Melody and the Pier to Forever: Book One by Shawn Michel de Montaigne Melody and the Pier to Forever: Book One by Shawn Michel de Montaigne April 20, 2011 315493 words Read a sample
Author bio:
Writing has always been a part of my life, even from the time I was a young boy. There were periods, some of them stretching to several years apiece, when I didn’t write a thing. But I always returned to the art. I read lots, too. Rarely fiction, mind you, but moral philosophy, education, history, religion, politics, economics. My favorites: Erich Fromm, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Lao-tse, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Ray Billington, David C. Korten, E.F. Schumacher, Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (my all-time favorite). I read the occasional science-fiction novel (Jerry Pournelle, Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, and Frank Herbert); I picked up my first fantasy book, The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks, when I was 19 and working in a tiny gas station booth and needing something to do with the long hours. But overwhelmingly nonfiction of the variety I listed above ruled my bookshelves and my thoughts, and does to this day. If you'd like to read more about me, please go to ThePiertoForever.webs.com.

Under The Blue, The Blue Series Volume 1 by Josephine Dillon Under The Blue, The Blue Series Volume 1 by Josephine Dillon Sep. 18, 2011 196861 words Read a sample
Author bio:
Josephine Dillon was born March 9th, 1969 in Kenitra, Morocco, to parents Patricia and Eugene Godfrey. She grew up in Oceanside, one of the northern suburbs of San Diego, California, graduating from Vista High School. She later attended San Diego State University, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in nursing. She has been a registered nurse since graduating in 1995, working in the profession for the past sixteen years. As a novice writer, I wrote the first three books from The Blue Series during the years 2006 through 2009 and am currently writing the fourth and final book in the series. The story was created in the early 1980's, when I was a young teenager. These novels are my first work of fiction. Please note that all the characters and story are fictional and only a few isolated incidents paralleled my existence at the time. The Irish Setter Reuben, the high school, and the home address were all from my childhood and not fictional. I attended and graduated from Vista High School, (survived is more like it), and I lived and grew up in Oceanside. The failed attempt to drown was my experience, and I will admit to wanting desperately to be a boy when I was growing up. Along with that, I also had a very vivid imagination. My family, however, were not at all similiar to the Smiths - I had loving, caring, nonjudgemental parents who adored me. Hope you enjoy the book but most importantly for new writers like me, please write a review? Even if the book did not appeal to you, could you state why? I would really appreciate it. To those readers who braved a download of Beyond The Blue Part 1 and 2, please make sure to download the latest versions. I found a huge mistake in the sequencing of the chapters in the book and would appreciate it if my readers could download it again (it's free!) so that they can read it the way it should be read. This book was just too big to be a single work, which is why I spliced it, however in doing so, I made a mistake in the timing of the story. I hope you enjoy Beyond The Blue Part 1 and Part 2. Part 2 is for adult readers only and I've chosen to make it free because I want to write for the fun of it. If you catch grammatical errors, I apologize, but since I am my own editor, please forgive me. I am currently editing my third book, Black and Blue and it's another beast, 600 pages long. I'm editing slowly in my free time but it's tedious. If you would like me to split it up into two parts like I did the second book, then send me an email or write on my facebook page. I am also currently writing the fourth book, about 150 pages into it. Please write me reviews? I thrive on it and enjoy reading your thoughts. Or post a comment on my facebook page. This is my hobby and I will continue to allow downloads of my books for free to Smashword readers. If you want a printed copy, I am currently at Off The Book Shelf, but that will cost you because I only get a small percentage of the profit and can't set the price. I might look into Create A Space instead if it will save the reader money. We'll see what happens, til then, happy reading.
Peter Carrot-top by Yolanda Jackson Peter Carrot-top by Yolanda Jackson May 05, 2009 154321 words Read a sample
Author bio:
My name is Yolanda A. Jackson, born on April 3, 1980 in Rockford, IL. I have been writing from the age of twelve, mostly Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but my writing skills go far beyond the norm into Horror and Animation. I first discovered my talent as a writer when I complained about Robocop needing more action, but my friends loved it. They dared me to come up with a movie better than Robocop - and I did! My first book/script was Copper Kid, it was about a computer programmed robot girl who fights crime with jet-propelled wings and a computer brain. It was just great - well at least I thought so. Finally, I got them to read it and lo and behold they loved it. That was when I first knew maybe I had something. As the years passed, I grew to hate school - it was not the place for me. I began to daydream about being a big movie director and owning my own studio. Of course, it never happened and I eventually finished school, but I hated everything but English class and writing assignments, which led me to my first hand-written novel, September Monkies, that I still have to this day. No one believed in my dreams and, consequently, they were swept aside as I went through this wonderful stage called "growing up". I was a foster child my entire life - a ward of the State - and writing eased the pain of moving from one foster home to another or one group home to another. Every time I moved I tried to write a novel to help me cope with my new home, and because of this I became more involved in my writing. I began to imagine places that only exist in fantasy or animals that only inhabit one's imagination. Soon, this freed me to face reality and to know when not to face reality. While my friends were all dating and into boys, I was into creative writing, imagining fantastic creatures that don't exist or developing characters to which everyone in the world can relate. When I was seventeen, the Department of Children and Family Services let me go and I was out into the real world on my own. That's when I realized that my dreams of writing would have to take a back seat to earning a living. The bills came first, and a roof over my head was more important than what had come to seem like just a dumb dream. It hurt to let my dreams slip away, but I had no choice. It was either work three jobs to get the bills paid or live in a fantasy land where the Fairy God Mother pays the bills. It did not take me long to realize that the Fairy God Mother did not exist. All the money I had for publishing had to be used for survival, and I threw my dreams aside to play the game of life. After years of working three jobs, I got tired and decided to give my dreams one more shot. I got a better job as a Sterile Tech in a trauma hospital and began making a little more money. So, I saved and saved and finally had had enough money to self publish, which has been a wonderful learning experience. I have published my first novel in a series - Peter Carrot-top "In Search Of the 8th Key". My goal in writing is to not only improve my skills, but to get children of the world interested in reading and writing, to see the story unfolding in their minds, and to use their imaginations to dream and to dream big.
Eternal Eden by Nicole Williams Eternal Eden by Nicole Williams March 31, 2011 139885 words Read a sample
Author bio:
Hearing you had a higher likelihood of being attacked by a komodo dragon (*slight* exaggeration) than making it as a writer, Nicole Williams decided to major in Economics at Whitworth University where she went on to have a "respectable" career in the land of the super-starched white collars. Fast forward to marriage, a baby, and the scintillating life of a stay-at-home-mom, she dusted off her laptop one summer night and churned out a 500 page first draft in eight weeks. The result was a messy house--to put it generously--dinners that were either delivered or microwaved, and Eternal Eden. A twenty-five year work in progress since her "debut" novel about a circus at the age of three (dictated to her dad who was forward-thinking enough to see a writer-in-the-making), Nicole has finally fulfilled a lifelong goal of publishing a novel, although she's left behind tales of the red and white striped big-top for the juicy, page-turning drama of the YA genre. In between date nights, play dates, story hours, and attempting (and regularly failing) to channel her inner June Cleaver, she spends her free time writing into the wee hours of the night and *trying* to live by the motto, you miss all the shots you don't take. Nicole loves hearing from her readers. You can contact her at nwilliamsbooks@gmail.com.

Author bio:
Dean started reading seriously in the second grade due to a competition and has spent most of the subsequent three decades lost in other people's worlds. After reading several local libraries more or less dry of sci-fi and fantasy, he started spending more time wandering around worlds of his own creation to avoid the boredom of the 'real' world. Things worsened, or improved depending on your point of view, when he first started experimenting with writing while finishing up his accounting degree. These days Dean has a wonderful wife and daughter to keep him rather more grounded, but the idea of bringing others along with him as he meets interesting new people in universes nobody else has ever seen tends to drag him back to his computer on a fairly regular basis.

Hi, I’m Nick Taylor, I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, possibly the greatest place on earth. I went to Dakota Ridge High and was in band— that’s right I was a band nerd and no, I don’t have any cool “one time at band camp” stories, so don’t ask. I started writing in October of 2007. I was driving around with a friend and said “hey, I wonder if I can write a book.” So I thought I’d try and write outline and see what happens. Well, I finished the outline and I couldn’t just stop there. I needed to write chapter one and then that would be it. Do you see where this is going? Anyway, after chapter one was done, I had to finish the first book. But I wanted to get input as I went in order to write a better story. I decided to do a podcast of the first three chapters to see what people thought. After the first podcast, I decided that I wanted to continue to do it and more over, I wanted to get a larger listener base. It's all been a wonderful journey from there.

Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she’d never been, introduce her to people she’s never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.

Low cost + coffee = success for a perpetual student like J. Leigh, who may have heard of the concept of a full-time job but likes to avoid that topic as much as possible. When she isn’t writing, J. Leigh enjoys fencing, listening to music of a variety of genres, costuming, and inventing languages for her worlds. That last bit is a secret, so don’t tell. She may even put up some information on her blog about her different languages at some time, if she can be persuaded to. Besides work, J. Leigh also doesn’t believe in ages. So don’t ask her how old she is. She is either eighteen or eighty-five, or somewhere in the middle.

When I was about 12, one of my plane friends (I am talking about you Mindy) and I put pen to paper and created our very first story. Unfortunately, we buried it in a time capsule that I have never been able to find again:( But I loved creating and going to places that I hadn't gotten to experience in my small town. This is what also attracted to me to my life long passion for reading.

William Forde was born in Ireland and currently lives in Haworth, West Yorkshire, England. He is the father of five children and the author of 28 published books and a musical play. He is unique in the field of contemporary children's authors through the challenging emotional issues and story themes he addresses, preferring to focus upon those emotions that children find most difficult to appropriately express. One of West Yorkshire's most popular children's authors, his books have been publicly read in over 2,000 Yorkshire school assemblies by over 800 famous names and celebrities from the realms of Royalty, Film, Stage, Screen, Politics, Church, Sport, etc. The late Princess Diana used to read his earlier books to her then young children, William and Harry and Nelson Mandela once telephoned him to praise an African story book he had written. Others who have supported his works have included three Princesses, three Prime Ministers, two Presidents and numerous Bishops of the realm.A former Chief Inspector of Schools for OFSTED described his writing to the press as 'High quality literature.' Forever at the forefront of change, at the age of 18 years, William became the youngest Youth Leader and Trade Union Shop Steward in Great Britain. In 1971, he founded Anger Management in Great Britain and freely gave his courses to the world. Within the next two years, Anger Management courses had mushroomed across the English-speaking world. During the mid-70's, he introduced Relaxation Training into H.M. Prisons and between 1970 and 1995, he worked in West Yorkshire as a Probation Officer specialising in Relaxation Training, Anger Management, Stress Management and Assertive Training Group Work. He retired early on the grounds of ill health in 1995 to further his writing career, which witnessed him working with the Minister of Youth and Culture in Jamaica to establish a trans-Atlantic pen-pal project between 30 primary schools in Falmouth, Jamaica and 30 primary schools in Yorkshire. William was awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honours List of 1995 for his services to West Yorkshire. He has never sought to materially profit from the publication of his books and has allowed all profit from their sales (approx £200,000) to be given to charity.

Author bio:
I was born in West Sussex, England in 1963 and began to show an interest in story telling at the age of 10 when I filled an exercise book with a single story. In the early 1990’s I began to write poetry, that’s what I called it, and wrote around 100-150 poems over the next two years. One poem gave me the idea for a story which became my first novel ‘The Rising’ a horror story. From then on I just kept writing: 3 Phaze – sci-fi, Lagoon – X-files style, King of Kings which became Emun of Mor was short fantasy in the style of the King James Bible, The Boy From Nowhere – sci-fi. Mark – unfinished Emun of Mor Lo the Prophet The Cord – current title. I tried many times to find a publisher but had no idea what I was doing. So as the internet grew I self published the first three on lulu.com, later on Smashwords.com where they are free. As luck would have it I found Vamplit Publishing, an indie publisher that was looking for new work so I sent them a link to my website where they could get a sample and forgot all about it until the request came through for the rest of the book. A year later I was looking at the cover art and being told that the ebook would out soon.
