and yelled "Up, up and away!"

With a roar and a swoosh and his face full of glee

he was gone in an instant o'er the big walnut tree.

But off in the distance, in the dark of the night,

we could hear his small wish "… and to all a goodnight."

We looked at each other, our eyes open wide

and we sat for a moment by your chimney's north side.

Such a magical moment so few've ever seen,

we quietly pondered "What does it all mean?"

Penny spoke first, "It's all about giving …

about teaching a lesson so important for living.

A gift is given freely, and you know the best part?

A gift is one given right straight from the heart."

"That's what we are doing, isn't it Penny?

Our visit's a gift to our Katie and Jennie."

My voice cracked a bit and a tear filled one eye,

"Yes, very much," Penny said with a sigh.

"They're learning from us," I went on, speaking low,

"They're learning of love and how it can show."

"From where does it come, this wish to please others?"

"Showing love to our friends, to our sisters and brothers?"

Just as I said that, the snowflakes stopped falling,

the wind died down; we heard angels calling.

Then, for a moment, a mere second or two

The stars shone so bright, the sky cleared … and we knew.

"He puts it inside us," Penny pointed above,

down deep in our hearts so we all learn to love."

In a silent small prayer, we looked up and we waved,

to say "Thank you, dear Lord," for us all who you saved.

Love,

Mary and Penny

your Tooth Fairies
