I must in all honesty, update this entry, for I stumbled onto the magic key to post a story on Smashwords. It was operator error not one of the poltergeist that I’m sure came preloaded in my computer that prevents me from getting what I want from it. For those of you who didn’t read this bio before—which I’m sure includes the rest of the world’s population—I repeat: I am an old man who loves to write. I started decades ago—the exact number is irrelevant—on a cast iron framed manual typewriter that would now serve little purpose beyond a boat anchor. I love composing fiction on the computer, mainly because of the spell check feature. Why someone who can’t spell worth a damn wants to write, I’ll never be able to explain. I take solace in the knowledge that some well-known writers throughout history were so afflicted. However, I must confess, that is about as far as I can go into this—to me—frightening world of cyberspace. I don’t have accounts on face book (wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole. Almost nightly the news is filled with stories of people murdered by people they have contacted there.) I feel the same way about Myspace, a blog or personal web site. I don’t tweet or twit or what ever that is. That really seems silly--just call them and talk! So I’ll be contented to write and enjoy retirement until the final heartbeat or wayward city buss runs me over.

I have three sons with beautiful voices, intelligent minds, and a lovely sense of humor. And I am the author of 12 print and digital books, novelist, essayist, satirist, and humorist. I am not sure to what extent I deserve credit for either of the above; I was just doing what came naturally to me: fathering babies and writing books. My first novel, "The Revised Kama Sutra," received rave reviews and was called "very funny" by Kurt Vonnegut, and "an Indian Portnoy educated by Catholic nuns" by The Independent of London. It was published in ten countries and in seven languages. It got me into a list of ten South Indian writers mentioned by "The Lonely Planet Guide to South India"--nearly all the rest are either millionaires or dead. Recently, though, it’s been harder to write and to survive, especially as I struggle with a Valium addiction (which I write about in the book, “The Terrorist in My Life”). Despite my numerous failings, I am truly sincere and passionate about writing, about writing with integrity (to the extent that survival permits), and about publishing ten books that are either in progress, or potentially contained within nearly 5,000 pages of unprocessed writings. Though now an American citizen, I think of myself as a citizen of the planet, a humanist, as a lover of peace, fellowship, and of a world without borders. I enjoy music, books, comedy, philosophy, and political satire; what I miss most about the United States is our great library system, the book superstores, The Daily Show, the Colbert Report, and Garrison Keillor’s radio show, News from Lake Woebegone. I hope for a breakthrough that will allow me to restart life in America.

I was born in Belfast,Northern Ireland on the 15th January 1939 the last of six children. My mother died on Boxing day the same year and the world was at war again. The job of looking after me fell to Lily, my eldest sister. In 1942 she married a British sailor and took me with her to live in Scotland and later England. The complication with me having a different surname name to Lily caused problems with the issue of ration books etc. In March 1943 I was adopted and my name changed to Cook. I remained with Lily and her husband in a mostly unhappy situation until 1950 when I returned home to Ireland and regained my own identity as Rodgers. The years away from Belfast and family left me as a stranger in my own home. In 1954 I began the process to join the Royal Navy, and on the 14th March 1955 march off to HMS Ganges. HMS Ganges was a boys training camp near Ipswich, probably the toughest naval training camp in England. (I refer to my books for a complete history of my early and tumultuous life). Today you will find me living with my wife of forty years on our 15 acre hobby farm in Prince Edward Island. We are both retired and share our time with our two dogs and two cats. We have two grown daughters and two wonderful grandchildren. Forgive me if this sounds like a sales pitch, but if you decide to read my books I recommend you begin with 'Lily & Me' then follow with 'The Royal Navy & Me' as it is the sequel.
