Author bio:
I'm a writer, journalist, filmmaker, event producer and counterculture and cannabis activist. I was the first journalist to travel to the South Bronx and document the origins of hip hop. In 1987, I was hired as editor of High Times magazine. I created the Cannabis Cup, a cannabis awards ceremony held every Thanksgiving in Amsterdam, and The Freedom Fighters, the first hemp legalization group. I also created a garage-rock revival band called the Soul Assassins. In 2002 I directed the video shoot that was later released as Live in Amsterdam (Fishbone album). In 2004, I wrote most of the narration for a/k/a Tommy Chong and also appear in the film. My most recent hardback book, The Octopus Conspiracy and Other Vignettes of the Counterculture, was published by Trine Day. Most of my eBooks are available exclusively through smashwords. I also regularly appear at college campuses, sometimes solo, but usually as part of a debate on the legalization of cannabis, alongside former New York City D.E.A. chief Robert Stutman. The event, known as "Heads versus Feds," began in 2001 and has visited more than 200 colleges in ten years, regularly drawing standing-room crowds. Bob and I are known as "The Ultimate Odd Couple," and have become close friends despite the cultural gap between us. The debate is booked by Wolfman Productions in Connecticut.

Author bio:
I'm "middle-aged", married once, have nine children and a growing number of grandchildren, and I'm retired. I have plenty of time for writing and researching. Perversely, I have little ambition to do so. The books I have written seem to have satisfied my urge to explore and express in this medium. "I know practically nothing about almost everything." That's a mantra that keeps me from getting too full of myself. The test of a good book is when the author can return to it after many years and find it satisfying. Because we mature in our thinking as we age, it usually happens that a return to earlier literary creations shows up how ignorant we were. If a book we wrote back then stands up to the passing of time, we must have done something right. I must have succeeded in retaining the good stuff and disposing of the bad; because, despite the inevitable flaws that I see now and could not see then, my books and short stories from the swiftly receding past entertain me today. I put up most of what I think I know on the subject of the Norman Conquest at my Website, see link below....

My first novel, January’s Paradigm, was published by Minerva Press, London, England. Current Entertainment Monthly in Ann Arbor, Michigan, wrote of January’s Paradigm, “(readers) will not be able to put it down.” I have another novel based on the Joe January character, January’s Penitence, being considered for publication. In 2008 I completed Backstop: A Baseball Love Story in Nine Innings, which is now available from Second Wind Publishing. After completing a futuristic piece, Chaotic Theory, a novella that explores the conjecture of how the flap of a butterfly’s wings in South America might result in a tornado in Texas, I commenced my next major project, a murder mystery that spans two centuries written around baseball legend, Ty Cobb. My fiction and essays appear in various online and print publications, including Cezanne’s Carrot, Saucy Vox, River Walk Journal, 63 Channels, The Writers Post Journal, Redbridge Review, and Blood and Thunder: Musings on the Art of Medicine. I am also a contributing writer to Impact Times and am cofounder of The Smoking Poet. My sports writing can be found at Bleacher Report.

Unlike many writers, I can't honestly say that I've had a lifelong love for literature and writing. Encouraged throughout most of my schooling to study math and science, I was introduced to literature as a discipline late in my undergraduate career. It was really only during my graduate studies that I began to fully appreciate the act of writing as a form of inquiry and expression. This appreciation notwithstanding, it was still only after a breakdown that I myself turned to writing in a desperate attempt to understand myself. Because my writing is so personally motivated, I choose to keep much of it private. The text I offer here, however, is a notable exception. Although it too began as a highly personal and private work, whatever.odt ultimately -- and to my pleasant surprise -- blossomed into precisely the sort of text that I wish I had read when I was younger. I've chosen for this reason to share whatever.odt with anyone whom it might interest, in the hope that the individuals who need it most will find and be empowered by it.

Author bio:
For such an ordinary person I have - so far - led an extraordinary life. Very happy childhood in Norwich with a loving family, great teenage memories of Norfolk, a fabulous husband and home in the small village of Morton-on-the-Hill, just a few miles north-west of Norwich. I studied my favourite subjects at the University of East Anglia, graduating in 1992 with an honours degree in English History and Landscape Archaeology. Then I found a great job with an international firm of lawyers as a legal secretary in the senior partner’s department in Norwich. Had more fun than you can shake a stick at working in the planning and environment department. Then just when things couldn’t get any better, they did. The Lone Star State beckoned so Mike and I packed up the furniture and the dogs, learnt the local Texan patois in U-stun, bought a big ol’ pickup truck, built a bar-be-sqew bar in the yard, and began a whole ‘nuther life. Emotional and economic reasons drew us back to Europe in 2007 - England and later Moscow, but then recession started to turn global, and eighteenth months later we were back in Texas. One of my Dad’s favourite sayings was, “It’s all part of life’s rich pageant” or it might have been “pattern” but whatever the correct term, it perfectly describes my philosophy. So there we are then. With my employment resume shot to smithereens - who would want to take on an English ex-legal secretary, ex-corporate administrative assistant, constantly on the move - I thought the next best option was to start writing about my extraordinary life. I hope you enjoy reading Finding Jingo. Susy Scott Dallas, November, 2011

Lonna Cunningham lives on a very small farm in rural Alberta where she and her family raise sheep, chickens and veggies, accompanied by a Dexter cow, several dogs and a fluctuating number of cats. You can read Lonna’s musings about life on the farm, knitting, gardening and a variety of other somewhat random subjects on her website at blog.applejackcreek.com. Lonna rarely goes anywhere without a knitting project in hand and once sat at the side of the road after a car accident working on a sock while waiting for the police to arrive. She is engaged in an ongoing effort to balance the size of the fibre stash in such a way as to ensure that there is always enough on hand to allow for the immediate implementation of suddenly-inspired projects while at the same time attempting to stay within the available storage space. In addition to knitting, Lonna also enjoys spinning, particularly on her beloved century-old Canadian Production Wheel, and she can often be found online in the Ravelry or Homesteading Today forums, where she is known as Frazzlehead. The onset of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder brought Lonna’s twenty-year career in Information Technology to a rather unexpected end, and she is now exploring other ways in which she can contribute to the family’s financial stability (and pay for yarn).

Apart from "The Forgotten Heroes", which was a special project for a late friend, my e-publications' main theme to November 2011 is the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This powerful mental illness wreaks havoc on our society, a society that rarely understands the impact of this condition. PTSD Sadly, the overuse of PTSD diagnosis has increased confusion and cynicism. I only address PTSD where SEVERE TRAUMA was experienced (battle weary soldiers or brutally abused children). Let's stop euphemisms re most returned soldiers - THEY SUFFERED SHELL SHOCK OR BATTLE FATIGUE. My PTSD was not caused by the "Puppy Love" experience, but from a brutal terror suffered by most children of returned soldiers who experienced the horror of combat (but were never treated for its effects). Thus, the baby boomer generation families still harbour many forbidden secrets. However, considered a failure by society in general, I am now living proof that there is hope for PTSD sufferers. I must emphasize that a top mental health professional must treat this crippling condition. When the truth is revealed (the buried emotions rise to the surface), you will lose more "friends" than rats deserting a sinking ship. Many arrogant people have laughed at my financial and social demise. For many of us, the cure is worse than the ailment (reliving the trauma)- but if you persist, you'll be granted a second chance. A successful man goes from failure to failure but never gives up (Winston Churchill). Self compassion, now THAT's a project PTSD sufferers can tackle. Until we forgive ourselves, we're just actors. Once we learn to truly respect and properly care for ourselves, then, and only then, can mature love for others develop. Loneliness is an ever present challenge for PTSD sufferers. Loneliness is Western Society's biggest problem, Mother Teresa once said, responding to an arrogant reporter (who expected abortion to be Mother Teresa's response). Accept it, embrace it - it'll end in greater character within. Other I enjoy drumming as a hobby, specializing in Big Band Jazz, Heavy Metal and Parade Drumming (Bagpipe Bands). I am a Management Accountant, having graduated from Simon Fraser University Burnaby BC Canada. I am over the hill but it's better than being under it. My motto: THINGS ARE NEVER AS BAD AS THEY SEEM.

I write serious comedy about things that aren't normally considered to be funny. Before I started writing short stories and novels, I worked in the film industry as a writer/director. My very first feature film, a dark comedy called LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, was Dan Aykroyd's first film. It was invited to FILMEX in Los Angeles in 1977 by The American Film Institute and released in the U.S. by Atlantic Releasing and Paramount Home Video. I directed some other movies, too, including MELANIE starring Glynnis O'Connor, Don Johnson and Paul Sorvino, and CAFE ROMEO starring Jonathan Crombie and Catherine Mary Stewart. I also wrote and directed a black comedy called HOME IS WHERE THE HART IS starring Leslie Nielsen, Martin Mull and Valri Bromfield (sister). In the 90s I ran a software company. We won the Newmedia Invision Award, Newsweek’s Editor’s Choice Award and Parenting Magazine’s Magic Software Award for our musical painting app for preschoolers called "Paint ‘N’ Play". I directed many episodes of television for children. Now I tell seriously strange and funny stories for adults because I think we need them. During my years in the movie business I learned that you cannot put out good ideas, using millions of dollars of someone else's money without protracted, and largely absurd, struggles. I think it was Stanley Kubrick who once said "Making movies is like trying to produce fine music in a furniture factory." I finally walked away from that life of glitter and glamour: getting up at 3:00 AM to shoot my own screenplay in some filthy freezing warehouse under the absentee supervision of a self-medicating executive producer. I elected, instead, to lock myself up to rearrange electrons in such a way that my ideas could go out into the universe where they may be of some more immediate use to real people. Here's my official quote: "I don't think we're going to solve some of the problems of society until we can laugh and are no longer frightened by them." Here's another one: "Hate is fear. Fear is ignorance. Stupidity is insisting on one's own ignorance."
