Where Are The Bright Sparks? | by Marcus Foot April 24, 2012 | 799 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I'm male, in my mid-to-late forties, married, no kids, semi-retired .... oh & I live in the Caribbean. Throughout most of my working life, after completing an Engineering Degree at University, I've been self-employed, primarily in sales-related occupations. I've been called a nerd, a geek, a charmer, an intellectual, a cunning linguist (I speak two languages fairly fluently and a third badly), a nice guy, a bastard, empathic, self-centred, generous, naive, cynical ... and honeybunch. Like many people I have harboured a desire to write my “one great novel†before I die. Recently I have had some success blogging on the internet, and this has encouraged me to push my writing further, step by step. I am starting with a very short “flash fiction†story which is a re-write of some earlier musings, followed by a short story which will introduce the main protagonists in a series of novels I hope to complete. I sincerely hope you enjoy my writing and will follow me on my journey. |

Ask Your Librarian: Letters to Youth | by Kafi Kumasi April 23, 2012 | 12170 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: At Indiana University, Kafi Kumasi was a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Fellow through a partnership between the School of Education and the School of Library and Information Science. Her dissertation research, “Seeing White in Black: Examining Racial Identity Among African American Adolescents Through a Culturally Centered Book Club,†was a sociolinguistic ethnographic study that examined racial identity among thirteen African American middle and high school students inside a book club that centered on exploring Black culture and experiences through young adult novels. She was also the principal investigator on a research project within the Indiana School of Library and Information Science. "Stories We Tell: Culture, Race, and Youth Services in the LIS Curriculum," details her qualitative pilot study exploring how a group of pre-service librarians think about multicultural education as it relates to their role serving ethnically diverse youth in library settings. Kumasi also received an IMLS-funded scholarship to obtain her MLIS at Wayne State, while working as a school media specialist, through a partnership between the former Library and Information Science Program and the Detroit Public Schools. Prior to entering graduate school, she was a high school English teacher at Southeastern High School of Technology in Detroit. |

SSG Fries' Guide to the Army Physical Fitness Test | by Galen Fries April 20, 2012 | 6443 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I live in the Northwest but am originally from Upstate NY. I'm married, have three kids, a cat, and a couple of plants. I've spent 25+ years in either the active Army or the Army National Guard and been deployed to Iraq twice. My love for motorcycles has been a lifelong obsession and I've been riding since I was 9. Also, as a kid, my summers were spent with my father on the islands north of Toronto in Georgian Bay. I am an avid swimmer, power boater, and sailor. Writing, reading, and drawing have been a stress relief for me since before a time I can remember. I don't pretend to be a great writer but I hope you're at least entertained by what I've scribbled down. Please know that I very much appreciate you taking the time to read what I've written and truly welcome your feedback. |
