Batter Up
An empty restaurant parking lot he thought with a smile, exactly the way he liked it. He drove his car a few buildings past the restaurant and parked out of the sight of his target. Ralph turned off the ignition, grabbed his cane, a satchel, and stepped out into the bitter cold air. The elderly man walked slowly back down the street in the direction he came.
Ralph entered the restaurant and was thankful for the blast of warm air that came from within. There was no sign, so he took it upon himself to find a seat. He selected a table near the door, as he always did because it was easier to slip out quickly.
A woman walked into the main dining room from what Ralph presumed was the kitchen. She was about twenty-five, he would say if anyone asked.
“Hello, Sir,” she said when she came closer to his table. Her hair was the white blonde type that came from too much time in the sun and her nametag said Bambi.
“Nice place you have here. What are your specials?” Ralph asked of the young woman.
“Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable for $4.95,” She paused before continuing to push a stray piece of hair out of her eyes. “We also have a hot roast beef sandwich, with fries for that same price.”
“Can I look at a menu?” Ralph asked the woman.
“Sure thing,” she passed him a menu. “I’ll give you a few minutes, sir”
“That is fine,” The hunger within his belly was bigger than what the dollar in his wallet could afford. It was not going to stop him today, anymore than it had countless other times.
“Can I bring you a drink while you are deciding?” she asked.
“If you have coke in a can, that is what I want,” Ralph dismissed the woman as he began scrutinizing the menu.
“Are you ready to order?” the server asked when she handed him can of coke and a straw.
“Sure I want a double cheeseburger medium rare, but I want 4 pieces of cheese on it.”
“Okay I will need to charge you for the extra cheese,” she said with a smile.
“Not a problem baby,” He smiled, while he turned on the southern charm.
“Would you like lettuce, tomatoes, or onions on your cheeseburger,” she asked.
