The Son of Man | by CW Johnson Feb. 08, 2009 | 136409 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: In the year 1997 I was a traveling musician. 1997 was the year my travels took me to an ancient town in Germany called Rothenberg… more specifically, the Cathedral of the Holy Blood Altar. It was there I witnessed with my own eyes a very interesting relic; a capsule said to contain three drops of Christ’s blood. This immediately piqued my imagination. What would happen if they actually found DNA within the capsule and cross-matched it with tissue found on the Shroud of Turin? What if it matched? This little flight of fantasy was the beginning of a journey that took me through dozens of false starts, years of writing and eventually through the never-ending editing process. The tale that emerged was as much a surprise to me as to anyone. It was very much like a story breaking free and escaping from my computer. I sincerely hope that you will find my novel entertaining and that you will continue the journey on through the next two books in the series. CW Johnson |

BASIC SKINCARE MANUAL | by Carolyn E. Johnson Feb. 17, 2009 | 1844 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Through a series of events, I found myself in beauty school in 2001, at the age of 53. I hadn’t been in a setting that required homework or memorization for a number of years. The other students were either close to my own situation or were young women who had chosen beauty school instead of college primarily because they struggled in high school. I developed little rhymes to help me learn the material at that time and thought about developing games and aids to ease the learning for others at a later time...when I was established in the field. Now, several years later, this series of booklets are the result of my initial idea. My dearest wish is that these study guides will help many more women achieve their dream and earn their cosmetologist license in esthetics. |

Road To Freedom | by Sylvia Hubbard Feb. 26, 2009 | 102723 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Detroit native, Sylvia Hubbard, a single mother of three, has worked tirelessly to promote and encourage emerging writers in Michigan. She independently published her first romance novel in 2000 and has continued to write in that genre, sometimes venturing into other sub-genres. Always urban and contemporary styled, her writing is enjoyed all over the world. She has published 4 paperbacks and over 10 e-books. The same year she published, Ms Hubbard also created Motown Writers Network to fill the lack of education and networking for Michigan authors online and offline. By 2004, she was frustrated that all the literary conferences had moved too far away from the city and co-created The Essence of Motown Literary Jam Conference held only in the City of Detroit annually. In addition to romance writing, Hubbard has been featured at various conferences and workshops all over the United States and Canada, where she has taught authors how to sell their books on the Internet. She also published Internet Marketing for Writers & Businesses as a resource for those unable to attend her workshops. In the upcoming year, she will be featured in several anthologies and plans to publish additional e-books. |

Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I | by Tracy Falbe Feb. 27, 2009 | 180907 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I have been hooked on fantasy and science fiction since preschool when I watched Star Trek the Original Series with my family on TV. Then came Star Wars at the theater when I was 5, and a few years later, I discovered the joys of reading fantasy with the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. I quickly moved up to stronger stuff like Conan, and I currently like The Song of Ice and Fire. The elements I like most about the genres are the high stakes (save the world, overthrow the empire, etc.), the diversity of characters, and how magic or extraordinary technology allows plots to expand in interesting ways. The ability of fantasy and sci fi to include analysis and criticisms of social conditions like religion and politics is especially fascinating as well. When this is done in conventional humdrum fiction, people and readers descend into arguments about whether an opinion is valid or the historical information is accurate instead of assessing the concepts themselves. These interfering issues are not present in the purely metaphorical works that occur sometimes in fantasy and science fiction. Of course, fantasy and sci fi can just be fun as well. I love a good hero or heroine and villains can be the best of all. And there is something therapeutic about picking up a sword or blaster and solving the problems of the world. My taste in genre has inevitably married itself to my love of writing. For some reason I am a person capable of writing novels. The act of creating thousands of pages of fiction does not overwhelm me. Making it a good work of fiction is the hard part that requires countless hours of editing and rewriting and lots of daydreaming too. I have written a four-novel epic fantasy series entitled The Rys Chronicles. The individual novels of the series are: Union of Renegades, The Goddess Queen, Judgment Rising, and The Borderlands of Power. I produce my novels in paperback and ebooks, and readers all over the world have been kind enough to allow me to entertain them. Currently I am in the midst of writing another fantasy series. I expect this one to be 4 novels as well, and, as of February 2009, I am closing in on completing Book II. This series is still untitled and I won't be publishing it until it is complete. This process allows me to fine tune everything throughout the novels. When I'm not writing, my other passions include cooking, growing food, reducing my consumption of fossil fuels, and reading. |

Bastards of Old | by Gregory D. Welch March 02, 2009 | 0 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I'm in a writing mood today... But that's nothing new. Hello, and welcome. Pull up a chair, lean back, relax. Want a green tea? They're my favorite... So, you want to know about me? I was born in the Summer of '84. Was raised in small town, Kentucky---its grown up since then, they're at around 25,000 now. Watch out! I've always had a vivid imagination. My folks sometimes say it's because I grew up away from my older sister, and was mostly alone as a child. Not abandoned alone, but void of other children most of the time. So, I compensated by creating massive adventures in the back yard. I explained why there were twelve different "Batman" action figures in various suits, creating my own league of "Batmen" each with their own backgrounds, abilities and so on.... But that's not why you came here, now is it? No... You want to know when it happened---when I started to write. That my friend started when it started. What I mean is, as soon as I learned something was possible, I did it. I could probably pin a year on it, back to maybe First or second grade. Maybe even earlier, but I won't confirm the old wives tale of us writers having a huge ego. Not yet. I can say I first discovered great stories before I ever started School. Was my mother's fault, and I'm eternally grateful for it. I'll never forget that first reading of H.G. Wells's "The Time Machine." Science Fiction was a thing I enjoyed thoroughly for a stretch. The machines, the possibilities, and the insane explanations. Very enjoyable. But I grew, and my tastes changed. I wrote different things and different times. I even put it off altogether once because of a harsh criticism from a Seventh grade Teacher... I became an active leader in the Church I was attending and during that time Discovered one Mister Frank Peretti. He is a Christian Author with a decent understanding of horror---Supernatural Horror. Long Story Short as they say, I resigned from my positions in Church for my own reasons and not long afterward rediscovered Stephen King. King holds a special place in my dark heart. His works inspire me sure, and challenge the hell out of me. If he can do it, why can't I? Then came others... Clive Barker haunted my deepest soul with his "Hellbound Heart." A tattered old copy I found in a Peddler's mall. I love and adore this book nearly as much as I am terrified of it. Again I saw a challenge, a thing to aspire for. If he could do it, why not I? I write and I write and I write. There is no end, not to passion, not to something written upon the heart---even if it might be shadowed heart. The words come, and they go, but never too far away. I've never felt more alive than when in front of my 'puter banging away like a madman to the vicious songs in my word weaving imagination. I have yet to be officially discovered. But who I am to let that stop me? How's that Green Tea treatin' ya? Need another one? Tell ya what, grab that tea and let's take a trip. Just you, me, and a few good tales... |

Sentence of Marriage | by Shayne Parkinson March 08, 2009 | 150570 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I write historical fiction set in New Zealand, starting in the 1880s. My fifth novel takes the series to 1918. I'm fascinated by social history, particularly that of my own country. I live in a state of barely-controlled chaos; fortunately I share my life with an invariably calm and endlessly optimistic husband. I divide my time between an apartment in the city, in reach of good espresso, and a few acres in the country, where the rank grass in the orchard is kept under control by a small mob of sheep (and where we have our own espresso machine). When I'm not writing, reading, or engaged in mundane activities, I play the piano rather badly. |

(NOTE: underscore between the ‘r’ and the ‘M’) He likes getting mail and does his best to answer. Of his biography, Dr. Mabeuse says: “Everyone connects to the world in some way, and I seem to connect through sex. I’m drawn to the extreme and the extraordinary in all things, and I like to explore the farther edges of passion and desire in what I write. What interests me now is not so much the things people do, but how they feel about what they do—male and female dynamics, how we connect to ourselves and each other and to the world at large. I tend to be intense and my writing shows that, but I really value my sense of humor above all, and I expect it to sustain me should the fires of sexual passion ever burn out.†|

Conrad's First Girl | by Varian Krylov March 08, 2009 | 11617 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Since her girlhood in a sunny coastal town in California, Varian Krylov has nurtured a love of words and a curiosity about the deep, dark forces at work in human nature, especially sexuality, and how they often paradoxically twine with our tenderest impulses. Her stories tend to explore the sometimes fine line between what arouses, and what frightens, what we’re driven to, and what we’re ashamed of. |
