Fergyville Episode 1: The New Plan (Novella) | by Katina Ferguson May 03, 2011 | 8463 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I love to write! Writing is an important part of my life. Long before I considered writing for the masses, I wrote for personal enjoyment, and filled journal after journal with my thoughts and observations. At 13 years old, I tried my hand at writing a novel. There was no outline and no clear direction ─ just a set of characters I would throw into random, action-packed, and suspenseful scenarios. It was fun until I ran into plot holes. Over the years I found that poetry was my medium of choice for venting, blogging was an excellent platform for sharing great ideas, and storytelling was both a way to entertain and teach. My journey on the writer’s path vacillated between writing as a hobby and writing with intent to publish. Finally, in 2010, when I was looking for work, my husband sat me down and asked me to stop. He wanted me to commit 100% of my time to writing because he had seen my work, and felt I could earn a living from it. In January, 2011, I started a blog that I’ve now migrated over to HubPages.com, and in May, 2011, I launched a contemporary fiction e-book series called Fergyville. Other works in progress include a young adult science fiction novel, and a few children’s books ─ all to be released in due time. |

Once in a Blue Moon | by John Krissilas April 25, 2011 | 13250 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Hi! I'm John, an Advertising Account Planner in Toronto. By day, I spend my time looking for the “big idea†to use in my next great advertising campaign. By night, however, you'll find me in a coffee shop or at the running track, brainstorming the “big idea†to use in my next great story. My favourite aspect about writing isn't the writing itself, but the storytelling. I believe that the key to a great story is an over-arching concept - a theme - that drives the flow of the narrative and the conflict of its characters. I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of using archetypes (universal ideas, characters, and story arcs) to make my stories more impactful. I'm a huge fan of dystopian science-fiction, and I'm currently working on my own contribution to the genre: a short story collection called "In-Futura" ( In the future... ). Each tale features a strange vision of the future: a world in which fashion and technology have merged into one, a world in which hunting and gathering en masse is all the rage, a world in which corporations control the weather... you get the picture. After completing a futuristic piece, Chaotic Theory, a novella that explores the conjecture of how the flap of a butterfly’s wings in South America might result in a tornado in Texas, I commenced my next major project, a murder mystery that spans two centuries written around baseball legend, Ty Cobb. Vengeance | by J.E. Taylor April 14, 2011 | 99374 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: J.E. Taylor is a writer, a publisher, an editor, a manuscript formatter, a mother, a wife and a business analyst, not necessarily in that order. She first sat down to seriously write in February of 2007 after her daughter asked: “Mom, if you could do anything, what would you do?†From that moment on, she hasn’t looked back and now her writing resume includes six+ published novels along with several short stories on the virtual shelves including a few within eXcessica anthologies. Her first book, DARK RECKONING - released on July 5, 2010 - introduced Special Agent Steve Williams to the masses. Pamela Jenewein – Romance At Heart Review: “J E Taylor writes a thrilling and engaging paranormal horror, “Dark Reckoningâ€. The absorbing, fluid plot builds slowly towards its divergent terror-driven climax. As sturdy, forthright characters convey the story’s age-old message; stay out of the woods…and while you’re at it, the water too.†Ty Drago, Editor of Allegory and author of PHOBOS: “J.E. Taylor has penned a tale of terror worthy of Lovecraft. The strong characters, edgy atmosphere and unflinching narrative hooked me from the first word and kept me riveted all the way through to DARK RECKONING's horrifying conclusion - a solid piece of storytelling!" VENGEANCE – released on November 1, 2010 is the second in the Agent Williams series. Author Poppet says of Vengeance: “VENGEANCE is a great crime thriller – it was an excellent read, it moves at a frenetic pace with multiple character threads being woven through it to culminate in an explosive ending. I recommend it as a gripping read you won’t be able to put down.†And Hunting Season is the latest Steve Williams Novel. "Unstoppable, breath stealing, and terrifying all at once." - Cat Connor, author of killerbyte, terrorbyte, and exacerbyte. "Hunting Season goes where few venture, mixing a compelling crime thriller with supernatural forces. The action and drama is thick and fast and I guarantee you will not be able to put this book down." - Poppet, author of Seithe and Darkroom. She also released her first erotic thriller in July 2010 - SURVIVAL GAMES. Pamela Jenewein, Romance At Heart, Rated Grade-A Select Recommended Read: “Ms.Taylor creates an overwhelming thrilling reading experience. Although ruthlessly dark and sinister, Survival Games is an impacting, powerful read, lingering long after it’s finished. There is no forgetting this author, or this work of fiction.†John Everson, Bram Stoker Award Winning Author: "Sexy dark and intense, Survival Games will bind you to the page, kiss you slowly and then kick you where it hurts the most; I couldn't stop reading until I knew who won the game... Jessica Connor is one amazing character, and Survival Games is one hot read!" MIND GAMES – the second book in the Games Trilogy was released on November 29, 2010. The last book, END GAME was released on February 14, 2011 In addition to being co-owner of Novel Concept Publishing, Ms. Taylor also moonlights as an Assistant Editor of Allegory, an online venue for Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. She has been known to edit a book or two and also offers her services judging writing contests for various RWA chapters. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and two children and during the summer months enjoys her weekends on the shore in southern Maine. |

Flood of 1965 | by Nancy Reil Riojas April 04, 2011 | 2948 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Thank you for visiting my profile. Throughout each of our lives, stories continuously happen all around us. What's thrilling is expressing them on paper, yet presenting the story to you with grace and clarity is in itself another story. In addition, we writers share a great challenge of maintaining your attention, never an easy task. Hence, my goal is to present stories that move your heart. I am from San Antonio, Texas, and after decades of a successful career in real estate, I still live in this great state. Most of my novelettes, novellas, and short stories are inspired by true events and take place only in Texas settings. I attempt to keep my writing style clear and direct, which can be enjoyed from the young to the old. In several of the stories, I provide Texas facts with the violence of self defense battles and natural disasters as well as moving, emotional struggles then combine them with moral fortitude. By keeping the reading time of some of the stories no longer than the length of a movie, the intent is to spark interest in those who dislike reading. "Writing opens the window to our souls, yet reading opens the door. If I can inspire anyone to read, then I feel successful in my endeavor." My stories: "Monster At My Window" (Novella) "Moonshiner, The Wolf" (Short Novel) "Hannibal~A True Story" (Short Story) "Rabbi's Books" (Short Story) "Visiting Mary" (Short Story) "Flood of 1965" (Short Story) "Veil of Doom" (Short Story) "Lucky" (Children's Short Story) ~~~~ REVIEWS ~~~~ "Moonshiner, The Wolf" 1. This book helps us to understand two things: One, life is about the realization that if you know something has to be done, be self-reliant and do it, which in turn creates a strong sense of worth. And two, for some of us it can be difficult to know others as deeply as we might like to, especially those we love the most. Be good to those you love so you can live with them after this life, forever and ever." Andrew Campbell 2. "Kudos! A heart-wrenching story that entices you to keep reading. It's well written and certainly appropriate for all ages. Loved reading it." Thomas Holden 3. "A moving story from beginning to end, but one scene is a real tear-jerker." - Alpine Avalance, Alpine, Tx. Valerie P. 4. " 'Moonshiner, The Wolf' tells the tale of a courageous West Texas ranch woman. She befriends a wolf who becomes her lifetime guardian. Don't miss out, read it!"-- Bandera County Courier Editor, Bandera, Tx. Carolyn Edwards. "MONSTER AT MY WINDOW" 1. "A highly recommended thriller! Good battle scenes and good plot will hold your interest all the way through. Not one unneccesary or boring word in the entire story as the author does not force elements that disrupt the flow. The characters come to life and the setting fits like a glove. It begins with an up close casting of a young daughter who tells the truth and from there it unfolds into a unique storyline when friends face up to creatures that infiltrate a south Texas town. The end will leave you wanting more thrills, I guarantee it." David Martinelli 2. "Great Read! I thought this book would be all about monsters, but I got more out of it than just a monster story. This book reminds people that no matter how a child describes something, you should always listen and hear them! The way a child views something is not always the way we adults view them. Great book! To me, much more than a monster story." Wanda S. 3. "Different, but interesting." R.em "Hannibal~A True Story" 1. The storyline in this short story produces no punches as the author describes her survival against an animal that was never taught love." Kristina Howells, France author "VISTING MARY" 1. "This short story is charged with emotion and the imagery is fantastic as well --- keep writing." Heather Kitt "THE RABBI'S BOOKS" 1. "Excellent point of view. From the atrocities depicted in Elie Wiesel's "Night" to the haunting scene of Schindler's List, these events truly are worth teaching. To think that certain schools would have the nerve to excuse the matter is absolutely disappointing. Bravo to you, Nancy, for portraying that point of view and doing it so well!" Shane Ryan, writer "Flood of 1965" 1. "I felt like I was a part of the story, good description." Laura Everly Note from author: "In December the Christmas short story "Visiting Mary" was chosen for publication by the editors of four newspapers throughout Texas, "The Bandera County Courier" in Bandera County, "The Leader" in Dallas, Texas," La Prensa San Antonio", and "El Hispano News," Dallas, Texas." I am sole owner of these published stories and they are copyrighted at the U. S. Copyright Office, Washington, D.C. White Night | by Ryan S. Fortney March 15, 2011 | 1768 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Thinking, always thinking. Every time his fingers hit the keyboard or pen hits paper, something new bleeds out. There’s no stopping the monster machine that is Ryan S. Fortney, author of books like Paxcorpus and hilariously short stories such as White Night. But the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania born author wasn’t always this way. For a long time there was a power struggle between his mind, his creativity and the outlet through which it would seethe. Growing up, he had been extremely fond of illustration and cartoons. He’d sit around watching his favorite shows and with a pencil and a little tablet, he’d mimic that particular artist’s style. In his teenage years, his sketching continued, yet he could never reach the greatness that he believed to be all around him. It just never felt right. The very last thing he drew was a strange work of sorts – The face of a woman and two characters that he thought might star in a comic book series. These very characters ended up being the start of something bigger and greater, when he turned 23 and finally discovered what outlet he would settle into, after many grueling, painstaking years. Ryan S. Fortney graduated High School with a diploma and exceptionally high grades in English and literature. Later, he would attend a few college level creative writing courses and begin his descent into writer madness. |

Dont Ever Change | by John H. Carroll Feb. 24, 2011 | 7624 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: John H. Carroll was the youngest of seven children and was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970 where he was kept in a dresser drawer with the clean socks. Luckily, he wasn’t kept with the dirty socks or else he might have grown up to become slightly warped. As a child, John spent most of his time wandering through the Mojave Desert in an attempt to avoid people. He would stare at the sky, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. One of his favorite memories is watching his dad build the fuselage of Evel Kneivel’s skycycle in their garage. One of his least favorite moments was watching that skycycle fall into the Snake River. (Not his dad’s fault and he has documentation to prove it, so nyah) As a teenager, John spent most of his time driving wherever he could in an attempt to avoid people. He would stare at the road, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. He was the captain of the chess team, lettered in golf and band while in high school, and wasn’t beaten up anywhere near as much as one might imagine. As an adult, John spends most of his time staring at a computer screen in an attempt to avoid people. He stares at the monitor for hours, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. He has been married to his wonderful wife for 14 years and they have three obnoxio . . . wonderful children who always behave . . . when they’re asleep. Emo bunny minions surround John at most times. He is their imaginary friend and they look to him for guidance. At one point, they took over the world. No one noticed because they left everything exactly as it was. They gave the world back after a week because it was depressing. The Willden Trilogy is his first endeavor into the field of writing. Other series and standalone works will be forthcoming. In addition, John has written a number of short stories he publishes for free because he likes you so much. (And it’s good marketing. Shh) He writes in the evenings and weekends whenever possible. Regrettably, the family mentioned in the previous paragraph desires food and shelter, requiring the author to possess a full time job until his writing makes him rich. |
