The Djinn Garden | by Stephen Goldin June 06, 2009 | 27055 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: STEPHEN GOLDIN was born in 1947 in the city of Philadelphia. When he was 13, his parents moved to California and, upon reflection, he decided to accompany them. It was a lucky thing he did, too; otherwise, when he went to college, the commute to UCLA would have been quite difficult. He eventually graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in Astronomy. His first job out of college was as a civilian space scientist for the U.S. Navy. The urge to write was strong, though, and after several years he left to try writing full time. He only regretted the move every other Thursday, when he would have gotten paid. After several years of genteel poverty, he took a job as writer/editor for a pornographic humor paper, the San Francisco Ball. In retrospect, this was a great crucible; because of deadline pressure, he had to learn to make his writing dirty, funny, and one draft. At about this time, too, he began selling novels on a regular basis. While he has, from time to time, held down other full-time employment (he helped design the Star Trek: The Next Generation computer game "A Final Unity" for Spectrum HoloByte and has also written manuals and game design documents for Maxis), his real love is fiction writing and he continues to pursue it. His first wife was fellow author Kathleen Sky. Their medieval-style wedding was a Saturday morning program item at the 1972 World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles. In the 10+ years of their marriage, in addition to their individual works, they collaborated on a pair of stories ("Painting the Roses Red" and "The Devil Behind the Leaves") about the diMedicis, a family of interstellar swindlers. Mr. Goldin's current wife is fellow author Mary Mason. Their wedding took place the night before EclectiCon 1 in Sacramento, at which Mr. Goldin was the Guest of Honor. They currently live in the San Francisco East Bay area. So far they have co-authored two books in the Rehumanization of Jade Darcy series: Jade Darcy and the Affair of Honor and Jade Darcy and the Zen Pirates. More books in this series are planned. Mr. Goldin served the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for three years as editor of the SFWA Bulletin and another three years as SFWA's Western Regional Director. |

| Author bio: Andy Love was born and raised in Scotland. Now in his late 40's, he lives with his wife and two cats. He also has a son, daughter and four grandchildren. Andy states “I have always loved writing from a very young age, but the educational system didn’t encourage this as a proper job. After constantly being chastised and pulled away from writing, I gave up until after I left the educational production machine. Andy draws his inspiration from a sordid, brutal and horrific Scottish history, where there is an abundance of fables, folklores, murders and superstitions. Andy’s passion for writing has grown over the years and he is excited about the release of Short Shocks II, coming very soon. League of Extraordinary Robots | by Yolanda Jackson June 10, 2009 | 69002 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: My name is Yolanda A. Jackson, born on April 3, 1980 in Rockford, IL. I have been writing from the age of twelve, mostly Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but my writing skills go far beyond the norm into Horror and Animation. I first discovered my talent as a writer when I complained about Robocop needing more action, but my friends loved it. They dared me to come up with a movie better than Robocop - and I did! My first book/script was Copper Kid, it was about a computer programmed robot girl who fights crime with jet-propelled wings and a computer brain. It was just great - well at least I thought so. Finally, I got them to read it and lo and behold they loved it. That was when I first knew maybe I had something. As the years passed, I grew to hate school - it was not the place for me. I began to daydream about being a big movie director and owning my own studio. Of course, it never happened and I eventually finished school, but I hated everything but English class and writing assignments, which led me to my first hand-written novel, September Monkies, that I still have to this day. No one believed in my dreams and, consequently, they were swept aside as I went through this wonderful stage called "growing up". I was a foster child my entire life - a ward of the State - and writing eased the pain of moving from one foster home to another or one group home to another. Every time I moved I tried to write a novel to help me cope with my new home, and because of this I became more involved in my writing. I began to imagine places that only exist in fantasy or animals that only inhabit one's imagination. Soon, this freed me to face reality and to know when not to face reality. While my friends were all dating and into boys, I was into creative writing, imagining fantastic creatures that don't exist or developing characters to which everyone in the world can relate. When I was seventeen, the Department of Children and Family Services let me go and I was out into the real world on my own. That's when I realized that my dreams of writing would have to take a back seat to earning a living. The bills came first, and a roof over my head was more important than what had come to seem like just a dumb dream. It hurt to let my dreams slip away, but I had no choice. It was either work three jobs to get the bills paid or live in a fantasy land where the Fairy God Mother pays the bills. It did not take me long to realize that the Fairy God Mother did not exist. All the money I had for publishing had to be used for survival, and I threw my dreams aside to play the game of life. After years of working three jobs, I got tired and decided to give my dreams one more shot. I got a better job as a Sterile Tech in a trauma hospital and began making a little more money. So, I saved and saved and finally had had enough money to self publish, which has been a wonderful learning experience. I have published my first novel in a series - Peter Carrot-top "In Search Of the 8th Key". My goal in writing is to not only improve my skills, but to get children of the world interested in reading and writing, to see the story unfolding in their minds, and to use their imaginations to dream and to dream big. |

Shorts Stories | by Dan Schwartz June 26, 2009 | 1432 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I love a good story, and I love a good joke. These two factors are my biggest influences. My writing is story telling interconnected through jokes. My debut book No Cure for Nature is a comical environmental adventure which explores the personification of Mother Nature rebelling against humankind in a whirlwind of puns, wordplay and heroism. My background is in Environmental Engineering which is where my strong fascination with environmental issues comes from. I am still unaware where my love for puns was born, and story telling most likely stems back to Sesame Street. |

Jonathan's First Wedding | by Sandy Nygaard June 26, 2009 | 2807 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Sandy Nygaard is a part-time CPA, a part-time writer, and a full time mom. Possessing little patience for either the tax code or parenting guidebooks, she keeps a tenuous grip on her sanity by writing. Her short stories and humorous essays focus on the quirks of small town life and have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers. She’s a native of the Pacific Northwest, acquiring the bulk of her small town experience in Dallas, Oregon, supplemented by a stint in Omak, Washington. Sandy has a BS from Oregon State University in Microbiology, which is mostly useless in either of her professions. She’s been a Camp Fire Girl, a 4-H member, a Job’s Daughter, an athlete (track) a church treasurer, and a PTA fundraiser, all of which provide immense fodder for her writing. She currently lives with her husband and two kids in the suburban wastelands east of Seattle. |

I'm biased, but I think it will be as exciting as the first book. I work as a technical manager for web projects, and write in bursts when I get some time. Thanks for your feedback, and happy to hear from readers. You can also contact me via the jetty journals website. |
