The First Battle | by Mac Logan Jan. 31, 2012 | 3971 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: WRITING Some first-hand experience of wasteful, inept and self-serving procurement practices in the public sector, with concerning press reports of uncontrolled costs and minimal accountability, provided inspiration for The Angels’ Share. I have witnessed opportunistic exploitation and stunning incompetence, by both public and private sector people and organisations in both national and local government. This begs a question, why is incompetence and self-serving abuse being allowed to continue? In addition to the Angels' Share series, I have two other writing projects in-hand. One is a Celtic spiritual warrior adventure story, set in Roman times, with preliminary research and writing begun. The other, having written over twenty published articles, involves the practicalities of the human side of work. ME A ‘son of the manse’ I lived in North America as a child; in Canada, the Mid-west and ultimately Washington DC before returning to the UK. I am British and Scottish and have a strong affinity for Americans. After a somewhat spotty school career, I did various jobs including time as a shepherd on the island of Mull. I became a middle manager in an engineering company at the age of twenty three. By twenty six I was running a training group of 20 SME manufacturing companies with over 30 locations. When I was thirty I joined a UK national multiple retailer and manufacturer as Head of HR. Next I started my own company as a business advisor, organisation/team development and change specialist. I worked extensively in the public and private sectors, blue chip to small enterprise. I was frequently hired by organisations to troubleshoot people and team problems. Finally I founded and became CEO of an IT firm. I left after eight years and became a writer, business advisor, non-executive director and member of a charity that provides advocacy support for people with learning difficulties. I've known good times, hard times and have travelled a bit. The next book in the Sam Duncan series, DarkArt, will be published in summer 2012. |

Island of the Hunted - The Beginning | by P B Thompson Jan. 29, 2012 | 15395 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Born in London, England, I started my working career as a mechanic until I was made redundant. I then trained to work in IT where I have been since 1995. I started writing as a way to make extra money, not knowing how difficult it was. In that time I found I really loved writing. After many, many submissions to agents I found no success. Self publishing has opened up a whole new world for me. I have started a business and have a 10 year plan. I will write at least 3 books per year and revise my situation in 5 years. I hope to be able to write full time within my 10 year plan. |

A Suicidal Man | by Antoinette Pippens Jan. 18, 2012 | 1315 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: What do you expect when you pick up a fictional novel? Should expect to be captivated, dazzled, and entertained? If so, then why is it that so many times, after just having read a book, do people feel insecure about life in general? If after reading a book, you are left with a brand new distrust for people who are otherwise close to you, then the author of the book has rendered you an unforgivable disservice. Books are not supposed to leave you feeling less good about yourself as a human being, or about your life, your race or culture, your financial status, your sexuality, or any of your personal life choices. It seems as though it has become next to impossible to find a modern book that doesn’t depict a woman whose man is sleeping with her sister or life-long friend – and in some cases, her teenage daughter. Would you go to see a movie if you thought that you’d return home feeling edgy – snapping at your family, or going to work the following morning and making unnecessary enemies? Well then why would you read a book that could ensue in the same outcome? I realize that not all books should unfold like fairy tales, and you can best believe that my stories and books are no exception. My stories and books do not all have a happy ending – or even a sad ending, but you can certainly count on a realistic ending. My stories do not feature characters with names like ‘Aiden’ or ‘Shannesy,’ one brain surgeon and the other a world renowned artist living in a five million dollar mansion overlooking the ocean. My characters resembles people you see every day, and my stories tell the tales of the persoanal lives of these people that you do not see and could never imagine. My books have some hate, jealousy, deception, immorality, and a few tear-jerking moments, but the story will not be centered on negativity, and it will also reiterate love, trust, integrity, and righteousness, and morality. It is my goal to captivate, dazzle, and entertain my readers and leave them feeling uplifted, not deflated and distrusting. |

Amanda Ackers and The Deep Forest Elves | by GlennAndSasha Gabriel Jan. 03, 2012 | 244305 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Special Note: Hello everyone, and thank you for visiting our Authors Page. We are delighted to announce that we have just published our first novel, Amanda Ackers and The Deep Forest Elves. We are still in shock that so many people had liked our short stories. From November 14th of 2011, to February 7th of 2012, our little short stories and new novel have been downloaded over 3,469 times, with the novel being downloaded 723 times in one month! We are very thankful to you all, for supporting our work, which we do for the enjoyment of it. Our thanks also, to the many of you who have emailed us, with kind comments on our stories, and those who had requested receiving a prerelease version of our novel. We had never thought of doing that, but what a great idea. It gave many a chance to read the novel before we actually published it. Thanks to all of you! We are most humbled by the response we have received, and thank you from the top, middle and bottom of our hearts! Book Two of the Amanda Ackers series, Amanda Ackers and The Realm Of The Witches, will be out near the end of the year. Should any of you like a prerelease version, please let us know. As you know, we do require you to sign a non-disclosure agreement and fax it back to us… it’s just good business practice. Please let us hear from you when you get the chance. Email us at: GlennAndSasha@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- Hello and thank you for visiting our Smashwords.com page. My name is Sasha Gabriel, and I would like to take a few moments to say a little about Glenn and myself. They say that creativity belongs to the young. Well, not always. Young at heart, I’ll buy, but nothing else. Writing is relatively new for me. I’ve been an avid reader for most of my 60+ years. But writing seemed daunting. How do you write an idea to get over to other people without boring them to death? How do you write conversations that sound like the people who are speaking them? Once I studied the “how to’s†a bit, and with the encouragement from Glenn, my wonderful husband and best friend, I started writing. And I love it. So does Glenn. Writing has opened a door for me that nothing else has – my imagination has soared and I’m absolutely thrilled and thankful, from the bottom of my heart, that others like my writing, as well. Both Glenn and I have been submitting very, very short stories (no more than 600 word stories) because these are also being entered into a writing contest with that directive. At the same time, both Glenn and I are writing novels (Glenn’s is awesome!!!! Think the depth of Lord of the Rings with the immediacy of Harry Potter and you’ve got it!). But I want to share something with you all… Glenn has battled Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia almost his entire life. That’s a mouthful, for sure, but try living with them on a daily basis! Even so, Glenn has worked to overcome the more serious side effects and his talent in writing, painting, and all over creativity is nothing short of staggering. Honestly… I’m running to keep up with him but I’m mostly just out of breath! So… the bottom line is… we’re all just human with all our challenges and it’s those challenges that make what we create that much better. Please… If you like to read… then write. If you like to paint… then paint. Pick up that paintbrush and start. For writing, get to your keyboard and begin. We think you’ll surprise yourself at your talents. And, again… Thank You all for your kind and generous words of appreciation for our stories! It means the world to us! ----------------------------- Glenn here. Just wanted to add that we never thought anyone would even read our work, let alone have downloaded our little stories hundreds of times in less than a month. Because of the kind words from you all, I will continue to write. I have, as Sasha had mentioned, been writing a novel which I was writing for fun, for our grandson Logan. I was not going to publish it, just print it out to give to him. Now… once the first book of that series is finished, I’ll publish it here for FREE. My thanks to all of you. Feel free to contact Sasha and I at the following email address. We would love to hear from you: GlennAndSasha@gmail.com |
